Question:
Inspired by Perfecta's French DVD listings I thought it might be useful to list the excellent range of non-Korean films available on Korean DVD. These all have removable Korean titles (and almost always English ones), often have exclusive DTS soundtracks and all the non-English language films listed have optional English subtitles.
Several online suppliers will sell them - I can't be much help in that department.
Please feel free to add any I've missed - I'll update as I go along
Forbidden Games (Jeux Interdits) - very cheap
The Tin Drum - same as deleted Kino disc (but Criterion is imminent)
Divided We Fall
Heat - DTS - reviewed at DVDTimes
Seven Years in Tibet - DTS
Total Recall - DTS - otherwise identical to R1 SE
Basic Instinct - DTS - ditto
Avalon - DTS
The Unbearable Lightness of Being - same as the deleted Criterion
Malena - DTS
Streets of Fire - DTS
Guys & Dolls - DTS (!)
Farewell My Concubine - reviewed by Noel M at DVDTimes
The Eye
Jean de Florette - as UK, NONANAMORPHIC (my mistake) but roughly half the price
Manon des Sources - ditto
Live Flesh - anamorphic, same as R1, 6/7 pounds
All About My Mother - ditto
Jamon Jamon - anamorphic, cheap
Abre Los Ojes - anamorphic, cheap
La Haine - similar to French R2, no commentary, some deleted scenes, sourced from Canal-Plus I think
Taste of Cherry - port of Criterion
Indiana Jones Trilogy - cheap, widescreen and legal but picture is poor
Silence of the Lambs - DTS - otherwise same as R1 SE
Kanzo Sensei - recent film from Imamura
Love Letter
Beijing Bicycle - excellent Starmax release, been mentioned on the forums already
Yi Yi - best picture of the available releases, lacking commentary from UK R2
Breaking the Waves - DTS
L'amant (The Lover)
Decalog - 6 discs, 2 episodes per disc plus 'I'm So-So' on 6th
Three Colour Trilogy - MK2 ports but only features are subtitled
Little Buddha - don't know if this is available elsewhere, non-anamorphic disc is alright
Suspiria - Anchor Bay port, 2-disc set - pretty cheap
Evil Dead - Book of the Dead - I believe the R1 is OOP
Fitzcarraldo - same as R2/R1, cheaper
Swept Away - the original, recently remade by the Ritchies, about a fiver
Tess - barebones, non-anamorphic, very cheap
Betty Blue - directors cut - same as R4
Pola X - licensed from Fox Lorber's decent version
Mauvais Sang - ditto
Stalingrad - widescreen, original language, don't know if anamorphic
Dario Argento's Opera - DTS
Bicycle Thieves - same as the average R1 release
Diva - nonanamorphic I think, some extras
A Short Film About Killing - anamorphic, subs, text extras
A Short Film About Love - ditto - Veronique might be imminent too
Shaolin Soccer - DTS
Bring It On - DTS
Dances With Wolves - DTS - 2 discs, includes commentary
Wooden Man's Bride - Chinese film from Starmax
American Beauty - DTS
Antz - DTS
Million Dollar Hotel - commentary, extras, may be same as R1
Virus - DTS
Shadow of the Vampire - DTS
Caligula - anamorphic, claims to be Directors Cut but that could mean several things in this case
The Last Emperor - 2 discs, Director's cut on 1st (non-anamorphic) and theatrical cut (anamorphic) on 2nd. Possibly the best region for this title
Girls On Top - DTS - German soft porn with no subs..
Gimme Shelter - DTS - Criterion port, English cover - almost identical and MUCH cheaper
Dersu Uzala - 3 discs, 2 disc Ruscico version AND American release
Kids Return - Kitano, anamorphic
Hana-Bi - ditto
Laurence Olivier Set - Henry V & Hamlet - Criterion ports in one box
Ivan the Terrible - same as above
School of Flesh - Isabelle Huppert, anamorphic
Tosca - DTS - from same director as above
Le Roi Danse - recent French film, nice set, maybe DTS
Pollock - Special edition, probably same as R1 but released by 'Artifact' publishing - how not to name a DVD-company...
Days of Being Wild - nonanamorphic, but from a decent company, may be superior to HK one
The Mission - DTS - perhaps the only region for this film, non-anamorphic
Charade - port of deleted Criterion
1492 : Conquest of Paradise - DTS - anamorphic, port of French release (the only other anamorphic one)
Enter the Dragon - DTS - special edition
Eat Drink Man Woman
Samurai Fiction
As Tears Go By - Wong Kar-wai's debut, sold under the alternate title Fatal Checkout
Legend of Zu - DTS
The Opium War
A Touch of Zen - anamorphic
Fighter Blue
Centre Stage - Maggie Cheung, Tony Leung - any good?
The Crow - DTS - 2-disc SE, R0
Come & See 2-disc Ruscico, will add more of these ports
Nikita anamorphic, same as (deleted) French release
Agonia - Ruscico port
Chungking Express - Rolling Thunder edition
Nixon - DTS - director's cut, 2-discs
A large amount of these discs aren't region-coded, good for R2-only owners who want decent US-style special editions and NTSC soundtracks :dork:
Have removed The Virgin Spring, the non-Criterion Bergmans don't seem to have English subtitles.
There are also about a dozen earlyish Criterion-ports released by Spectrum (Cirrus has listed some in the Movie Review forum) and about the same amount of Ruscicos. They are considerably cheaper than buying the originals and are completely legal. The Ruscico's will probably have some PAL-NTSC down-conversion problems - or perhaps not, Solaris may be the only one affected
I've seen Solaris, dersu uzala and andrei rublyov Korean Spectrum DVD ports of the ruscico releases and only Solaris has the PAL to NTSC conversion jerk.
What about A Short film on killing and a short film on love?
Also I thought jean de florette and manon de sources were the french ports which are signifcantly better than the UK r2s?
I think you need to change the title to Korean dvd exclusives or something because I know many people would just look over the thread as yet ANOTHER thread about korean movies ... not that thats a bad thing but I'm bias as you know :p :D
Done so Cirrus!
Have the two 'Short Film About...'s been released - or is that just a question about availability?
Is there any difference between French and UK 'Jean de Florette' (have changed it anyway)
The two short films have just been released but I don't know if its an exclusive or not ...
The french jean de florette is suppose to be the best version available and in anamorphic but no eng subs I think ... hmmm not too sure ... as I have forgotten the details I read somewhere ...
I get off work early tonight and will be heading into the big city to look for a new DVD player, the largest music/DVD shop is open til about 11pm so I'll have a good browse for those 'Short films'..
I thought the UK 'Jean de...' was anamorphic? the Korean one is.
Adding some Anchor Bay ports to 1st post.. not really exclusives, but significantly cheaper - can you/anyone recommend a Korean e-tailer that stocks a good range of non-Korean films?
The etailers are all in korean though ...
dvdtitle.co.kr
dvdstore.co.kr
dvd.co.kr
theres a whole list of them in the christmas in august catalogue ...
Ok I've asked about jean de florette in the french thread ... let them do the ground work :D
You can also add the korean doberman which i suspect is the french port but the french version doesn't have eng subs.
Ah, I saw 'Dobermann' in the shops but I don't think it has English subs. - same goes for 'Vidocq' and - probably - 'Brotherhood of the Wolf' 2-disc sets
ahh ... thats a bummer but its logical if you think about it ... why would they provide english subs to a french film that is ported over ...
Jean de florette won't have seng subs either if the french version never did ... :(
'Jean de Florette' does (that's why I listed it) but that's from a different label - Saerom (who English sub their Japanese, Czech and other films), Enter One ('Vidocq' etc) sometimes do ('The Eye') and sometimes don't..
oh yes ... you did list it ... :p :notworthy
Memento Mori and Kids Return are great Korean DVDs.
Heat dts
A warning about Heat ... the DTS soundtrack is on the cropped 1.85:1 version of the 2-disc set.

