(Quickie) UK PAL Region 0 playable Downunder
Question:

Hi
I think that a DVD PAL region 0 would play Ok on a unmodified australian bought DVD player?
The reason I ask is I am selling such a DVD, and a Aussie has asked me if it would. I thought I'd better check before I replyed
Thanks

Answers:

Yes, it should play fine. All DVD players should be capable of playing Region 0 and as they use PAL there will be no problem

It is very easy to get multiregion players in Oz, in fact I think that most players there are multiregion ( I remember reading this somewhere)

Answers:

Most players are indeed multi-region here out of the box. All Pioneers and Sonys are (as are most brands except Toshiba and Panasonic - and both these companies are always willing to lend an engineer's remote or firmware disc...)
Region coding - what a crock...

Didn't the Australian Parliament recognise Region coding as being a matter of restriction of trade and an attempt by DVD manufacturers to rig the prices in different parts of the world so made it effectively illegal to enforce region encoding on any dvd players sold in Australia(doesn't seem to apply to DVDrom drives). As Against the UK where the technologically illiterate residents of the houses of Parliament recognise it as an important part of copyright protection (shaved monkeys the lot of em :brickwall ).

I remember reading about this as well. The Aussies do stuff properly. Also the Aussie government have made broadcasters broadcast in analogue, digital and HDTV formats from a certain date. No luddites over there.

It was the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission that fought Sony on the issue of modchips for Playstations.
Region coding is still perfectly legit (unfortunately), although it is also perfectly legit to remove it.
As for the debacle that has been the Australian introduction of DTV, don't get me started. While we've adopted HDTV, we have used the European DVB standard to do so (which Europe doesn't actually support) rather than ATSC. Hence, there's virtually no equipment and it's all overpriced (300 quid for a STB, 1500 quid for a telly).
In addition, multi-channeling is restricted to the two Government broadcasters. Hence, while in the UK there are tonnes of channels (most admittedly broadcasting crap), here in Oz, there are the same 5 channels (mostly broadcasting crap) plus a foreign language news service on SBS and ABC Fly, whose sole purpose in life is to broadcast obscure cartoons and Rage (music video) repeats.
Give me proper SD multi-channeling any day.

Answers:

SBS shows some pretty good foreign films

I thought that it was New Zealand where it's illegal to sell DVD players with region coding built in?

Yes it is possible as I've done it myself.

Yeah, but don't forget Nine Guide
Still will be interesting to see what happens when Foxtel go digital and to see what happens to the Optus iTV project.
