Question:
I don't know if this has been posted already, but sounds like good news!
From the horse's mouth so to speak. From an interview with Peter Jackson from Newline's official LOTR newsletter:
In the book, the Battle of Helm's Deep is a very violent affair. How does that translate onto the screen?
We've got a PG-13 battle scene, but it's a fairly gritty battle. It's about as far as we could possibly push it within that rating. We filmed some heads and limbs being chopped off which we've taken out. We'll probably put them back in the DVD, which will have an R rating.
 that will rock!
he meant to say we'll probably put them back in the region 1 dvd but for region 2 we'll substitute Mickey Mouse and bouncy arrows :p
Even though films are still being hacked about to hit certain ratings it's great to see directors saying "we had to take this bit out - don't worry though, we'll probably stick it back in on the dvd so you won't miss out". Better than before when you just had to go without.
Of course if he is saying that it will have to be an R with those scenes re-instated then you can of course forget it on R2 as those idiots at the BBFC don't allow the same film to have two different certificates even though in theory it will not be the same film as one will be an Extended Cut thus a totally different film as TFOTR was.

You never know. From what Peter Jackson said there, it sounds like the STANDARD DVD will be the R-rated version as well. Therefore, if EIV didn't have a problem with going for a higher rating, there's nothing to stop them releasing it uncut.

Actually, thats a pretty neat idea, I like the idea of Two towers statues (though I didn't actually get the bookend version of FOTR)
It would be good to get this extra footage. Thanks for the info beobrand
I'd really like this to be true, and I don't wish to be a doom merchant, but weren't there similar rumours 12 months ago that FOTR would have an R rating cut for the DVD, with extra, violent footage reinstated?
Except that was a rumour, this is in an official NewLine publication.
