What's this film like? cos I really enjoy most of De Niro's films (apart from Rocky & Bullwinkle  ) but this one has never really appealed to me :|

Oooh. I hear FilmFour want to show the rights to That Weird Chinese Movie About Football.
I see King Of Comedy as both DeNiro's and Scorsese's masterpiece. Excellent movie and has an easy place within my personal Top 20. The rewatch value is amazing.
WOW
what an excellent movie !!
i had a smile on my face throughout the whole movie.
pleasantly suprised by De Niro's performance, i dont usually consider him a versatile actor, but his perfomance in this was top notch. He wasnt De Niro at all, he was Rupert Pu(m)pkin !!!
im no doubt picking up the DVD. I can sense the rewatch value already, it wasnt overlong and had excellent pacing.
Well I too decided to watch it & was charmed by De Niro's performance. He played Pupkin really well & made u both feel for him & yet wonder why he is so mental lol :D . The bit where his Mom kept shouting at him while he was recording his demo tape was funny as hell
i just loved the bit where he talking to Jerry in the restaurant / his room where he is rehearsing, just for the acting.
Im sure there's one or two Rupert Pumpkins on this forum.:D

Only about one of the best De-Niro/Scorsese films ever (bar Goodfellas/Casino).
Didn't do too well at the box office, supposedly because people didn't like De-Niro's character, but that's the whole point, you're not supposed to like him. Underneath it's quite a funny film.
It's a big shame their promises for this DVD were broken and we lost out on some nice stuff like commentaries.

It's hilarious, but it's emphatically not a comedy in the traditional sense - and I think it had a built-in problem in terms of marketing: if you go to see something called The King of Comedy with Jerry Lewis, you expect something rather different!
Then again, I was surprised at how vitriolic some of the US reviews were - especially Pauline Kael's (I usually pick this review as an example of how you can still admire someone's writing while disagreeing passionately with the argument). It did significantly better, both critically and commercially, in Europe - in fact, it was the first Scorsese film I ever saw, and it blew me away.

Given how dire Robert De Niro's commentaries are, are we really missing out that much? I've also got the impression that Scorsese wasn't too happy with the finished film - though this may have been distortion introduced by American interviewers still peddling the "disaster" angle (which still pops up to this day).
