Kiss of the Dragon kicks @$$!
Question:

Just saw this movie with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised... no actually, I was blown away, and so were most of the people in the audience! After a rather slow and quiet start, things took a sudden turn, and I could sense how the audience was surprised at some of the over the top violence... but by the end, people were roaring, clapping and cheering after every "Jet Li" moment. Don't be fooled by some of the trailers floating around, where it seems as if Jet Li plays some wisecracking kung fu beater upper. He plays it cool! Much like how he was in Lethal Weapon 4. And some of the tricks he pulls off.... aaaah!
****Small Spoiler********
If you thought the needle scenes in Audtion were outrageous, wait till you see what Jet can do with them. And how many times can he dodge a bullet ????!!!
****Small Spoiler END********
After Romeo must Die, I was shocked that Jet Li turned down a role in the Matrix sequel, but this movie will do just nicely.
I won't re-iterate what a lot of reviews have already mentioned, but to people who were disappointed by RMD, this will bring you new confidence in the Jet. It whoops RMD's soft behind. Go see it with a bunch of friends who you know are going to enjoy this type of movie! Sometimes, the right audience makes a good movie even better.

I saw this a couple of weeks back, not really a big fan of this genre but none the less i enjoyed it, Jet Li is pretty impressive in his role and the french baddy(cop) is good also...and the action is excellent.
Not bad at all.

Bridget Fonda is awesome! So cute and real in that role, I love her, even more than the beach chick she played in Jackie Brown....mmmmm :o :D

kiss of the dragon ? ... WOOO-HOOO!!!!!!
what a movie! saw this last friday night at the 'frightfest 2001' in london and absolutely loved it! as everyone has said above, a great return to form for jet li and the violence - absolutely brutal, but 'cool as' at the same time.
the minimal (compared to la-la-land, not what MB would call a minimalist film) french style added enormously to the quality of the film, i thought - in a similar fashion to Leon.
roll on that R1 dvd! :)

How violent is this film then? I am a big fan of Jet Li but don't think my wife would be too pleased if I took her to see it and there was some over the op violence. Not worth the hassle ;)

This movie is horrible!! Jet Li needs to go back to doing the kung fu he did best instead of doing this 'hard Chinese guy visits your country' act he's doing. And the fights would be so much better if they stopped taking an MTV-bred director who wants to play around with a camera (wtf was the vertical swish pan he used for??!) like it's a toy. Slo-mo, flashback...you name it, this guy had to put it in.
The scenes between Fonda (looks great by the way, the one redeeming feature) and Jet are actually quite well acted (his English is better). But the villain is a caricature and the audience (they were French, maybe that explains it) just burst out laughing at the over-the-top violence and the bizarre seriousness the film had.
N.B. I thought RMD was quite bad also, so perhaps if you liked that then you should go see this. I'm just waiting for The One, hope that's gonna be
good.

although i've only seen a very poor quality bootleg (slap me on the wrist why don't you!) I really quite enjoyed this film and thought that the martial arts was pretty darn good (although the copy i watched was quite choppy). Sure, its not a patch on his Hong Kong work but its a darn sight better than Romeo Must Die (appalling by the way, fun, but poor) and I really liked the hard hitting nature of it all (makes a change from the usual dummed down stuff)...
have you seen 'The One' trailer? don't think you'll like that as he plays both types of character, one a bad guy, the other a good guy.

The One looks like it will be a cool no brainer action flick to me, anyhoo when does Kiss Of The Dragon come out over here in the flicks then?
Actually could some kind soul direct me to a website where I could find out forthcoming UK release dates? Cheers :D

Answers:

agreed - The One does look pretty cool, just didn't think it would be mikeyman's cup of tea considering his opinion of Kiss of the Dragon.
for release dates, why our very own forum has a list!
no date for The One yet, the IMDB (http://us.imdb.com/ReleaseDates?0267804) lists the US release for the 2nd November, no sign of a UK date - well there's a surprise!

i didn't really like the fight scenes that much, although they were a damn sight better than RMD. I mean, the fight scenes rely on choppy editing so you can't really see the skill of jet. In RMD they were all set to a techno-beat soundtrack, with outrageous wires (which sometimes you could see BTW), etc. - I mean, what's the point of having Jet Li and then using computers? The man has skills!
I'm more disappointed with the 'hard nut' character he plays, I would prefer it if he showed some more vulnerablity instead of being a superman (Jackie Chan over Bruce Lee). His 'invincible' character worked for Fong Sai Yuk and Wong Fei Hung, but in the modern day I find it a little stupid :(
I'm hoping The One will be good because perhaps Jet will do some proper fight choreographing, but if he's fighting himself it could suck with the CGI again...fingers crossed!

Bloody violent, splatter style (although, I'd rather be careful how I word it, because people may get the wrong idea). Best would be to give you an example.
In once scene, one of the henchemen gets a live grenade/flash banger in his sweat shirt and the main villain pushes him into a laundry chute where Jet was hiding, and the henchman explodes. After the smoke clears, you see how the henchman's lower body part (what's left of him) hits the ground in slow motion, leaving a trail of blood as it slides against the wall.
Having said that, although my mom (!) felt it was too violent, she thought the film was very exciting and moving... but I guess, that's just my mom.
Ben, so you were there, too? I just realised why the audience seemed to have enjoyed this, if you consider what other movies were playing then. Great audience.
EDIT: New spoler tags... took me a coupla tries :p

Not violent enough for me, compared to his Original flicks, I liked the fighting much more in the like of OUATIC, MFIAH....it was better the ROMEO MUST DIE but I still think the he can do better! He wants to get someone like TSUI HARK (I think) he made Van Dammes fight scenes look great in Double Team

Hmmm...Thats odd! That was the first scene I though of when Richy asked that question – I wonder why? :D
One bit I enjoyed was the part when:
He walked into the Karate class with a room full of blackbelts, and gave them the slight ‘oh here we go again, BRING IT ON!’ look, before kicking their @sses!
Very enjoyable film BTW….Good stuff, but then again I like all films along these lines :)

Question to those who have seen it.
Maybe I wasn't paying attention at the beginning, but why exactly did Tcheky Kayro (sp?) kill the chinese ambassador in the first place. Well, the rest of the story revolves around Jet Li clearing his name, but we never establish the bad guy's motivation.
Edit: Spoiler tags, just in case.

Answers:

purpledump, you might want to cover up that spoiler above with the spoiler tag?
do you mean the guy on the boat?? if so .... when he meets with jet li on the boat he is going to have his suspicions proved correction - li is innocent. this can only be bad news for karyo's character as it means he'll eventually be rumbled, so killing this guy as well becomes necessary.
if you mean the very first guy he sends the prostitute in to kill in the hotel then .... he and his fellow corrupt officers are waist-deep in the drugs trade (and the rest) and there must be some 'heat' around the corner. so he wants to frame someone else to make sure it doesn't come back on him.

Thanks Ben. The answer I was looking for is in your second paragraph! :)

I'll be reviewing this tomorrow, and based on the trailer's i'm looking forward to it. I must admit though, Jet Li's fighting might be good but he appears to have had a charisma-ectomy.

couldnt have said it better myself!
I mean how sad was the part we he just switched the lights of on the 2 men and then ran away :D
if it wasnt for the fact the fighting in his original films were so good I would have liked them!
