5 Most Overated Films of 2002?
Question:

Just thought this would be a good alternative to the current Top 5 films of 2002. :)
Not necesarily the worst films of the year but the ones that other people & critics have raved about and you just couldn't see what all the fuss was about !!!! Get the idea?
My own choices would be
1) Spiderman
2) Royal Tennenbaums
3) Monster's Ball
4) The Man Who Wasn't There (2002?)
5) Can't think of number five at the minute !!!!!!

4. Minority Report (should have been much better)
5. Rt Proof Fence (great performances, powerful film but not really much too it)

Royal Tenenbaums is a 2001 movie really.
Most overrated and overpayed crap of 2002:
1. Lord of the Rings
2. Spiderman
3. Harry Pothead
4. Attack of the Clones

Answers:

I enjoyed all three up to a point, but <I>The Royal Tenenbaums, Monster's Ball</I> and especially <I>Bowling for Columbine</I> impressed me rather less than I'd been led to believe they would.
I unreservedly loved <I>Rushmore</I>, which may explain why I was less wowed by <I>The Royal Tenenbaums</I>, as it seemed to me that diminishing returns were starting to set in: Anderson is clearly a hugely original and gifted film-maker, but it seemed to me that ultimately it was little more than a retread of the earlier film on a larger canvas.
<I>Monster's Ball</I> was pretty good for the most part, but I thought Halle Berry was badly let down by a script that asked her to state the blindingly obvious every five minutes - as a result, her performance was the kind of showily histrionic affair that the Academy loves (and they proved it) but which I felt worked against the film. But if he gets hold of a script that can match the subtlety of his direction, Marc Forster is clearly a talent to watch.
The really frightening thing about <I>Bowling for Columbine</I> isn't the gun statistics that Michael Moore dug up so much as the way it's been hailed as the last word in cutting-edge satire - but even the most superficial comparison between, say, the <I>Brass Eye</I> paedophile special (for my money the most unnervingly brilliant satire of the last few years - I've watched it half a dozen times and still marvel at the way it skewers its targets so precisely) finds it falling way short. The Charlton Heston interview in particular is an embarrassment - Moore should have left it on the cutting room floor, as it says far more about him than it does about Heston (who I thought behaved like a perfect gentleman under the circumstances). The film certainly has its moments, but not nearly enough for it to pass muster as the definitive state-of-the-nation exposé that it's been hailed as.

I loved the Royal Tennenbaums but it wasn't the laughfast they would have you believe so I say it was overhyped.
Signs was also nowhere near as good as Unbreakable (not a popular opinion I know but wait until number 3;) )
Lord of the Rings bored me stupid and after 2 attempts I still haven't still it all the way through so it was way overhyped.
Having a thread about which films were overated or over hyped is still more interesting than the usual worst films of the year threads which are usually the same thing as people just slag of films they were disappointed by. There were clearly worse films than the above 3 released this year and as we're talking hype there will be the possibility of you listing a film you actually liked though not as much as you expected.
I didn't think AOTC was hyped much. All I read was that you'll like it if you like the Star Wars films and its better than The Phantom Menace. Both true surely?

I thought it was hardly hyped at all - the marketing was amazingly restrained in comparison with three years ago.
Oh, and for what it's worth, out of all the films I saw this year, <I>Gosford Park</I> probably came the closest to delivering exactly what I thought I was paying for - so no complaints at all!

Just about every film mentioned on here deserves it! Anyway, especially these...
Spider-man was bizarrely described as one of the best superhero movies ever. It was almost the worst! Crap story, crap leads, crap villain, crap FX, crap direction, etc. Possibly better than the fourth Superman & Batman films, slightly worse than the bland Batman Forever. Utterly forgettable.
The Royal Tennenbaums seemed like the most 'forced' film of the year. Some nice ideas here and there, but it felt like the creative team were trying to be quirky with none of it coming naturally. Advice for Wes and Owen - try less hard next time!
Monster's Ball was a TV movie that should have gone DTV. Hardly terrible, but didn't deserve any kind of recognition.
Bowling For Columbine was supposed to expose 'Dumb America' and it did in a way. But only because the man who has taken it upon himself to do so came across as just another dumb fat American! His attempts to demonise Lockheed Martin were done with all the skill of a toddler in a tantrum. But amazingly it received probably the best notices of the year (though no one on here has yet to give it the thumbs up)! Heston 1 Moore 0! And remember, that was after Moore edited the interview himself! What the hell was the rest of it like?

