Austin Powers 1 (region 1) in an amaray?
Question:

Does anyone know if this has been repackaged in an amaray? When Blade 2 came out I bought Blade again to get it an amaray case (the canadian version) as ********* stated specifically it was in an amaray.
Now I have Goldmember in an amaray, would like to get the first one in same case. I know the r2 is in an amaray and is many people's preferred edit - but I saw the r1 version about 6 times before I ever clapped eyes on the r2 and now much prefer the shorter cut (cos it's what i'm used to I suppose).
Any ideas?

Answers:

I believe the edition in the triple boxset is in an amaray. Whether that means the standalone version will be in an amaray is 50/50.
And I too bought the Blade amaray version as well and how much more better does it look than a poxy snapper.

The scenes cut from the R1 are amongst the best in the film IMO.

Which scenes were cut and why?

Do you mean that you have the R1 US Blade in an Amaray? Not the Canadian?

Answers:

Austin Powers Region 4 is in an Amray.

The henchman family and the henchman stag night scenes have been removed from the film but are in the deleted scenes. All of the Christian Slater scenes are gone as well, these are not in the deleted scenes. As for why, I'm not sure. Maybe the editor had a sense of humour bypass?

also the old release of APIMOM was in the wrong ratio, 1.85 cropped from 2.35. don't know if they ever sorted that out.

I was glad to see the scene with rob lowe (the henchman) cut in the R1 as he turns up in the sequal. It looks wierd having him play two different roles in the R2 versions of the films.I do think the Christain Slater scene is funny and wished it was in the R1.

Austin Powers 1 and 2 are now in amaray.
They are sitting on my shelf as we speak

what is the ratio of the first one dvdfreak? i still haven't got these and was considering the bargain priced triple set, i can live without the footage (probably) but i can't stand watching the whole thing cropped.

Answers:

Austin powers 1 (R1) has the film transferred in a 2:1 aspect ratio, slightly less wide than the theatrical ratio of 2.35:1. It does change a few times during the film as the split screen scenes sees the film reverts back to 2.35:1. So the R2 UK transfer is definitely the one to go for.
(However this is not a p&s job, actually the matting has been slightly lifted for R1 DVD, just like the laserdisc. But I still prefer the R2 because that's how the film was shown in theatres and the changing of the aspect during the film in R1 is annoying)
The conclusion is this:
AP1: Winner is R2 for extra footage and OAR
AP2: Winner is R1 for extra doctor Evil "documentary"
So, am I to understand that Austin powers 2 has been re-released in the US as a non-bilingual, ENGLISH language Amaray from New line?
If so, good riddance to the old snapper. Although I still prefer a snapper to the ugly French language Amarays from Canada (blade 2, fire walk with me etc)

forgot to add the amaray cases come in groovy colours as well :)

Hmmm, might actually consider getting the triple-pack. I only have the R1 Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, at present, and although the snapper is one of the nicer ones, I'd rather have the groovy amaray!
As the for the under-matting on the R1 Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, I'm not too fussed. I heard at the time that it was the director's intention, as he prefered the 2:1 ratio for home viewing. I'm a big 'Director's Intention' advocate, as opposed to 'Original Theatrical Ratio' advocate. Look at most of Kubrick's movies - he wanted them to be seen 1.33:1, but the theatrical versions were matted at 1.85:1 (with the exceptions of 2001 and Spartacus, which he shot anamorphically at 2.35:1). So I'd rather see Full Metal Jacket in 1.33:1 and Austin Powers in 2:1, if those are the ARs intended by the directors.
As for the extra footage on the R2: the henchman bit I could definitely live without, but the sherbert bit with Christian Slater is classic. At least they're in the deleted scenes. Anyone know how the R2 picture/sound compare to the R1? I'd imagine the R1 was superior, being New Line, although Pathe aren't bad at all.

Answers:

Pathe? Don't you mean EIV...?

Answers:

No, I believe Pathe holds the rights to the first movie in the UK. EiV have the rights to the rest (which is why you don't see a triple pack in this country).

Did the R2 version of Austin Powers 1 get re-released with the sound problem fixed? The version I've got glitches all through the movie, as the audio is mastered wrong - it's too loud or something, causing the DD amp to keep losing the signal lock.

Yeah this is right. I have the R2 versions of the first two movies on my shelf and IMOM is a Fox Pathe release whereas TSWSM is from EIV.
Haven't got round to buying the third one yet. Think I will although it wasn't an amazing film.
