My Sassy Girl DC ?
Question:

i just watched the theatrical on VCD.
im thinking of getting the DVD.
but should i get the DC ?
i thought the TC had an alright pace and i was very satisfied by the end.
now how mucgh longer is the DC, 30 mins isnt it ?
im thinking that the DC is too long, cos at times during the TC i thought it dragged a bit.
is the DC worth the bother ?
if i get the HK, it comes with the extra scenes anyway, but are these better in the film or better as extras ?

Answers:

I also watched the theatrical cut first & felt that the odd moment dragged, but i still went with the DC & although it's 20mins longer i honestly don;t think it drags any more or less than the Theatrical version. Saying that I also do not feel there's much to seperate the 2 versions, with only a couple of standout scenes being in the longer DC that I felt should've been left in the theatrical version.
Basically I'd give the edge to the DC, but really there's pretty much as good as each other imo

Answers:

I've always said that I preferred the Theatrical Cut - but it's nice to have both versions.
EDIT: make that all 3 versions. I have the Korean Limited Edition on its way to me as we speak. :notworthy

I dont really like the theatrical cut much at all - I seen the Directors Cut first and it was perfect. Nothing needed removed and I feel too many nice little bits were edited out.
But the one thing that REALLY annoyed me was the removal of the song My Girl. It worked in the film perfectly and when it was removed from the theatrical cut I was not happy at all!
So I now have the nice LE on its way to me now :D

DC for me, watched the VCD TC first as well, then got the Korean R3, thought it was better. Got the R3 LE on its way as well :D

You have seen both the Theatrical Release (my DVD) and the Director's Cut (KC's VCD) - but this is the Director's Cut with DTS for the first time. This will be the best version available and is likely to be a collectors item.
Don't buy it if you are not a big fan of the film though Lee. I'm only buying it because I'm mad*.

The directors cut isnt actually the directors cut though is it ?.
Its just deleted and ng scenes put back into the film.

Not necessarily. How do you know that the Director didn't want those bits in in the first place? Lots of films are trimmed to make them more cinema friendly. :p

Yeah but when there trimmed by the director and re-edited back in by the distributor, that doesnt make a directors cut to me.
Im pretty sure that is what happened in the case of MSG.

I've only seen the longer cut and it seems GREAT to me ...........
Now i have seen it i don't think i would be happy watching the shorter version
Don't know why you would want less JJH in a movie :D :norty:

She also stars in Il Mare - which. IMHO, is just as good as Sassy Girl.
Her only other film is White Valentine which is ****.
Reviews on both films in the Korean Movies thread.

The VCD I sold wonderpants is the theatrical cut with none of the extra scenes.

you have to understand though Jimmy that films HAVE to be around 2 hours long (or less) in korea (i think this applies only to korean movies as you have movies like LOTR etc)
This is so as they make as much money as possible per day. A good example of this is Bichunmoo who's actual story is a bit muddled up and doesn't make sense at times because of some scenes being excised.
I am very sure this directors cut is what the director wanted. All of those deleted scenes from the theatrical cut of MSG as far as I'm concerned HAVE to be put in and a lot of them really add to the film. A good example of this is when Gyun Woo goes to talk JJH at the restaurant. This scene is a very touching scene clearly showing a girl in pain and I for one dont think it should ever have been removed.
Of course this is just my opinion but I am very sure this is the proper version the director wanted. Afterall the film was going to sell well in Korea either way due to its massive boxoffice success. Do you not think it's weird that they didn't milk it going for theatrical and then directors cut ?

