Question:
My TV guide gave it one star and said it was an infantile black comedy, and the twist in the end is really obvious.
I thought this movie was really good when I saw it, I dont have it on DVD though, but i've seen it a couple of times.
What do most people think of it?
ur tv guide really does suck then, as its anything but a black comedy, in fact i find it hard to pin it down to any category.
i think most people on here like it, some love it, some say its over-rated. personally i think its a great film and David Fincher is a great director.
I think Ruskins has summed it up pretty good. It ain't the life changing experience some would have you believe, but it is a very good film :)
not bad, the twist at the end wasnt obvious for me!

I'll agree with that. Not the best movie but nod a bad movie.
I`d consider it a good film verging on great.
Superb DVD as well. You won`t be dissapointed when you shell out.:)
i think David Fincher is a great director as well.
but for some reason i cant get past the first 1/2 hour of this movie. I loved it the first time i watched it, i loved the commentary, but i cant seem to watch this film again.
well i just listed it as one of the best of the last decade :noid:
for the first hour or so, it is sublime - awe inspiring filmmaking, then the mtv-isms grate a little and the intellectual momentum dissipates but that isn't enough to dissuade me from my opinion that david fincher is the most important holywood director to arrive in the last couple of decades.
The best way I can describe it is 'refreshing'.
A very original film. In a time where movies are becoming more commercialised and unoriginal, it was a definate breath of fresh air. I do't rate it as one of the greatest though and I didn't spot the twist coming either.
good, I thought i was totally off the mark thinking it was a good movie.
My TV guide does suck then.
It's nice to see the more reserved thumbs up that people are giving it on this thread rather than the usual best film ever which I've come to expect when seeing a thread about Fight Club.
I've always felt that it gets bogged down with pointless MTV-ism's and flashy gimicks which isnt helped by what seems to be a desperate attempt to come off as an intellectual piece. The end result is a film that thinks its far more clever than what it actually is & the obvious message the film sends out is belittled even further by the pointless onscreen trickery.
(Just my opinion).
It's still worth watching though, how can you not enjoy your girlfriends fantasy man getting his face smashed in ?. :D
Fight Club is a mint movie & totally re-watchable. It mixes the humour with the very dark undertones that run through the film superbly and the R1 OOP DVD is something special in itself.
The end result is a film that thinks its far more clever than what it actually is & the obvious message the film sends out is belittled even further by the pointless onscreen trickery.
it does not have a message in the convention of most mainstream cinema which may simply be seen as crudely implemented morality tales or trite allegories - if you see the film as having a discrete 'obvious message' you are reducing what is to my mind a far more disparate set of ideas, flights of fantasy that are often arbitrary to the premise and will always inhibit those who just want heavily delineated yet witless **** like american beauty. fight club is a complete mess and not everything sticks, but that suits me fine :noid:
It's was one the better efforts by Hollywood during that year and still is, probably a hundred times better than 90% of the dirge that is released from there.
 for the film.
But I'm totally with Senor Brooke who advocates that the second disc is completely redundant of the (r1) two-disc set. Promotional filler and guff, commentaries are interesting on disc one - but would have loved an in-depth making of on disc 2.
Overrated film. Not bad, but not as good as many say.
This is a clever film with a relevant message about the clash between modern consumerism and man's primal instincts.
I think it is very similar in tone to Falling down in its condemnation of modern economics.:)
FYI - the Radio Times gave it 5 stars - that's what I like to see! :dork:
I think the film is absolutely fantastic, and although not as good as Se7en, it should be watched by everyone - just to see what their thoughts on it were.

