Question:
Can someone please explain this film to me? I went to see it yesterday and didn't understand a damn thing, except there was something killing everyone. What was this something? Who was that guy which let Shakespear go and how come he can speak English now. Why did they take us back to the beginning of the film to show him? Was he an evil demon? Why? So many question, such a poor film!!

I guess you mean Deathwatch.
What happened is every one of the platoon died in the gas attack in the opening scene when they went over the top. The trench is some kind of test in the afterlife where, if you fail by doing evil, you get dragged down to hell I guess. All the platoon except Shakespear turn on each other (actually they don't - at least one is killed before he gets the chance but I think that's just bad writing) but Shakespear alone refuses to until right at the end and then he's pardoned because he saved the prisoner.
I think the significance of the German is that he's there to see if anyone will treat him with mercy and he lets Shakespear go because he's the only one who did. I got a vague idea that he was supposed to be some religious figure like Jesus but there's no real evidence for that. The film doesn't make a lot of sense, I agree. In terms of the story, there's no purpose whatsoever to the mysterious presence killing soldiers in barbed wire and the ending's just yet another variation on the Jacob's Ladder ending so beloved of recent horror film makers.

Whoops! Can't have been that good then, if I couldn't even remember the name!
Thanks for clearing that up. It makes a little more sense now that you've explained it!
I walked out after 30 mins it was that bad. :nono:
