12a and headbutts
Question:

Just saw LOTR TTT great film.During a few of the fight scenes there are headbutts. Now in AOTC which is a PG a headbutt is cut .Why?
Is 12a that much differant from PG?
Also some of the kids going in to see it there were under 8 and IMO they are too young to see it.Infact there was a group of young school kids being taken there by there teachers.
Maybe Im wrong but anyone who has seen TTT or even FOTR do you think some of the scenes were sutiable for young children not to mention the fact they more than likely dont understand the story.

Answers:

I don't think LOTR is suitable for kids because it's a bit long and complicated really, not because of the violence.
With regards to the headbutts. The BBFC said that they though kids where more likely to mimic Jedi Knights in a playground that characters from LOTR, which is certainly plausable.

It is?!
When I saw it today, cinema was filled with little bleeders who went for **** breaks throughout ... and seemed to have a gift for invariably picking the most emotional, resonant scenes to interupt!
Not to mention contant badgering of the "Mommy, why's he stabbing him" variety, demands for Daddy to read Elvish etc etc ...
12A is a bloody nightmare!

Gary A I know that's what they've said - but I still fail to understand why we have headbutts removed from Fight Club (18) but Shrek is allowed to headbutt a knight in a (PG) certificate!

No headbutts were ever removed from Fight Club, it's a myth. The angel face beating was trimmed by a few seconds, but the cuts are so minimal you have to work *really* hard to spot them! (Which entirely defeates the purpose of making them of course ...)

I think they're really screwed up with this one. I'm worried about being able to enjoy TTT as I know that I have to see it at the cinema for full effect. 3 and a half hours (inc. trailers & ads) is gonna kill the kids at the screening, and I'm sure that their discomfort will be passed on to me. It's not as if you can go to a later showing - as they turn up at all times nowadays. :shocker:

The BBFC must have their particular little things they're anal about. It used to be nunchukas and erect penises, now it's headbutts and the C word. If any of these things was a widespread social problem, you might sympathise more. Meanwhile The Bourne Identity is passed ok for kids because it doesn't contain any of the above! In 10 years time you'll get headbutts and the C word in a 12A and they'll have found something else to worry about.

It's the principle of it though. Like in the Simpsons Series 2, okay it's the commentary that's cut, but stuff that, I don't want anyone telling me what I can or cannot watch/listen-to, so off I go to get the R4. Same with LOTR: FOTR, cut extra so R1 for me (though the audio cock-ups on the PAL versions have something to do with it also).
And the headbutt in The Matrix... why?
Doesn't bother me though, I just get either the R4 or R1 for my headbutt fix :D

The Daily Mirror were one of the main reasons for the "Video Nasty" BS (cant remember the journalists name)
James Ferman didn't have the balls to reason with them (it seems)
Amazing how after he left just about anything goes :brickwall
The Daily Mail aren't even worth mentioning they go nuts over Crimewatch and Emmerdale

Easy way round the kids problem is to go to a later showing, we were there last night for a 8pm start and I think there was 1 kid in the entire audience.
I was surprised to see the headbutts too in TTT but thinking about it, it was pretty reasonable for the action to be left in. In a Jedi fight its one on one so it can be imitated, kids would have to go some to imitate a full on battle!

Unfortunately later showings don't always resolve the problem. My GF and I went last night to Cineworld in Bishops Stortford. we saw the 9:30 showing and not a single kid to be seen but we were still treated to the
"Who's that?, Why's he doing that?, Whats going on, Who's father/son is he?, That thing looks just like!, Where are they going now?"
I find it astonishing that grown adults are unable to make it through a 3 hour movie without taking a P1$$ or having a conversation.
Oh, and I nearly forgot how important it is to send Text Messages to all your mates while you watch a film :brickwall :brickwall  :(
Maybe we should gather forumites from common locations and just hire a local screen all to ourselves. At least then we would be assured of a decent movie experience.

