Question:
My current Settings are:
Panasonic 32" Flatscreen Widescreen Dolby Prologic with rear speakers.
Sony NS400 DVD player.
As I only have Dolby ProLogic with only 2 rear speakers, will playing DTS or Dolby 5.1 DVDs have any effect, will anything really change?
Also what is better, DTS or 5.1?
Thanks
First, wrong forum!
Second, you can't play DTS without a DTS Decoder and same goes for DD (although you can probably downmix to DPL on your player)
Third, as for which is better? Well depends on preference, its a hotly fought debate that I don't think we need again ;) Personally overally I prefer DTS on most discs, but the DD track can be just as good. The advantage with DTS is the DTS-ES 6.1 Discreet which DD doesn't have in the home world (they have 5.1 EX matrixed 6.1)
My DVD player does have a DTS decoder built in. I think :|

What player? Not many have them built in, most just support "DTS Digital Out" through bitstream down the coax or optical links
Sony NS400 has dts compatible output. So will playing DTS or Dolby 5.1 DVDs have any effect, will anything really change?
If your system is pro-logic then it won't handle DD5.1 or DTS correctly.
Most dvd players have DD5.1 & DTS compatible output but you need a DD5.1 & DTS amplifer for it to work.
Thanks
to get the best decent sounding and affordable equivalent to real home cinema (assuming you are looking to dosh out for the upgrade).. then i would recommend storing away your rear speakers and getting the whole biz. Basically a moderately priced amp, and a set of decent speakers. Because unless your TV has some sort of digital audio input (coaxial or optical), then you will NEVER get true 6 channel sound.
And either way, having seperate front speakers, which aren't placed right next to the screen will offer a far more spatial and expansive sound, with much more seperation. My Front speakers are about 1.5 mtrs away from my TV (43"), and the distance makes a great difference. Also a dedicated centre channel speaker on top of or below the TV, will offer a more clearer dialogue output that the one built into your TV. Also you'll want to get rid of your rear speakers, mainly because bundled DPL speakers generally aren't too good -- but if yours are ok, and their connections/specifications match those of the amp, then you may not need to replace them.
And if you don't already have a subwoofer, then get one, has it makes a difference.
sites like leconcepts.com and homecinemaheaven.com offer amp/speaker bundles. Well worth looking into if you're wanting to fully utilise DVD's potential... though if you're not too bothered about sound DPL may be more than adequate for you, but even the most casual viewer has been prompted to upgrade after me giving them a demo on my paltry £450 system.
and in 9 out of 10 cases you'll find DTS is superior than DD, though mostly noticable on high end systems.. and on even the most budget system, 3 out of 10 will clearly sound better. This is generally the case with mainstream titles anyway. DD will still rock your world though, but don't limit yourself by not getting an amp which is also DTS compatible.

I believe that the Sony NS-400 only has a built in Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder and that it does not have built in DTS decoder, it only has DTS via digial out.
Man, if I had a penny for everytime this topic's been posted...
I'd have nearly a quid!
And if I had another penny for offering MHO:
The mere fact the topic is so hottly debated and that no one can agree on the issue (apart from the fact that DTS is possibly just louder :| ) there is only one real conclusion - there isn't much in it.
My hearing's so wasted from clubbing at the ripe old age of 21 that I'm probably wasting my time with anything over mono anyway
