Question:
Came across this film on R1 - it's out on region 2 as well but the tranfer is supposed to be awful.
Anyone got any opinions on this film, that seems to be closely related to the ideas behind 'Nightmare On Elm Street'.
I really enjoyed the film.
Kate Capshaw's in it from around the time of Indiana Jones. hmmmnn.
I seem to remember being scared by a lizard in the film...???
I've only ever seen it on TV and quite enjoyed it. Plummer is quite amusing in it..... the expression on his face when his wife finds him dead is hammy acting at its best!
I love this film. Very 80's but it still has a certain something. The semi-electronic music by Maurice Jarre is very atmospheric. Especially in the entry to dream world sequences. The effects are variable in quality from good to awful. The acting is hammy and by the numbers in a Spiderman sort of way. The train scene where Kate Capshaw and Dennis Quaid get it on is severely edited on the region 1 version which is a terrible loss to us all as Miss Capshaw really was rather pert back then.
Pert, indeed.
I thought the reoccuring dream the President had with his wife running ever towards him while The Bomb goes off in the background and passees through her was pretty good at the time, but have things moved on since then or what?

This is why I think I'll like it - 80's: the decade for the best films! ;)
It's a great piece of entertainment, a perfectly made exploitation movie directed by Joesph Ruben who went on to make The Stepfather and True Believer before his work went downhill. There are a lot of Nightmare On Elm Street similarities (this came out first) and interestingly co-writer Chuck Russell later made the 3rd in that series, Dream Warriors. I never understood how Dennis Quaid failed to become a big star in the 80s with films as good as this, The Big Easy and Innerspace to his credit. I always liked the guy, him and Kevin Costner were my favourite actors at the time and it seemed like pure luck that Costner's career took off and Quaid's didn't. I'm pleased he's having such good fortune at the moment, with The Rookie a huge hit in America (the first of his career!) and he's a good bet for an Oscar nomination for the forthcoming Far From Heaven too.
A favourite of mine at the time of it's video release and if I remember rightly there are 2 different versions of the film. I own the (gasp) ex rental VHS and it's longer than the cinema release. Just been to IMDB to check my feelings and I am right. The tv version is the proper version too. Infamous Nunchuckas, amazing how BBFC hate them isn't it.
I have the Image Entertainment release of this film. It has an NTSC picture, DD and DTS 5.1 sound, and is anamorphic widescreen. AFAIK it is not 'cut'. Although primarily intended for sale in the US it is region free (at least - it plays on either R1 or R2 player, haven't tested all other regions).
And the video transfer is better than average.
Snapper Case.:nono:
Its on the Sci-Fi channel quite regulaly...
infact its on again on 10/01/2003....
Good film.....