Just a wild shot in the dark but is this TV guide titled "Guide to next weeks TV for people who have trouble with shoelaces" ?
Not a pop at you mate (as you obviously like the film) but who gives Fight Club 1 star ?
Even if you don't like the film you've got to admire its points and reflections on modern life. Its black comedy at its best. It might not be everyones cup of tea but its just one of those films that shows modern cinema can come up with something more substantial and worthwhile than constant one dimensional action films and sloppy romantic comedy/drama's (not that I have anything against that stuff)
Methinks you should buy yourself a better TV guide.
One of my favourite films.:D

Its a great film.
I strongly suspect most people who "love" this movie are male and younger in age - lets face it thats who its aimed at - I liked it quite a lot but then Im male and haven't reached middle age yet - I can see why that target group might identify with it but like Requim For A Dream I feel the underlying theme of the film is a bit "infantile" i.e. society/my life sucks so let anarchy rule etc ... - nice fantasy on a rather shallow level but dig deeper and you realise its just that

What MTV-isms are you talking about? I didn't notice any.
I hated it, but would give the film a second chance (I was a little distracted when I watched it).

requiem for a dream represents a total antithesis to fight club in the manner i represented earlier - it's humourless (although the utterly facile climax is unintentionally hilarious) and operates solely by bludgeoning it's tired themes home with banal metaphor and failing that, rather silly hyperbole (naturally, just like fight club if you subscribe to a certain school of thought) . that the daily mail liked it is pretty good evidence for my case :D
edit - if i remember correctly the daily mail liked fight club too :|
Currently one of my top films of all time.
I didn't see the twist coming, and was floored by it.
The R1 DVD just makes the whole thing better and better.
One of my Desert Island Discs.
I quite enjoyed it at the cinema but since buying it on DVD,I enjoy it more with every viewing.
As Hernster said above, the R1 DVD extras make the whole thing better too :)
Take a guess ;)
Without a doubt one of my favorite films of the last few years, having said that, lent the DVD to a few friends of mine and they hated it, they are more of a 'Titanic' couple though

Get hold of the R1 one-disc edition then; the extras on the second disc are nice, but not essential (deleted scenes and such), and you can get it from DVD Soon for ~£8.45. You could always get the R2 2-disc edition later if you really like the film and want the extra gubbins. In any case, I believe the cuts are just to reduce the brutality of one particular fight scene so I don't think it actually makes too much difference; I first saw it on video (4:3  ) and although I noticed the cut (although if other scenes were cut they weren't as obvious), it certainly didn't ruin the film or lessen its impact IMHO.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that the R1 1-disc edition is identical to the first disc of the R1 2-disc edition. Also, the second disc of the R2/4 2-disc edition is mostly identical to the second disc of the R1 2-disc edition (I believe one of the deleted scenes is missing from the R2/4). The first disc of the R2/4 edition misses out on 3 further commentaries. Finally, the R4 is apparently uncut according to http://www.dvdcompare.org.uk (I assume the R2 part of the dual coding is for continental Europe rather than the UK) and can be had from CD-Wow for £10.99, so you might want to do it the other way round -- get the R4 2-disc set for the uncut film and features, then the R1 1-disc for the extra commentaries if you like it.
Alternatively, hold out for BBC's showing of it on 22nd; www.radiotimes.com makes no mention of it being cut, and it's being shown in widescreen (although probably not 2.35:1).
Personally, I think it's a cracking film

I thought it was one of the most stupid dire films ever made. I mean what is the whole premise of the film.:brickwall Fincher is a very good director and he did a really good job with Seven and The Game, but Fight Club was just a joke.
You've obviously all forgotten the first rule of Fight Club...
Haven't seen it myself, will probably watch it this Christmas.
I didn't think the twist at the end was obvious, but having seen it once, I thought it was alright, but it's not a film I particularly want to see again.
I really enjoyed it. It kind off dug into some of the prevailing themes around at the time - anti-globalisation, anarchy, magazine dictated lifestyles etc.
It's not meant to be taken as seriously as some people may have - I mean the anti-establishment, materialism is evil etc anti-hero is dressed to the nines with more hair products on him than in the local chemist......
I liked the contradictions and irony peppering the film. I mean For the anarchists to get what they want they have to become more organised (indeed facist) than those they want to bring down!
And Fincher's direction was quite dazzling at times.
Top film imo.

Yup it has been replaced by a crappy 1 discer with just the 4 commentaries as an extra and it comes in an amaray  I got the R1 2 discer from DVDSoon last month for about £12 but they ain't got none left now.
Really like this film as well seeing as its so different and edgy compared to most 'Hollywood' films. Didn't this film cause the guy who greenlighted some of fox's biggest films i.e. Titanic to be sacked. Sure it was mentioned on a really interesting doc on the film business on BBC2 a while ago.
