Question:
I've just watched the Rurouni Kenshin OVA and absolutely loved it. I understand that there is a series with 96 episodes for this anime and wondered if they are all released in order on DVD?
Also, is there any good reference sites for this anime?

www.animeondvd.com is an excellent site and some great people are on the forums if you have any queries. I know that the series was being released on dvd (in R1 and R4) but I have no idea how far they are through the series etc
Thanks
I think what I've seen so far is the prequel to the series
Hiya
they started to release the Rurouni Kenshin dvds in the US 2 or 3 years ago and have released all episodes of the tv series now.
I would have to count them but i'm not at home at the moment, i think they are more than 20.
I got a subscribtion when they started to come out, £20 a month is not as bad as buying them all now :norty:
Don't know about the R4 releases but i think they are at dvd 7 or 8, not sure.
The whole lots been released R1 (with the exception of the recent second OAV series. which is due soon). Its spread across something ludirous like 22 volumes though (I'm still missing one part way along, really must correct that ^_^;)
The TV version is fun stuff, but you should note that it is very different to the OAVs. There is a lot of humour, and its set after the OAVs when Kenshin has pretty much sworn off violence. Also note that it doesn't really get going full whack until you get to around episode 27, when it suddenly delivers thirty or so wonderful episodes before going crap right after it winds up the storyline.
Still, if you have a mind to (not to mention lots of cash) its well worth the investiment as its a fantastic show overall.
22 volumes
You have a lot of anime DiGiKerot, mind I ask where you get them from? Any specific online retailer?

Far too many different places ^_^
I'm on the AnimeonDVD 'share the love' list for Amazon, so for pre-orders I tend to go there and do big orders as I get enough of a discount for the occasional customs charge not to bother me.
For stuff whats already out I tend to use either United Publications ( www.up1.co.uk ) because they are quick (though not esp. cheap) or DVDBoxoffice.
I tend to get the occasional raw Japanese, R2 release for which I'll use Amotokyo, Amazon.jp or CDJapan depending on my mood ^_^
I have a few of the Odex releases from Singapore as well, bought from Popular ( http://store.yahoo.com/popular-sg/movie-dvd-japanese-animation.html )
I think that about covers it ^_^;
I was very happy with www.up1.co.uk, i just asked them to send me the new Kenshins automatically :)
The Rurouni Kenshin series is currently being released in R4 by Madman (up to volume 10 so far) with new ones being released monthly.
There's a bunch of different R4 online stores you could order from if you're interested (a good starting point is DVD Plaza (http://www.dvdplaza.com.au))
I consider the TV series to be better than the OVAs - the TV series has much more comedy and is lighter in tone, plus there are quite a lot of SD scenes (if you like that kind of thing - I do).
Another thing that you're probably already aware of: Region 4's are a lot cheaper than R1s plus they're in PAL.
See this page for details of Madman R4 Anime DVDs: Madman's Catalog (http://www.madman.com.au/catalogue.php) (use the Formats and Categories drop-lists at the left to select DVD and Anime).
Cheers Adrian3
Before I read that page, are there any notable differences between the R1 and R4 discs?
Oh, and are DVDPlaza/Madman customs friendly?
Madman are the R4 producers of the actual disks - you can order from them but they charge full RRP.
DVD Plaza is a "Shopping Mall" it just links to a bunch of other R4 DVD store sites".
I tend to use http://www.devoted.com.au/ who are usually the cheapest but they can tend to be quite slow.
I have used http://www.ezydvd.com.au/ who are more expensive but are quick and reliable.
Check their sites for details on international ordering. I'm in Australia so I don't know about customs problems in the UK.
They work out at about £10 per disc, which is a good price

