Question:
Are the Japanese sub-titles burned into the picture.Ally McBeal comes out Sept.7 in Japan, will it or will it not have burned in sub-titles.
I don't know if this title will have burned in subtitles, but I have the Dark Angel Vol 1 (pilot TV movie by James Cameron starring Jessica Alba) from Japan, and the subtitles are selectable, meaning that you can watch it as it was originally broadcast in English and without any subtitles (looks great by the way). I got mine from cdjapan, but the info there is a little sparse as to whether subtitles are part of the image. My understanding is that -- at least on dvd's as opposed to ld's -- in most cases the subtitles are selectable due to the format.
More to the point, why are the Japanese getting the likes of ER, Dark Angel, and Ally McBeal on DVD before we are?
Cheers for the tip off on Dark Angel. It will probably be a long time before we see this in the UK or US.
The reason is something to do with who has the rights to release these in a particular territory. In the USA there seems to be an issue with who owns the rights due to syndication - which is why HBO are easier able to release their shows than other networks.
This also meant that we got Buffy in the UK before the US did.
I will placing an order for Dark Angel and if it looks good, then that Box Set has got my name on it!!!
WOO HOO - CDJapan have shipped my Dark Angel Box Set - I decided to wait and get the lot in one go!
Total Amount: 19927 yen (£112 by current exchange rates) - for 6 discs including shipping.
Will post impressions when I get it.
according to dvdtimes today, Dark Angel might be out in the UK june/july next year.
However, Jessica is such a Babe, I ordered from cdjapan, and like tbibic, mine shipped today too. £117 for me (going to South Africa so postage is more), that's the pilot and the boxset (6 discs).
Is Dark Angel any good? Jessica Alba’s box is really tempting but I’m unsure if I should dive into the whole thing or just get a taste first.

You could watch/tape a few episodes off Sky One, Saturday nights as they're being repeated at the moment.
I'll be buying them once a reasonably priced set becomes available.
