They said people were talking about him getting nominated.The film was very big in the US and his performance received rave reviews and surprised alot of critics.

yeah, but he's still an ars****e.
8mile is a pretty good film, but the fact is.. theres not much in the way of a story (white guy rapper battles against prejudice blah blah) and eminem wont be nominated for an oscar, just for the same reason that if sly stallone was in a movie about an italian actor who wasn't very good, he wouldn't be either. ;)
eminem simply plays himself, theres not many big acting scenes, most of the time he's just quiet except for the battles (Freestyles) which are prewritten so obviously will sound good. also, the one scene he takes his hat off i see why he has dyed his hair that ridiculous bright-yellow he seems to enjoy..
ok, it kinda looks like im slating thef ilm, im simply saying its watchable, but its no work of genius. the direction is pretty good and its a pretty dark movie that moves fairly slowly considering its length (less than 2 hours). i'd probably watch it again, but i'm not going to pay to see it in the cinema.
theres talk of a sequel, and thats never a good thing. unless a sequel is planned from the beginning, they usually suck.
I didn't mean I didn't believe anyone had heard he was tipped for an oscar. I just meant that such an outrage would make me turn my back on the film industry:shocker:

I'm not a fan because I don't like Rap, however that doesn't mean I am Anti-Eminem.
I've heard all his hit songs of course because they are always on the radio, someone said he's a lyrical genius earlier which is a load of arse really, but what he sings about does make a lot of sense.
I'll probably go and see 8-mile and I won't be prejudice against him.
That being said he does come across as a bit of a **** sometimes, starting fights then hiding behind his wall of body guards and having a go at Moby for no apparent reason.

I think he's talented, he's written some catchy singles, the lyrics are often witty and the promo for Without Me is as good a music video as I've ever seen. Plus Curtis Hanson is on a roll. The Oscar talk is just talk though, realistically he doesn't have a hope of being nominated. He's a contraversial, foul-mouthed rapper playing himself and the Academy is made up of ageing fuddy duddies with a notorious bias against pop stars. If Madonna wasn't nominated for Evita or Courtney Love for The People Versus Larry Flynt, Eminem has no hope whatsoever. He's a shoo-in at the MTV awards though.

The Oscar talk came out of thin air before the film had even been seen rather than straight from the horses mouth. Eminem is a whizz at self promotion which is what the Oscar talk is.
His perfomance surprised alot of critics but that doesnt actually mean anyone was so impressed that he should be up for an Oscar. Rather, movie's which are made purely to launch a pop star into the film medium are nearly always terrible (Mariah Carey being an example) but 8 mile isnt. It's a reasonable effort which turned out better than anyone was expecting. Personally I'd put this down to the director more so than Eminem's performance because its easy to see how bad 8 Mile could have been in someone else's hands.
There are some preview screenings at UGC cinemas fairly soon.
Check the current issue of Empire for the full details.

My guess is that hes had some creative imput into the story.

Fact is he's Mr Dre's moneymaking bitch, so it's in his company's interest to keep the image afloat. Vanilla Ice had a load of 'suits' running the show for him so was only a matter of time before he got exposed. Too much money at stake for them to go and ruin it now with Eminem, hence the film et.al... The bubble will burst so it's a 'rake in the cash while you can' typa thing... ;)