The whole Kenshin arc is a little muddled thanks to the fact that the TV series caught up with the Manga!
Basically Kenshin was a Manga series first, written by Nobuhiro Watsuki. It comprised of 3 story arcs: the Tokyo Arc the Kyoto Arc & the Jinchuu Arc.
Now the TV series adapts the Tokyo Arc very faithfully, but does throw in too many filler episodes that were not based on Nobihuro's Manga issues & therefore simply aren't up to the standard of the faithful episodes.
Luckily they decided to forget much about fillers for the 2nd arc & from about ep 26 onwards you get an extremely faithful adaptation of the Kyoto Arc, up until episode 76 IIRC. This is the peak of the TV show & IMO it's up to the quality of the Samurai X OVAs, it's sensational stuff.
Now they did 76eps & did a top job of adapting the Manga, but the problem started after the Kyoto Arc had finished :( You see, Nobihuro hadn't finished the Jinchuu Arc by this time & rather than doing the sensible thing & wait for him to finish they decided to just write the 3rd season themselves. The result is an extremely repetitive series where the same old storylines are regurgitated episode after episode. There's some good episodes tucked away in the final series, but ultimately it's a pale imitation of the stuff Nobihuro created.
Meanwhile the Jinchuu Arc was proving very popular with Manga fans & quickly became considered as the best Kenshin Arc yet as it deals with kenshin's past catching up on him & just everything that was great about the Kyoto Arc is amplified in this one. (Although i've yet to read all of both arcs yet meself :( )
So with the popularity of the TV show & the cries for an adaptation of the final arc of the Manga Sony decided to create some OVAs that were based around the Jinchuu Arc. These are the Samurai X ovas. Although they're not really much of an adaptation of the whole story arc as they only really deal with a few chapters that told the story of how Kenshin got the cross shaped scar on his face Also mainly dealing with the death of kenshin's wife Tomoe Yukishiro & why her brother Enishi Yukishiro seeks Jinchuu (Heaven's Wrath or something like that) against Kenshin. However because they only deal with a few issues of the Manga it did allow them to make an extremely faithful adaptation of the Manga (really they should give Nobihuro a co-directing & writing credit coz the Manga is basically the storyboards for the show, they just tweaked the look of the characters! :D)
Now fans still kept badgering Sony to finish off the Jinchuu Arc (even more so than ever seeing how excellent the OVAs were!) & so last year they released 2 new OVAs: In Memories & Sei Sou hen which they promised would deal with the Jinchuu arc & bring closure to all Kenshin anime.
Unfortunately they didn't deliver that :( Instead In memories ended up being a brief run through of the first 76eps of the TV show (as a result it's a bit of a mess & feels like an extended trailer) while Sei Sou Hen adapts a tiny part of the Jinchuu Arc in the first few mins, then carries on with a storyline that Nobihuro played no part in creating & hence doesn't feel like the Kenshin we all know & love imo. It's obvious that the writers do not fully understand the characters in the Manga.
I don't want to put anyone off getting these new OVAs when they hit R1 DVD early this year though, everything about the production values are first rate, they really do look gorgeous & SeiSouHen is a very good drama in it's own right. I just felt that it fell flat on it's face once placed in context with the original Kenshin story. As a reworking of an estabilished story (just like the Escaflowne Movie) then i felt it works much better.
So i guess fans of the Manga will always hope that maybe one day the Jinchuu Arc will get adapted properly & we'll get the true continuation of the story that started in the Samurai X OVAs, but i guess that'll never happen now :(
I'm pretty sure I read they're planning to release 3 Box Sets (one for each 'arc') on R1 this year, so its probably worth waiting if you haven't already started the collection as boxes nearly always work out cheaper for us importers.
Thanks for the info Shingster, interesting read
kanedaa, I'll wait a while then if this is true, I would prefer boxsets
Just done some quick checking and there will definitely be boxsets released. They were advertised in the final volume of the TV Series, though no release date has been announced, general opinion is that they will be released sometime this year.
The Samurai X film, I've seen the 4 parts.
I notice there are 3 dvd's out for that
Samurai X : The Motion Picture
Samurai X : Trust (Vol 1)
Samurai X : Betrayel (Vol 2)
Is the motion picture the complete lot of 4 , just put together (not various clips from all 4 parts) and are the other 2 dvd's basically volume 1 (the man with the slashing sword / the lost cat) and volume 2 (the previous night at the mountain home / the cross shaped wound)
I want the complete 4 parter on one dvd, is that the motion picture
Samurai X: The Motion picture is a seperate feature that's set a couple of years after the TV series ended. It has nowt to do with the 4 OVAs & is basically more like a 90min episode from the TV series in it's approach (basically much more humour than the OVAs).
It's a good enough film i guess, but it's not based on any of Nobihuro's manga volumes & so as such isn't up the excellent standards of the OVAs.
Luckily though I think what you're after is in the pipeline & i believe it's pencilled in for a US DVD release in the early half of this year. IIRC all 4 OVAs will be reframed to 1.85:1, then re-edited into one long motion picture. (I think some extra scenes may be added by the director as well.)
Wow, so the Motion Picture is set after the series? Excellent, will try and look for that once I've seen the series.
But the 2 volumes that are also on dvd, they are the OVA's split into 2 parts per volume?
Yeah each volume consist of 2 OVA episodes. I believe you can pick both volumes for £15 delivered on R4 DVD here (http://www.atlanticdvd.com.au/index_stuffer.cfm?speciallist.cfm?List=55~content)
Unfortunately international custmers have to jump through hoops to get their CC verified & accepted by Atlantic DVD, but once that's done they'll get the DVDs to you very quickly (i got my Kenshin OVAs & the Movie from them) & they are the cheapest e-tailer for these titles at the moment.
OK, is it a basic scan of the credit card to get it verified, or something else?

