How do you listen to your mono/stereo movies?
Question:

It's always a shame to not utilize your spanking surround sound set-up when watching DVDs, so it's particularly frustrating when you get a stereo or mono movie that you are dying to get lost in (i.e. a couple of my recent favourites Don't Look Now, Silent Running and all my Woody Allens).
So, how do you watch? I struggle to get it right and sometimes end up just listening through the TV (which bothers me). My Yamaha Amp has a standard stereo through the left and right speakers option which is OK but dialogue can get lost due to the distance of the speakers (especially when talking over music). The other option is strange as it's through all 5 speakers (it's called 5 channel stereo i think) but it sorta works, in fact it works best with CDs.
Generally though, i just can't get it right, especially with Mono movies!

If it's mono or plain stereo, I usually listen through the TV - it's far less fiddly (one less remote control, for instance) and there's no appreciable difference in sound.
Then again, I'm perfectly capable of "getting lost in" a film with no soundtrack at all - it depends on the film, not on how many speakers it uses!

It's just so easy to raise ones standards when you are used to modern films completely enveloping you in sound! We are already so used to the quality of DVD images that watching a video can be a distracting experience. Watching Manhattan last night was slightly frustrating because i wanted the Gershwin soundtrack to boom out in full glorious Dolby surround, but instead it sort of distorted because i had the volume up loud so i could hear the dialogue better.
Anyway, like i said, maybe my standards have been raised so much that i don't know when i've got it good! I used to be over-the-moon at watching some of the films i mentioned when they were on TV, pan n' scanned, with the sound dribbling out of my poxy portable TV speaker!

Is this a trick question..?
Mono - through the centre speaker..
Stereo - through the front pair..

Answers:

Plain stereo or mono tracks, I prefer to use the 'Direct Mode' on my Marantz amp, which is normally used for CD playback. Beefier sounds too. Sometimes trying to get full surround just doesn't sound right.
My 1/50 of a £

Just leave PLII on all the time, so stereo gets some rear amibience, mono collapses to just the front center.

Wrong answer.
It's simply not technical enough :dork:
