First Prequel?
Question:

During a lunchtime discussion the subject of prequels was raised....where did they come from and who made the first ( and is therefore to blame )? Star Wars:The Phantom Menace was an obvious starting point, Highlander 3 was mentioned ( although we're not sure about this one ) however both are relatively recent.
We decided Godfather 2 doesn't count as only part of it is prior to the first.
Any better ideas?
Cheers
Simon

I think TPM was the one that started it all ... now any series can have a Prequel

That raises an interesting point. Was Red Dragon a prequel, or was it just a remake of the film (Manhunter) that started the whole Hannibal Lecter series of films? I reckon it's the latter.

Answers:

I read the book Red Dragon before I saw Silence of the Lambs back in 1990.... but although the book was good (and Manhunter) I couldn;t be bothered to watch RD in the cinema.

My first thoughts were Butch & Sundance: The Early Years & Zulu Dawn (both 1979).
I'm sure there must be earlier examples though.

Just done a search on IMDB (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0071127) for prequel, and the earliest one it came up with is Alvin Purple Rides Again (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0071127) from 1974 - Presumably because one of it's working titles was Foreplay the Prequel. Although it's not clear whether it actually is a prequel

The Good the Bad and the Ugly is apparently prequel - see IMDB where they don't list it as one by keyword, but in the trivia sectionit talks about how it show him picking up stuff you see in the other films eg. the poncho.
Must get round to wathcing that dvd.

You do realise Michael Brooke is going to come along and put us all to shame with his encyclopedic film knowledge, don't you? He'll no doubt tell us about some 1893 arthouse feature that was actually a prequel to an equally obscure film from 1892. Both of which only 4 people in the world have ever heard of, and one of them was the director. :p :D

Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990) is the prequel based on the oldest movie yet on the thread with original Psycho being made in 1960.
Oh, and the original is on TV right now.

It's not - it's a sequel to Alvin Purple, strangely enough. :)
Another Part of the Forest (1948) is a prequel to The Little Foxes (1941).

In the 1930s there were a lot of films starring the Dead End Kids (most famously Angels With Dirty Faces and Angels Wash Their Faces), but not having any decent reference book handly I can't be sure, but I'm sure there was a prequel in there somewhere, though not sure how much they count as some of the characters changed names though the films were set in the same 'universe' - such as Billy Halop who plays Soapy in AWDF and Billy Shafter in AWTF.
