Manhunter vs Red Dragon as the definitve prequel??? Sorted- PLEASE CLOSE
Question:

Never seen Manhunter but heard it's a cult classic- but let's be honest not all people think it's all that. In fact, I'm waiting for Red Dragon to be released on DVD as most reviews say Manhunter was good for it's time but now appears outdated.... and that Red Dragon is more entertaining at the end of the day. So should I sell it sealed or should I watch it (then if I think it's crap it'll be worth less...)

If you don't watch it, you will never know what the film is like and whether you will enjoy it more or less the Red Dragon.
The answer is obvious... watch the film.

Have you watched it? What d'you think?

Personally I'd rate it as being better than Red Dragon. For starters, the directors: Michael Mann vs Brett Ratner - not much of a competition.
The big difference for me is that in Manhunter, Will Graham comes across as being genuinely able to see into the mind of a mass murderer. Whereas in Red Dragon, he just comes across as a man of average intelligence who just seems to get lucky.
That said, Manhunter is very 80s!

Hmmm... Rush Hour 2 was tops and Family Man was quite good I thought. As for the 80s thing- if it's as nostalgic as GTA Vice City, I might enjoy it! Tell me this- I think Silence of the Lambs was cool- is Manhunter better?

Yes, I thought it was fantastic. The soundtrack (being Mann) is a bit dated now. I got it from Choices Direct for £6 recently.
I can't comment on Red Dragon as I have not seen it.

Have said it many times in other threads so I'm not going to repeat myself and bore everyone, but Manhunter is a bona fide classic of its time. Red Dragon is simply a popcorn flick no more no less. If you want to be challenged and genuinely disturbed by a movie stick with MH. If stock Hollywood popcorn fluff is more your taste stick with RD. If you don't even watch MH though you will have missed out.
Oh and the MH 80's thing. Its been said before by other people that the film was made in the 80's, is set in the 80's and hence looks and feels like the 80's. Its an invalid criticism to say 'its a bit 80's'. Thats how its supposed to be. Its a bit like criticising Schindler's List for looking dated because its set in the 1940's.

Why not just rent Manhunter or wait for another TV showing

Watched a few scenes from MH- quite disturbing. Mad music! But I must admit, I can only see Hannibal Lecter played by Anthony Hopkins which gives the whole story it's own charm. Yes Hanniba was a joke but most entertaining. I think I'm gonna prefer Red Dragon so if anyone wants to buy my copy of MH, it's on the classifieds thread.
Thanks for everyone's opinions! ;)

Sorry to see your judgement is clouded by an actor

You opened it but only watched a few scenes?! Good god man...

I can understand that. Manhunter is stylistically hard to take for some of us. Personally I couldn't stand it, though I've since discovered that I am just not a fan of Mann at all.
