Question:
I bought this yesterday -- love the original, only seen the sequel in P&S VHS previously, etc. etc.
Does anyone know the origins of this release? It's anamorphic but to be honest it's not a terrific print they've used -- it looks like an NTSC conversion or something, i.e. from medium shot downwards everything looks a bit out-of-focus. There was a by-all-accounts decent R1 anamorphic release last year (screenshots I've seen certainly look better than this one), so I thought maybe they'd converted that. However, (a) I don't know what I'm talking about, and (b) this one has a DD 5.1 audio option that the US version doesn't.
I'm not complaining too much, it's not that bad, but it is pretty low quality compared to most DVDs.
Extras are some good production notes plus a fun commentary (from what I've listened to so far) by Kim Newman & Stephen Jones. A trailer would've been nice I feel, but never mind.
I thought I'd give the movie a chance since my previous experiences of it weren't ideal (maybe watch the original beforehand if I can be bothered). A nicer print would've been better though. I got it for £9.99 in HMV: they also have multiple copies of the 4:3 version at £4.99 but who'd buy that?!
The cover looks cool; however I remember the film being a bit poor. Then again it is a long time since I last saw it. Might give it another try (I liked the original and H20).
It's only £7.99 at Play.
Must sell my old R1 version.
FWIW
The R1 Universal anamorphic release is so far the best release of this film. Nice clean print (unlike the recent R2 reissue) and solid audio (even though there is no remix - just the original stereo).
The commentary is really the only thing in the R2's favour but the film's the thing...right?