Funnily enough, when we first watched Il Mare together she looked and me and said "That would be your perfect woman wouldn't it?" - she knows I've always liked pretty orientals with long straight hair. (also see Zhang Ziyi) :D

She's OK with it really. She knows I really only have eyes for her. ;)

Its OK for some, my missus is getting wet of richard gere and sean connery but if it was me and some tasty birds she's freak-out!! but anyway thanks for enlitening me on the DC version of My sassy girl ill be buying it soon. :)

So, is the version mentioned in this thread the version to get? I've not seen the film and know bugger all about it but I've bought lots of Asian cinema from recommendations from this forum and loved every one so far!
Whilst I'm at it, I see that free shipping from YesAsia requires me to buy 2 titles (well to spend $49+ anyway!). I want "Volcano High" - which version is the best for this film as again there seem to be loads! ('overseas' version or 'special edition'? etc)
cheers for your help
Richie

The Limited Edition mentioned here is indeed the best version out. It combines the DTS of the HK Edko release with the Directors Cut of the Korean release.
The only caveat to that (as Keyser touched upon) is the subtitles. The Korean DC had descriptive text subtitles which some people (including me) don't like. The HK release had normal subs. Not sure what type of subtitles this new version has yet.
I have the Korean Volcano High. Dunno if it's the best or not. You should also condider Il Mare. As mentioned - it's a fine fine film.

The korean volcano high is indeed the best version to get. The HK dvd of the film has 20mins edited out which is not good. Some people think the longer korean version drags a bit but I say BAH! HUMBUG! to that! I enjoyed the longer korean version very much :)
I would also recommend Il Mare but if you get that make sure to get the HK dvd which has slightly better picture and sound and better subtitles. The korean dvd of Il Mare is terrible subtitle wise - some sentences just dont make sense!

It was a while ago that I watched the HK DVD of Il Mare but I seem to remember that it suffered from the "oops forget to split over two lines" problem with the subtitles so the last few words would sometimes be chopped off leaving you to guess what was said

I doubt it will happen. As Cirrus mentioned before Il Mare was not a big movie in Korea and therefore no many peeps over there really give a **** about it. Shame. :(

I could be wrong - but you sure about just 2003 copies?
Possible mis-interpretation - 2003 copies
Could this not mean that its being released in 2003?
I cant see anyone going to the effort of making a DVD and then only producing 2003 copies of it - unless they were like £200 quid each or something...

Answers:

Grego - Yeah 2003 copies does seem like little but the Korean DVD market is tiny compared to that in the west. There was a limited Tin version of My Sassy Girl and that was very limited ... My sassy girl is actually the best selling Korean DVD ever and it only amounts to an odd 50,000 copies or so ... thats like just over US$1 million dollars ...
I think spiderman sold over US$100 million worth of DVDs?

I do believe though that the record holder in Korean Cinemas is Friends, which happends to be a great movie. Though I'm not sure what its DVD sales are like.

Friends was the highest grossing movie in Korea until marrying the mafia stomped all over it ...
However My sassy girl is the best selling korean DVD ...
... actually that isn't true Friends and marrying the mafia are about the same depending on where you get the figures ... :p

Already posted in the relevant thread here but can anyone here tell me if this (https://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx?pid=1001838908&did=0&code=k&section=videos&) version of "Vocano high" is the one to get? ie: is it the full 121 min version?
Wanna get my order for MSG in asap you see! ;)
EDIT! Nevermind I got my answer, it is!!!!! :D

Answers:

That's the korean DVD Richie, the longer version.
The best indicator as to whether you're looking at the Korean DVD or HK is to check the subtitles yesAsia list, the Korean releases rarely have chinese subs, so you know that the one with the chinese subs is the HK release.
Also you can check the writing on the cover picture if there is any. Korean writing is a lot different to Chinese, so if there's writing on the box that's very angular then it's usually korean as Chinese writing is almost an art-form in itself! :D

Received my copy of the My Sassy Girl LE today from Yesasia.
I can confirm that unforunately it does have descriptive subs. Also only Dolby Digital 2.0 sound for those of us without DTS on their amp :(
Also unsurprisingly all the extras on Disc 2 are in Korean with no English subs. Although strangely the menus are in English
Still looking forward to watching it after Ono's glowing tributes to this film ;) Lovely packaging too.

You'll enjoy the film Art mate.
I too found the disc a bit disappointing considering my high expectations.
The HK disc is still the best IMHO.