OK. Already have Heat (R1) anyway.:p
My turn to :notworthy to you Cirrus. Just picked up 'A Short Film About Killing' in the shops - anamorphic and Eng subs. 'A Short Film About Love' was there too.
Dropped 30 quid on '...Killing', 'Ed Wood' SE and the 'JFK' SE
Added some others to the list - forgot about 'Kids Return', 'Hani-Bi' is out too..
Malena - DTS
any idea which version this is? Probably the usual cut version I'd guess? Same as R2/1?
Going by the imdb, the UK/US release was 92 minutes long and cropped from 100mins or is there an even longer version?
I'll check the running time soon - Korean DVD-producers love to splash "no-cut" on the sleeves so there's a good chance..
Nope, it's the Miramax-length one - only 92 minutes
Damn! Shame that. Thanks for checking though.
Added a couple more - The Mission, 1492 and Charade
Cirrus - so the Tarkovsky ports (barring 'Solaris') seem fine? are all the extras English subbed too?
This is great news, I might pick up 'Stalker' but I don't know if it includes the original audio track or just the 'sacrilegious' 5.1 mix..
I think I read somewhere that the korean Stalker only has the 5.1 mix and not the mono track which seems to be available only on the Artificial Eye R2 version.
The extras are subbed just like the original Ruscico releases.
The only main difference between Spectrum and ruscico I can see is that the spectrum version has far less sub choices. Also the Spectrum releases seems to have faulty chapter selections where if you were to choose a scene it would take you straight back to the main menu rather than the main feature.
Just found 'As Tears Go By' (I think) going under the English name of 'Fatal Checkout' - it stars Maggie Cheung :norty:, Andy Lau and Jacky Cheung.. it took a bit of searching to match it - Wong Kar-Wai is listed as the director on the DVD-site but I wasn't sure if it was just another film that he wrote (as with 'Intellectual Trio').
There's a poor release of 'Fallen Angels' from Daum, it's about 3 years old, I wish they'd update it.
The anamorphic Caligula (which has the hardcore stuff in it) is only £3 at DVDoo.
Should add that a large number of these discs are not region-coded, making them an option for people who want US-style discs/early releases but have only R2/4 capable players.
Newest addition 'The Crow - DTS' Special Edition is an example..
Does anyone know what the Korean release of Klimov's Agonia is like - presumably it is a port from the Ruscico? It's US $19 at krdvd (not that I want to order it from them!), which is a lot less than the $35 odd from Ruscico.
Yes, the Korean DVD sleeve has the usual Ruscico markings so it should be almost identical.
Great idea!
I recently got hold of "Chungking Express" which appears to be a direct port of the Region 1 version complete with Quentin Tarantino.
"The Bride With White Hair" also seems to be a port of the Region 1 complete with the director's commentary.
On the yesasia site I noticed a Korean version of "Comrades: Almost A Love Story", although it is listed as only having Korean subs. I do wonder if the transfer is any improvement over the HK version.
Added a few of the above-mentioned titles to the first post.
Also mean to pick up the new release of Nixon from Daum - it's the director's cut, 2-discs, commentaries, anamorphic and DTS - looking forward to watching this for the first time in 6 years...
how do the Korean Dario Argento DVDs (Suspiria and Opera) compare with their R1 and R2 counterparts?
Both the Argentos have DTS soundtracks and the same transfers as the Anchor Bay R1s. Suspiria is two discs, a documentary about the film is on the second - it's lacking the Argento documentary that the R2 release is reported to have.
I've just ordered Korean versions of the movies below, I'll let you lnow what they are like when I get them.
(Swept Away)
(The Bicycle Thief)
(High Noon)
(The Umbrellas of Cherbourg)
(Plein Soleil)
(Take the money and run)
(Rebecca(2 Disc))
(Blood Simple)
(Days Of Being Wild)
8 1/2 (2disc) - Criterion port
(2disc) (Leon Theatrical Version & Director`s Cut SE)

