Has Anyone Seen Avalon?
Question:

I enjoyed it, but what's the ending all about? IS there a DVD release with English subtitles available?

Answers:

The Japanese DVD has English subtitles. Available in 2 sets, one a super-duper deluxe set has DTS and loads of extras, though you may have trouble finding it - the standard version doesn't have DTS.

Answers:

You'd be better off going for the Korean release of Avalon - much cheaper and from what I have heard is a port of the R2 Japanese disk. (it has DTS and english subtitles :) )

Unbelivably boring and amateurish. Saw it at the cinema and it was the first film in years I walked out of.

Answers:

I wouldn't call it amateurish at all it actually looks stunning and atmospheric. However, I too found it very slow and boring but I also found ghost in the shell slow and boring too mainly because I couldn't relate to any of the characters in both movies.
I'm also not a big fan of Akira for the same reasons too many cold characters ...

I remember it on the Spectrum..

I really liked it - But, having said that, I had heard through the grapevine that it was dissapointing. I think lower expectations led to higher enjoyment.
Yes, it's very slow, and yes, other films have tackled the same themes better, but I still enjoyed this piece. It's quite a beautiful film, and the few action scenes are superb.
I've got it on R3 DVD - no extras, but great picture and sound. Certainly not one for a beer and curry night, though.

I certainly wouldn't call it 'amateurish' either!!...i think it maybe tries to be too 'clever' in that it's a case of style over substance.
It never quite lived up to my expectations but having said that, i did find it fairly watchable.

i got the HK dvd for about £8 from dddhouse, though the subs do fly by a little too fast occasionally. i enjoyed it but i'm not sure about the ending, maybe trying to be too clever. worth a look for less than a tenner though.

I quite enjoyed it - liked the look, the premise and teh overall style - but I felt really let down by the ending.
Not that I always expect a film to make total sense but I was a total loss to any sort of meaning - it just seemed to end!

Answers:

Yes I have to admit I wasnt quite sure how to interpret the ending
They move over to "class real" (right name ?) that initially looks like it might be just "reality" but then the guy gets killed and the way he dies shows us that its not reality - then later we move over to the church where theres a vision of a child if I remember correctly (who appeared earlier as well I think) - I remember thinking at the time "WTF !"
Must be some web site somewhere that gives the correct interpretation

Is this Anamorphic or is that too much to ask?

Answers:

I wouldn't call it amateurish either.
I would call it very protentous and very dull , very very badly paced film. The films basicly a three page 2000AD future shock strip dragged into a seemingly never ending brown tinted dirge of a woman stareing at her dog. Hopefully it will be the last Japanense Sci fi film filmed in Polish that i have to sit through.
Still the 2 D explosions at the start were cool.

Answers:

i'm pretty sure it wasn't, but i've lent it to a friend so i can't chack.

The HK R3 is a non anamorphic disc. Its also a DVD-5 barebones disc.

I thought it looked like many bad film school graduation films, which try to dazzle with some not terribly impressive "look" but still end up looking incredibly cheap. The director was completely unable to structure any of his individual scenes or the film as a whole. Hence I found the whole thing amateurish.
