Question:
This month's TF end of year review has a rather amusing collection of Mr Ross' quotes from the past year...
"Ford deserves an Oscar nomination" K-19
"Spectacular! Glorious! Brilliant! My favourite action adventure of all time! The Scorpion King"
"This is my favourite action adventure of all time!" xXx
"SEE IT,SEE IT, SEE IT!" Signs
"The best British movie of the year!" About A Boy
"If you see only one film this year make it Vanilla Sky" Guess!
:D
genius!
This chap should be knighted for his services to the movie industry.
Very funny but this only confirms my opinion that magazines like the above simply lurk the forums for contents for their magazine when they should be getting off there asses and giving film fans something more exclusive.
It was interesting that when the Scooby Doo is pants threads were doing the rounds packed with amusing comments regarding Fred Jr's acting talent's, the following months HotDog magazine happened to contain 2 grand articles on Scooby Doo being pants with some amusing comments regarding Fred Jr's acting talents.
Many of the people here can do there job better than them & they know it.
Jimmyboy-I think you've got a very valid point there!
Speaking about Total Film did you see what there Film of the Year was
Donnie Darko:clap:
Although it's a good film you can't really say it's the film of the year when there's still a good month to go, surely a demonic rabbit is no match for a talking tree in LOTR:TTT
the film of the year/review of the year things always miss out a few releases for the very end of the year and the two towers ruled itsef out by not having press screenings before the mag went to print. funninly enough i was trying to explain the genius of donnie darko to my mum just this afternoon telling her it was film of the year, the i flicked through total film and what did i find, proof!
the conversation was sparked by me bursting out aughing at the making of on splinter cell. she didn't understand what was so funny about michael ironside saying
''i think all human behaviour can be put in two categories. fear and love.'':D

LMAO
The man is genius.:D
Empire have done a very similar thing this month. The man is a god
also to reinforce the theory that total film get all their ideas from the forums i noticed a number of the dvd reviews had no score for the extras as the disc wasn't available at time of press. looks like all all the press empire and hotdog have been getting for making up reviews has made them total film a bit nervy.
Roger Ebert once coined a term for critics whose chief aim in life is to be quoted on as many film posters as possible - he called them "quote whores". Not that this has anything to do with Paul Ross. Oh no.
It's like poetry - the man is a wasted talent.
He is right about K-19 and Vanilla Sky :|

law of averages, if he calls everything a masterpiece he has to be right some of the time, and on ever film poster in the land. maybe this cross mag expose will get him sacked, or at least make film companies less likely to put a news of the world quote on the poster as everyone now knows the truth

er, or more than likely make them use his "quotes" even more, as perverse as that sounds!
From the exposure in the Empire & Total Film features (and having them reprinted here too!), just how many people will have those film titles in their heads when they are next in HMV etc and are looking for discs as Xmas pressies! (3 of those titles are on UK dvd by xmas)
Anyone would think that the film companies advertisers' are using a very clever "gimmick" to get their product titles into out little brains in the most sneeky, cynical way possible.
Or maybe the journos at said mags are in fact so rubbish that they have nothing better to write about! God-forbid they do a similar feature highlighting their own brown-nosing "reviews" that are pre-factored into the advertising budget of the movie based on the mag's circulation figures!
As for faking "reviews", the leader of the pack is the sham-rag that is DVDReview, whose editor has now stopped responding to my emails because he knows damn well that his publication never even watches half of what they "review".
So Donnie Darko was Total Film's best film of the year. Living abroad and not being able to buy the magazines before a week or two, can someone tell me what were Empire's and Hotdog's top films of the year?
Thanks.
One thing I can never understand is why film magazines don't wait 'till the end of the year before releasing their film of the year list's.
The case in point being the LOTR trilogy, all three will be released in December,
thus not being included in the lists!!
(Though Donnie Darko is my film of the year....until December?)

Empire's was;
1. Minority Report
2.Road To Peredition
3.Mullhollamd Dr.
4.Spider-Man
5.AOTC (:shocker: )
6.Insommnia
7.Donnie darko
8.Oceans 11
9.Talk To Her
10.Lantana
Somebody post the Paul Ross pics.... the "I have no use" one. They make me laugh every time, yet I never save them to my hard drive!

Doesn't that just mean that TTT will be included in next years best films? I can't believe they'd just ignore a months worth of films, mind you, it would seem sensible to have the best films of year early next year, i guess maybe "The best films of this year" sells better than "Last years best films!"
Has anyone else got this month's total film? There is a letter in it from said Mr Ross. He sounded annoyed.
Can I re-type it here copyright wise (without the swearing) ?
Let's all remember that this is the man who referred to Channel Four's "The Book Group" as "like a Scottish David Lynch film". If anyone understands that then please let the rest of us know.
Mike.
BlueDwarf, I'm very interested in hearing this so please go ahead! As long as you give the correct source, and use EDITED instead of swearing, then surely it should be ok...?
Anyways, back to the lesser talented Ross brother, he has to go. Seriously. The man should be sacked. In his review of "Love Liza" he basically said in these same degrading terms, that Phillip Seymour Hoffman, i!s a fat sweaty waste of space who is only rated because he appears in over long "art-house" movies which are jsut all boring" (Note. This has been paraphrased as I only read the review, I hate the Sun or is it NOTW?!") Anyways...WHAT!? Phillip Seymour Hoffman IS one of his generation's finest actors! Magnolia? Hello Paul Ross, try and actually sit through a DECENT FILM! Although I haven't seen Love Liza, I can pretty much guess the thesp does what he does best anyways!

Presumably because lots of the films from that year are released in time for christmas shoppers and the magazine wants as much advertising revue from the relevant companies as possible.
He calls someone a "naive Caledonian correspondent",
says "cinamatic ennui", oh and "duck you very much"
.
Come on Blue Dwarf, lets see Mr Ross's letter.
I got Total Film yesterday and his letter was absolutely hilarious! Whatever happened to the campaign to get him kicked off Play?

:suspect:
Having just read the aforementioned pathetic epistolary diatribe, I'm sincerely hoping that someone will resurrect the petition to kick him off play.com (although I did get one or 2 cheap DVDs thanks to him - what will happen if they do terminate his contract?).

I can (sort of) vouch for that comment. I used to work for a computer magazine publishing company. I wont say which one :), but a lot of reviews, especially books, it was clear from the review they never bothered to read them...simply just the 'back cover synopsis'
I guess this is a well known 'art' throughout the publishing industry.

Nice one Paul, you've won even more respect now. Now sit back, present Bid Up TV and let your brother do the talking, you jerk.
Its the fact he's so desperately trying to come off as highly articulate which makes it even more funny than it should be.
I just read the letter in the copy picked up today - hilarious stuff. I now take Ross seriously as a reviewer.
ahhh the gurning fool!
so he stands by his comments that 'the scorpion king' makes the mummy trilogy better than the indiana jones trilogy?
and as for xXx being his favourite action adventure of all time
lol
