DVD visionary quits job
BURBANK, California (Reuters (http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsArticle.jhtml?type=internetNews&storyID=1946289)) - Warren Lieberfarb, the Hollywood executive who spearheaded the creation of the digital videodisc (DVD), has resigned suddenly as president of Warner Bros' home video arm, a post he had held for 20 years, the studio says.
Its statement did not give a reason for his departure, and a Warner Bros. spokeswoman on Friday declined to elaborate or speculate as to his next move. Warner Bros. is a unit of media giant AOL Time Warner.
Lieberfarb joined Warner Home Video as senior vice-president of sales and marketing in 1982, seven years after starting at Warner Bros. as a marketing vice-president.
He launched his DVD odyssey 10 years ago after realising that the video rental business faced extinction from video-on-demand: consumers would not bother renting bulky VHS tapes if they could order films from home. But they would buy videos if the quality and price were competitive.
He began investigating optical disc technology in 1992 and joined forces with Toshiba to develop what would become the DVD player. After launching commercially five years ago, players are now found in half of all American households; colour televisions took 20 years to reach the same penetration.
In 1999, Lieberfarb was presented with an Emmy Award, television's top honour, for his DVD work.
Lieberfarb also took on the home video rental industry by advocating that DVDs be priced cheaply to encourage sales rather than rentals.
Indeed, rental giant Blockbuster warned on Wednesday its fourth-quarter revenues and earnings would miss their targets because consumers were rushing to buy DVDs at supermarkets and electronics stores.
Lieberfarb will be replaced internally, with an announcement expected shortly, the statement said. The three executive vice-presidents below him are Ed Burns, Marcia King and Jim Cardwell.

Perhaps the success of the Digital Versatile Disk format forced him into retirement!

I wonder if this has anything to do with Blockbuster's refusing to stock Warners Titles due to Warners charging Blockbusters and other rental outlets high prices for rental disks.
With Blockbusters being the biggest rental chain Warners rental profits must be fairly non existant at the moment
