*Heads Up* The Conversation tonight BBC2 1:10am
Question:

ive heard this is one of Francis Ford Coppola's best.
looking forward to watching it for the first time.
also has the amazing Gene Hackman.
and comments on the film appreciated.

Answers:

This film is indeed one of the greatest ever made. It ranks in the top films of it's generation and is certainly Coppola's unrecognised masterpiece.
Be aware that the film is very introverted and therefore can be thought of as slow. This could not be more wrong. It is achingly tense. Gene Hackman is a revelation and his lonley performance is one of the finest pieces of character acting around. Watch out for several key scenes that are simply outstanding.
My only niggle with the movie is that the production design has dated quite significantly. It looks VERY seventies. I suppose that this is part of it's charm though. It looks as dated as The French Connection but loses none of the power.
I can't recommend this highly enough. If you miss this showing you might regret it for a long, long time.
The ending, and i mean the very last 3 minutes, is worth the running time alone.
Miss this at your peril.

Excellent.. I've been keeping an eye out for this getting a showing on telly.. thanks for the heads up!

Gripping for the most part but it almost dies on it's feet during the 'party' at the workshop in the mid-section & never really recovers despite a strong final act.
Worth a look though if only for the superb performance by Hackman.

Nearly missed this thanks, anyone have the videoplus number at hand ?
Cheers.

Excellent film - superb performance from Gene Hackman.

I had to laugh, reading the "Films" section in the Daily Express guide The Conversation for 2 stars out of 5
Robin Hood & The Prince Of Thieves got 5 :p

If any of you missed it, you shouldn't worry - the R1 DVD is excellent.
The picture quality is vastly superior to what I've seen of the film on TV, and the extras are really interesting - commentaries by Coppola and Walter Murch (editor). There's also a short featurette that completely is made up from footage of Coppola filming and directing on set.
There can't have been many directors that had such a strong roll as this: Godfather, Conversation, Godfather part II.

I agree it does look of its time but I suppose this is very hard to avoid making any film. Jeez Star Wars looks dated but is set in the future!
I think the charm you speak of is very much to do with the paranoia of the times (1970s). The post-Watergate era is more concerned with enemies within than without. Surveillance technology became a real threat to privacy. This film captures such paranoia perfectly - the score (by Dave Grusin?) is also an essential part of the isolated paranoia experienced by Harry Caul.
Other films which create a similar sense of the times include Parallax View (Warren Beatty) and 3 days of the Condor (Redford).
BTW The soundtrack is available!

the score is by david shire (who also did the score for the taking of pelham 123). its availible from www.intrada.com & is well worth picking up (remastered/ extended cues/ sleevenotes from shire & coppola etc...). top stuff, if your a fan of the film or just films scores in general.

Pretty good roll for John Cazale too
The Godfather
The Conversation
The Godfather Part II
Dog Day Afternoon
The Deer Hunter
It's a shame he died before his time.

Never seen The Conversation and forget to set the Tivo up to record it but it managed to do it for me as it thought I might be interested in it, sometimes the Tivo does surprise me