I feel fortunate in seeing where I did now, utter silence the entire movie apart from the odd rustle of popcorn! mind you I reckon I was so focussed on the movie a fire alarm could have gone off and I wouldnt have noticed!

I had Jackie Brown completly ruined for me by a bunch of kids who sat on the front row and just behaved as though there wasn't a film on.
Adults are even worse though. I couldn't aggree more about the "Who's he?, did he just kill him?, is she his wife?" :brickwall
watch the < bleep > ing thing and you'll find out you dick

I absolutely loved this film, it wasn't better than fellowship, but it wasn't any worse either!
My viewing experience was ruined by some Asian lad ( about 19 )sitting next to me, who stunk to high heaven of BO ( no need for that in this day and age ), oh and kept cracking his knuckles everytime he saw something that he liked and got excited about ( he cracked his way through the entire film! ).
I just hope in later life he comes to regret his knuckle cracking by getting a severe case of Arthritis! ;)

A fight broke out at the beginning of one film I saw (was possibly Signs, can't remember now).
One annoying thing though...
Turbans!
I know they have to wear them etc, but the most annoying thing is to have a Turban Restricted View when watching LOTR: FOTR.. A better designed cinema may have helped though.

Is it just headbutting people that the BBFC have a problem with? Or are they offended by any sort of headbutt? Does this mean that they will have to go back and re-cut every Footy film due to people headbutting footballs?

In Lilo & Stitch it was perfectly acceptable for Stitch to break a window by heabutting it. It was rated 'U'.

throwing stars were a big problem too, which is why 'kung fu' is no longer shown on tv.

I wondered about those headbutts... They're certainly a lot more obvious and vicious than that one in AOTC.
Luckily I had some holiday time and got to see the TTT on the morning of release with virtually no children in the audience... bliss!

I will happily shout at people to shut up or turn of thier ******* phones in a cimema theatre, and have done!
Usually works too, they are so embarased it shuts them up.
Failing that i`ll just report them and get them kicked out.

Yeah thats great, but I wouldn't do that 'cause knowing my luck it'd be one of those tossers from Deadkennys post and I'd end up in some confrontation that I can't finish.
It doesn't usually happen but I'm too much of a wuss to risk it :(

Well I started the thread to discuss the rating system.
P.J has already said he cut some of the violence down to get a 12a rating.I think some of the violent scenes left in are too much for younger viewers as well as some other scenes.
TTT Spolier
The marsh with all the dead people floating in the water freaked me out and I'm 21

So it looks like all the 15 rated films are just gona get cut to 12a so little kids can get in for films they wont understand contating scenes that IMO are still too mature for them too see.And it's the mature viewer who suffers we get cut films and have to put up with kids in the cinema :brickwall

Well thats what started it off.
Back to headbutts you can't have them in a 12 as it was then IIRC but you can see Goblin smash spider-man's face into a window
It's crazy:nuts:

I nearly forgot the BBFC's other pet hate - scenes where characters are hanging by the neck and survive... because apparently kids will be rushing to imitate this. They cut hanging scenes from The Mummy and The Count Of Monte Cristo (lucky for that 'O' in 'count' or it would have been an 18 for sure!). Now I don't have a overly high opinion of the intelligence of today's kids, partially based on the success of S Club Juniors, but I find it hard to imagine a child thinking "Ooh, Brendan Fraser got hanged, that looks like fun, where's daddy's scarf?"

The thing that parents seem to ignore is the subject/content of the film. A 12 certificate does not mean that 12 year olds will enjoy it. It means that there is/should be nothing unsuitable for an under 12.
A prime example of what I'm saying can be given in 2001: A Space Odyssey. 'U' Certificate. Suitable (i.e. nothing offensive) for all - but certainly not to be enjoyed by kids. It seems that nowadays swearing has to be included in movies - just to boost the rating for 'cred'. - as Mr Nice says.
Parents should judge a film by more than just certificate.

Isn't it funny how people can get themselves worked up over him smoking a cigar, but they couldn't give a toss about him killing dozens of people.
