Question:
I bought Once Upon A Time in China 2 in HMV's 2 for 1 offer yesterday.
This evening I sat down to watch it only to find at 89 min mark it freezes up. I used the chapter menu and the rewind button to watch the rest of the movie from just after the lock up. But about every 3 minutes it pauses for a couple of seconds until the end of the movie.
Anyone else have the problem? My player is a Pioneer DVD-626D, the disc is spotless.
No problem on my Sony 325, and I wouldn't expect any either :D
P.S. According to the display, that location on the disc is the layer change.
I had a feeling it was the layer change, From Hell and Behind Enemy Lines do the same thing on my player.
Maybe its time to retire my player and trade it in for a shiny new Pioneer 656, then again my player works well with all 99% of my movies.
My Sony works with 100% of my DVDs, and should work with 100% of all DVDs. Sony co-wrote the DVD spec, and they rigidly stick to them (and their players ignore extra features that are outside of the specs but don't crash/freeze/burst-into-flames when such non-standard features occur).
The 626D is a sturdy DVD player rubber duck, if the disc ain't playing properly i'd be questioning the disc not the player! Send the bugger back & get a replacement. BTW I can't play any HKL DVD on my pioneer DVDrom drive without experiencing similar probs. Although i've never had probs playing HKL discs on proper DVD players I have to admit, they're not the best pressed discs on the market.
I think ill take the disc back to HMV for a replacement (they had many on the shelf).
There seems to be a recurring problem with HKL DVDs and layer changes with some players as they refuse to play the 2nd layer.
I had this problem with Drive (discussed here a few months ago) using Sony 725 and F21 others has same problem.
This was repeated with the My Lucky Stars DVD with other makes of player.
If the replacement fails then you could try speaking to Medusa (who own HKL). I posted contact details in the above threads (do a search).
However although they fixed Drive there was not a positive response for My Lucky Stars I think the comment was buy a better make of player (as most giving problems were cheaper generic makes). Would not wash with Sony.
I have a Wharfedale DVD 750 and never had a problem with HKL DVDs.
There is a known bug with Drive R2 and the Wharfdale 750. I had to use GoTo to access the film as it wouldn't play from load on my 750 mk1. All other HKL are fine.

Works on mine!
OUATIC2 plays fine on my 626D, though the layer change at 90:19 is noticeable (1 second pause or under).

It depends when you bought Drive. When it was originally released around 2 years ago ? it seemed to work fine on all players. The problem seems to be with new pressings they made this summer which they then sent out to loads of retailers for sales / promos. These failed to play the 2nd layer on many makes of players or it froze at the layer change and skipped a chapter (the last in the film !).
After various non working copies from HMV spoke to Medusa direct. They eventually got on the 3rd attempt a copy which works in my Sony 725 although still not on my Sony F21. Gave up at this point, although I now know they have supposedly fixed it. Therefore it depends which batch is on sale at a particular retailer to see if it will work or not for new purchases.