Answers:

I have to disagree on Bowling for Columbine. I thought Heston made a royal **** of himself with the statement that 'America has a more violent history than other countries'. It kinda proved a stereotype of an ignorant yankee that we all like to believe is true.
Ido think that more should have tried to stick to the funny stuff and not gone on a crusade of morality with all that K-mart rubbish though. As if you can blame the shop that sold the ammunition for what happened at Columbine, it was just plain stupid and cheap. I think he should have stuck with more insights as to how easily accessable guns are.
I quite enjoyed it overal though.

Yes, but the problem with that particular interview is that Moore made it very clear that it was a set-up - we actually saw him effectively conning his way into Heston's house (yes, I know Moore genuinely is a life member of the NRA, but it was pretty clear that he was just using this to give a misleading impression of his views).
Now had he asked Heston formally for an interview and given him at least a broad idea of the topics he'd be asking in advance, Heston might have had time to prepare something rather more insightful. But as it is, we have someone who is obviously old and unwell (indeed, he may have had early Alzheimers' symptoms even then) who is basically being exploited - and and what makes it worse is that the film-maker is so smugly certain that we're as anti-Heston as he is that he shows us all the mechanics outlining just how much he's exploiting his subject and going out of his way to make him appear a fool.
I was nauseated by that interview long before Heston (rightly, IMHO) decided to call a halt - and the subsequent business with the child's photo was simply contemptible. Even worse is that the film has been building up to this moment - but what does its position at the end of the film attempt to prove? That Charlton Heston is single-handedly responsible for everything that's wrong with America today? Isn't that as absurd as the soundbite montage earlier in which similar accusations are hurled at Marilyn Manson and <I>South Park</I>, and we're encouraged to laugh at the naive fools who believe this?
On the other hand, I thought the K-Mart scene was very effective - and Moore deserves genuine credit for getting them to change their entire policy on ammunition sales (the look of surprise on their faces seemed entirely genuine to me!)

There seems to be an assumption among some of these posts that "The Royal Tenenbaum" was intended as a comedy. Granted, the trailer suggests this and certainly it is occasionally very funny but I don't think I've seen a more tragic film this year, let alone one which moved me as much as Anderson's movie did. It strikes me as an intentionally serious film with some good jokes here and there. Having just seen it in a double bill with Rushmore at the York City Screen, it seems a much more considerable work in every respect - and Hackman is quite brilliant in the central role, probably the best part he's received since 'Unforgiven'.

Apparently not. He had been a member at one point (possibly still was) but he upped the membership when he began filming. He now claims this was because he intended to run against Heston as head of the NRA (which he would have to be a lifer to do), then decided to make a documentary instead! But, as I mentioned in the review forum, and you mention again above, his eventual use of said membership in the film was less than admirable.

McD may I ask why you prefer Superman or even Batman Forever to Spiderman? I personally really enjoyed Spiderman, it blended humour, action and a relatively good story considering the restrictions on such a mainstream, large budgeted film. While it wasn't everything I had hoped for (simlarly to most comic book adaptions it was fairly plodding in places if you know any of the characters/history), it was fantastic entertainment and a good starter for a franchise in which the characters and stories have the potential to develop.
Do you honestly think Terence Stamp in a leotard is a better villain then a loopy, schizo, Willem Dafoe or are you just pulling my leg? :)

There are NO restrictions on such a large budgeted film!

No no no! Franchise should be a dirty word! 'Come on pet, let's go see that starter for a franchise tonight.' Again look at the bloody endless 'start-up' material on the original Superman and how amazing it all was. The film has been on for exactly 50 minutes (to the second!) before Christopher Reeve even shows up!*
*on the R1, will be sooner on the R2 ;)

1/ Yes, he was infinitely more memorable. And had tons of good dialogue. (Even if I thought for years that he said 'One day you will bow down before me, Jor-El. Both you, and one day - your ass!)
2/ How do you know it was Willem Dafoe? It could have been Pee Wee Herrman in that costume. Or Jeffrey Jones. Or both.

I imagine there were a great many restrictions - at that budget level, almost every element of the film has to be checked and approved by the powers that be before anything's shot. A tiny number of directors have the clout to overcome this, but I doubt very much Sam Raimi is in that league just yet.
And of course with this particular film further restrictions were inadvertently imposed by Al-Qaeda, whose destruction of a key location meant a last-minute reshoot and change of ending!