When you place your first order they debit your credit card with a small amount of money ( less than £1.00.) You need to contact your credit card company, establish the exact amount ( in Australian currency if possible ) and e-mail details back to Atlantic who will then dispatch the order to you. Details of the process are available on their site.
Yeah as hnimmo said it's basically identical to the Paypal CC verification process. Also international customers are only allowed to place one order per week! (maximum of 7 items per order allowed IIRC)
I've just seen up to episode 5, absolute quality so far, the humour makes me laugh aswell, and Zanza has just been introduced.
Can't wait for the boxsets if it stays at least as good as these opening episodes
Sagara Sanosuke is a great character. If you enjoyed the first 5eps so much then you're gonna love the series as a whole as really the early episodes just introduce all the characters. There are a few filler eps in the first season though, so the odd episode will fell a little repetitive, but still good because the characterisation of the show is just great.
Wait until Saitou Hajime makes his entrance though, that's around the end of the Tokyo Arc & the beginning of the Kyoto Arc, the series really goes into top gear then. :smokin: :notworthy
Oh yeah i forgot to mention before that ADV have pencilled in the next Kenshin OVAs for a 25th March release date on R1 DVD.
Called Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection i'm unsure whther it's just the Sei Sou Hen ova or both In memories & Sei Sou Hen together on one disc. ADV list the runtime of Reflection as 60mins, which is about 29mins too short to be both Seisouhen ( ~52mins) & in memories(~ 36mins) by my calculation, so i wouldn't be surprsed if that runtime is wrong or that In memories is available on the DVD as an extra.
One other possibility is that they've editted the final 10mins of In memories into Sei Sou Hen, as the first 25mins of in memories is basically a run down of the major events of the TV series.
When does the first season end? Just had a 4 parter where Kenshin battled with Aoshi for the first time. Superb
The final episode of the Tokyo Arc is episode 31. I won't tell you any more about it other than it's truly a wonderful epsiode.
I don't know if that is technically the last episode in the first season though as I do not know how it was broadcast in Japan, whether it was seasonal (with the Japanese standard of 26eps per season) or whether kenshin got longer seasons, or just ran weekly to the end, but certainly episode 31 is the dramatic apex of the first arc & the lead in to the start of the Kyoto Arc.
This won't be spoiling anything so i can tell you that you'll know when the first arc is drawing to a close as Saitoh Hajime makes his appearance & the general tone of the show shifts as we start to see storylines & themes that tie in with the OVAs.
I'm very tempted to start buying these and the two OVA dvd's from Atlantic DVD :D
Will the boxset just be like Evangelion, with the single dvd's slotting in the box, or have a total complete style to it do you think?

Your guess is as good as mine really, though Media Blasters (the company responsible for the R1 release) did produce this saucy little number :D - Berserk Boxset (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000065AYL.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg)
