Question:
I have a few questions about some miniseries i have been hearing good things about.
1. Is War & Remembrance composed of 1 six-disc box set or two?! Amazon have two six-disc sets but everywhere else only seem to have one, Some places say its 15 hrs long and others say its 31 hrs long:confused:
Second of all is it worth it, even if it is just the 15hrs that seems like a hell of a long series, is it good for the majority
2. Are the Horatio Hornblower movies any good, looks to get high votes on IMDB and is recommended for people who like Sharpe and altho i haven't seen it in ages i think i remember enjoying Sharpe
3. As said above Sharpe was one of the series i used to watch and i was wondering if it is worth getting on DVD
4. From the Earth to the Moon is meant to be another good miniseries but i have never actually seen it and was wondering if anyone had any opinions on it
5. the Winds of War is meant to be the prequel to War & Remembrance and i was wondering if it's any good and is there any chance of it coming out on DVD?
6. Is the 10th Kingdom worth getting?
Any other exciting miniseries anyone would like to recommend are welcome
thx
Check out the sales at HMV.co.uk for the first 6 Sharpe DVD's and MVC.co.uk for the 7th.
The 10th Kingdom is great fun, with some superb 'Takes' on the Fairy tales. Dont waste your time with the R2 as its cut and is well over priced - I got the 3 disc R1 for just £12.99 from Play.com But you can get it cheaper if you shop around.
As your a MOH addict i would recommend the Band of Brothers series - simply superb one of the best TV series ever made and a true story as well.
Also Gettysburg a great series on the massive battle at gettysburg in the us civil war.
If you like Stephen King then all the mini series are worth buying, my favs. are The Stand (crap ending apart), Storm of the century, Saloms lot. They can be picked up very cheap on R1.

Also Stephen Kings own mini of The Shining is out Jan 7th.
Nana - Is the Shining mini series any good ??? I know Stephen King prefers it - Anthony Michael Hall is in it isnt he?? Just wish they would release the Dead zone series on dvd and not just the Pilot - as that was an excellent series
I've got the 10th Kingdom on R1 and I highly recomend it
The aformentioned Band of Brothers: raw, honest and devastatingly powerful depiction of the travails of war that pulls no punches and leaves a lasting impression.
Roots: the original miniseries, and a shocking and brutal depiction of slavery in America.
The Tenth Kingdom: great fun from start to finish, wry and clever take on fairytale lore and also the single most hillarious "15" rating ever from the BBFC -- they classed fairy dust as drug taking! Such a shock the sets were originally printed with "PG" labels which were hastily covered with stickers! :D
Merlin: interesting take on the Arthur legend; hackneyed and risable in places, but overall great fun with some innovative design and clever twists.
Guliver's Travels: from Channel 4, and excellent, innovative take on the whole thing, returning it to the original satirical intent of the book with style.
Longitude: the story of the search for the Longitude clock (a stable clock at sea), told concurrently in an ingenious intertwining narrative set in two different centuries, and featuring a truly masterful set of performances from Michael Gambion and Jeremy Irons.
Shackleton: Kenneth Branagh stars as the Antartic explorer Ernst Shackleton, from the same people wo made Longitude, and this is equally good. Boys Own stuff perhaps, but done in the best possible way, with textured, mature performances, real heart and a truly epic feel. Also features perhaps the single most unexpected use of the f-word ever! :D

There were also rumours that some US network was planning an epic mini-series about the American Civil War, could be very interesting if they do it.

I agree with the verdicts on The 10th Kingdom, great fun and well worth rewatching. I've got the R2 version (I know, I know  ) I didn't realise it's been cut, any idea what was cut?

The R2 10th Kingdom had a second cut from the first Part
Taken from bbfc site
When submitted to the BBFC the work had a running time of 85m 39s.
To obtain this category cuts of 0m 1s were required. The cuts were Compulsory.
Cut required to double ear clap under the Board's policy on imitable techniques
already have Band of Brothers on DVD and totally agree with all comments on it.
Have Stephen King's Storm of the Century and love it, have seen Stephen King's Rose Red and love it so will probably get it.

Cheers for that  Annoying it is, though I never noticed it before and it's not severe enough for me to get the R1 version.
Another vote for The 10th Kingdom - class story:thumbs:
Also check out the other Hallmark miniseries like The Odyssey (tale of Odysseus journey back to Ithaca after the Trojan War, based on the poem by Homer), Jason and the Argonauts (closer to the originla tale than the 1963 film) and Jack and the Beanstalk The True Story.
Channel 4's Traffik was very good, much better than the film
