Question:
Has anyone got this title? I believe it to be 4:3 fullscreen, DD5.1 full 226 mins. version. I'm wondering wether it's worth getting until WB's finally get round to releasing a 'pucker' version.

Don't it is a rehash of the Brazilian version but now single sided dual layer. Reviews say picture is dire and its p/s
The good news is WB have this listed for a UK R2 release around June 2003. It is definitely coming as they got the film recertified at the BBFC a few months back for its DVD release.
I brought the one CD WOW was selling and it is the way malcy described it. It was the worst transfer I had seen and it was p&s but I was still able to sell it on eBay for £20. Wait for the R2 because all the other versions are not worth buying.
Thanks guys, your feedback was much appreciated.
June 30, 2003 is the 2 disc release date with a commentary as well.

While I would not dispute the picture quality I would like to point out that OUATIA was shot open matte 4:3 so I doubt very much this is a p&s version of the film.

I have seen other discussions on this and owners of the w/s LD have compared to the 4.3 ratio DVD and there is info missing at the sides on the current DVD. Therefore although you may get more at the top & bottom there is definitely info missing to the left & right.

I've compared parts of the Brazillian DVD with a widescreen recording from Channel 4 and it looked to a pan and scan of the widescreen print to me. I didn't see any evidence of open matte shots anyway. Avoid.
Out of interest, How can you tell if its open matte?

If it was from an open matte print, you would see more at the top and the bottom of the screen - filling a 4:3 aspect ratio, and sometimes revealing things that weren't meant to be seen like boom mics and camera tracks.
Cheers Tim L.
I think I remember hearing that Leone (like Kubrick) was sorely cheesed off with the p&s versions of his movies ruining their ornate composition. He therefore shot America open matte so with both a 1.85:1 and a 4:3 ratio in mind. Personally I think it shows with the scope of his earlier movies being lost in this one. I still prefer West to America for this very reason (and also because I hate that cheesy verion of the Beatles' 'Yesterday').