ok, so they are just direct R1 ports, nothing lost, nothing added?

Leon Special Edition
We were glad to see this title bring many Finlanders to our site. It moved up
our chart to #2 thanks to Finlanders. We assume that the word has gotten
around somewhere over the Finish dvd community sites. Thank you!
:D
Has Leon come yet Kin?
Yes one DVD-5 disc and one DVD-9 disc.
DD5.1
2.35:1 Anamorphic and barebones apart from trailer, music video and isolated score.
Leon - Watched both the DVD-5 Disc and the DVD-9 disc and straight away I noticed a diffence between the colours and black levels. Sticking feature films on a DVD-5 disc really ruins the presentation of the film although by itself it looks fine.
Plein Soleil - port of a miramax release. Interesting movie when compared with the Talented Mr. Ripley (Which I think is better), the french/italian version is more a straight thriller and doesn't have any of the complexities of characters displayed in the remake. Alain Delon is better looking though.
the Unbrellas Of Cherbourg - A port of the fox lorber edition along with the horizontal cropping. OK first off no where did I read this was a musical because if I did I wouldn't have bought it. However, now that I've watched it I think's its simplicity and catchy main tune is wonderful and I'm glad I bought it.
High Noon - Another port of a US release but not the SE version. First time I've seen this film and it stands up against the ravages of time excellently. Spotted about half a dozen scenes lifted from this movie in other westerns and yet it still remains compulsive and fresh in outlook despite its 50+ yrs. Recommended.
Blood Simple - American port with commentary (anchor Bay?) - Early crime thriller by the Coens, flashes of their style here and there but its obvious that they were learning ... still better than a whole lotta crime thrillers by directors twice their age at the time.

There are some great titles there, but how do I know how to order without learning Korean.
Can anyone give me some handy hints?
Yep, I can put a copy of the Nixon 2-disc set in the basket at DVD.co.kr, but can't fathom out what shipping option to choose, and therefore the costs involved. Heaven only knows what comes next.
Shipping for the UK is GBP6.70 for 0.5kg
Select the first 3 region next to the truck (the first is normal airmail the second 3 is express).
Then press the 3rd yellow button.
On the second page fill in your Name and address.
For part 3 select the 2nd option and press next.
Several online suppliers will sell them - I can't be much help in that department.

Also mean to pick up the new release of Nixon from Daum - it's the director's cut, 2-discs, commentaries, anamorphic and DTS - looking forward to watching this for the first time in 6 years...
Can anyone tell me where I can order this disc as Yesasia.com don't stock it as yet. :(

Any chance of some caps and how does it compare to the R1 DVD?
Hunter. :)

Yep, I can put a copy of the Nixon 2-disc set in the basket at DVD.co.kr, but can't fathom out what shipping option to choose, and therefore the costs involved. Heaven only knows what comes next.