Isn't NRA's policy like the catholic church's: Once a member, always a member? I thought so anyway - helps them claim very high memberships that way...
But, as I mentioned in the review forum, and you mention again above, his eventual use of said membership in the film was less than admirable.
Well I'll hardly be weeping over an NRA membership being misused :D
But re: Moore -I think he's being given a such a wide platform for his stuff just because he's entertainingly stupid - his performance on Question time in NY was a prime example of the loony lefty the media so love to use... He's right some of the time but unable to discuss things reasonably without bringing out the usual stickmen to destroy ("bush isn't legitmate anyway!")...
Anyway my most overated films are:
<b>Spideman</b> - acceptable but hardly outstanding
<b>Clones</b> - better than TPM maybe, but still no good!
<b>From hell</b> -stylish in parts but not that good really
<b>Insomnia</b> -had quite the opposite effect on me...

<i>Rt-Proof Fence</i> was a disappointment for me. After the great beginning to Philip Noyce's career with <i>Newsfront, Heatwave</i> and <i>Dead Calm</i> followed by a decade and a half of competent mediocrity in Hollywood, I certainly wanted to applaud his comeback. (I may still do so - I haven't seen <i>The Quiet American</i> yet.)
There are plenty of good things in the film: Christopher Doyle's camerawork, Peter Gabriel's music. Noyce gets good though not outstanding performances out of his cast. Kenneth Branagh as Aborigine Protector A.O. Neville is a quietly chilling portrait of the kind of paternalism that thinks it's has everyone's best intentions at heart.
But the film doesn't hit home somehow. I think Philip Kemp has it right in <i>Sight & Sound</i>: Noyce and co commendably try to avoid Hollywood-style sentimental excesses but go too far in the opposite direction. The early scene where the children are taken from their parents, is wrenching; but the rest of the film leaves us too much at a distance.
I saw the film first in the cinema. A second viewing on DVD didn't change my mind.

I thought it was terrible. Just saw this once on the big screen, but I could almost hear the director working the cast in that scene (knowing he'd just overdub later). They appear to be clearly acting to an off-screen instructor with loads of sudden over-reactions. And it looks particarly bad when both women collapse simultaneously (to some unseen cue) when the car finally gets away from them at the end of it.
I felt like I was watching a scene from Shadow of the Vampire!

To come to Total Films defence slightly, they 'only' said it was the 2nd best movie of the year. Donnie Darko was 1st. It was the reader's poll that saw Spider-Man come out top, which I agree is a complete joke.

Strangely enough, I think the Austin Powers films get better - Goldmember was hilarious. However, I think it boils down to what viewers want in the humour, and for me, the same regurgitated stuff is perfectly fine.

A lot of these films seem to be huge blockbuster movies, which we should know by now are very often not very good at all due to mass marketing and studio involvement and to stick up for Peter Jackson, Sam Raimi, Spielberg it is a surprise that there respective films turned out as good as they where.
For instance I find a lot of the critical darling independent films to be a huge let down ( Rt proof fence being the biggest ), obviously not as much as a lot of the blockbusters are.
I thought this year was far greater for huge films since the downward spiral began with Batman and Robin, even Attack of the Clones was a lot of fun, which is what it was supposed to be when I think about it.
Good thread though, seeing the general consesus of things, especially seeing as earlier in the year the films were being praised on these forums ( people have had time to reflect perhaps ).
Someone needs to start up an under-rated film thread, that would be one I would probably be able to contribute to better.

hmm 3 of my Fav movies of the year have been mentioned here....I loved Signs (although I agree Unbreakable was better) although I know alot of my mates went in expecting a run of the mill scary alien movie due to the trailer and ended up missing the deeper story which i enjoyed so much, Oceans Eleven was imho a really enteraining, well cast and well shot film and Donnie Darko was just fantastic, although this was another movie alot of my mates just didnt seem to get.
As for my top 5 overarted films would have to be
1) Minority Report, the movie was seriously let down in my eyes by Speilbergs inability to end a film when it should do. When Tom Cruises character actually reached the stage where he committed the murder was imho the perfect place to stop and the scenes after this were just unneccesary and made the movie less of an impact.
2) Spiderman, Good movie but by the time I saw it the hype was so great that it didnt meet my expectations
3) Road to Perdition - the pace of the movie was just too slow which caused my attention to drift at times
4)Vanilla Sky - Another movie that was good but 'Open your eyes' the spanish movie which it was a remake of
5)Scorpion King - Loved the two Mummy movies but without the humour of these the Scorpion King didnt work as well

JonB - don't worry - he hasn't spoiled it for you. As this film shows events before they happen, the moment 'wakey' refers to is seen (if not actually happening yet) from relatively early on.
His comments on the film are also innacurate but to elaborate would make things worse. You've nothing to fear however (although I appreciate that's not your point, and 'wakey' could have been more careful).
