Question:
I've noticed on Rewind that a lot of Paramount's R1 DVD titles are listed as 1.85:1 whilst their R2 counterparts are listed as 1.78:1.
I've also noticed that the R2 titles actually state on the back of the box that the aspect ratio is 1.78:1 whilst a lot of the R1 versions do not actually give the ratio (they simply say 'widescreen')
Thake a look at The Warriors for example. Rewind claims that the R1 version is the best because it has the correct aspect ratio.
Look (http://www.dvdcompare.org.uk/comparisons/film_results_page.php?fid=867)
But if you look here (http://www.dvdempire.com/Exec/v4_item.asp?userid=15910759258890&item_id=21646&tab=5&back=1) at the back of the R1 box, it doesn't actually say what the aspect ratio is. The R2 box does actually specify that the aspect ratio is 1.78:1.
Are the R2 versions actually losing any of the picture or are the aspect ratios just the same?
They are pretty much just the same - in some cases, where 1:85:1 is the listed ratio, it's probably nearer to 1:78:1.
I've noticed people are quite slack when it comes to the difference between 1:1.78 and 1:1.85.
For example, the mighty Akira had a ratio of 1:1.85, yet the ultimate R1 edition has 1:1.78 - no one seems to notice.
Is it cos they are pretty similar or just because, anamorphic 1:1.85 will stretch to fill a 16:9 (1:1.78) screen?
It depends on how you have set the overscan on your widescreen tv. You need a disk like AVIA to setup the overscan to get it within the margins where you would see difference between 1.78:1 and 1.85:1 on your tv. Even then the differences are small but they are there: you'll have a sliver of a black bar below and above your image with 1.85:1 but be aware that NTSC material shifts to the left and slightly to the top if you're using RGB output (I am ;) )
I'll have to check to see if there are indeed R1/R2 difference for the titles mentioned.
also is there anyone who can check "Rosemary's baby" from Paramount?
1.66:1 R1
1.85:1 R2
apparantly! both anamorphic - but why the difference?!
R1 Coming to America - 1.85:1 Non Anamorphic
R2 Coming to America - 1.78:1 anamorphic :smokin:
On most of the R2 Paramounts it does state correctly anamorphic 1.78:1:
Witness
Escape From Alcatraz
The Warriors
Harold And Maude
On these R1 Paramounts there's no indication but both are anamorphic 1.78:1:
The Conversation
Atlantic City
The only disc I have that states it wrong is Days Of Heaven which is 1.78:1 (but says on the back 1.85:1).
Rosemary's Baby is weird: my R2 looks even more cropped at the top than 1.85:1 if that's possible (is 1.90:1 a ratio?), some shots look great (The bouquet of red roses) but most of the heads in the movie are cut of rather often in the frame so for that 1.66:1 would seem more natural.
