Question:
i was reading over at HTF and they said the new R1 is P&S and english language only !!!
i dont know what to do, should i go for the R3s ?
but ive heard the Japanese DVDs have better pic quality, and im after the best. But arent the Jap DVDs like £40 each ?
I got my Totoro from DDHouse and it was £15.70ish delivered....
DDDHouse deal with Region 3..
Im pretty sure the HK R3's were remastered and now they're more or less identical to the Japanese versions in regards to the main feature.
There's an R1 SE planed in 2004 if you can wait, otherwise the HK R3 is probably the best way to go.
Someone else will know more about the HK release than me.
The Hong Kong R3 is rather fine and the price won't hurt your pocket. (While your shopping at DDDHouse or HiViZone) get some of Miyazaki's other classics like Spirited Away, Porco Roso, Kiki's....
... and Laputa: Castle in the Sky and Whisper of the Heart, just released. The R3's are all excellent, and even the initial, pre-remastered Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service aren't that bad. I tend to use Coolashop, but keep to two discs per order to dodge customs.
Is the R3 Porco Rosso disc anamorphic and is the picture quality any good?

Yes, and yes! It was the first of the R3 Ghiblis to have a dual-layered disc from the off... a great movie, too.
I was also rather disappointed to see that the US disc is being marketed as a film for children. The cover also looks absolutely awful.
I have the old R3 disc, which isn't bad, but I'm thinking about upgrading it to the Japanese R2 version. I now buy all my Miyazaki discs from Japan via Dave's excellent co-buy system.
Is the My Neighbour DVD from DDDHouse the special edition, Wolfman?
Yeah all the Totoro's and Kiki's are DVD 9 and if you send another email to dddhouse they will confirm it for you before you buy.
The back cover of my copies just say DVD-9 on them whereas before they use to say DVD-5 and DVD-9.
I think they are excellent quality although direct comparisons with the japanese version may show a little edge enhancement but for half the price I'm more than happy to reduce the contrast levels on my viewing system to compensate.
Also remember that the R3 Totoro has real subtitles while the Japanese disc has dubtitles (the R2Jap has an English dub, though).
How many should I order in 1 go? I want
Laputa
Kiki's delivery service
Mu neighbour Totoro
Spirted away
Should I spilt it into 2 different orders? will that get past customs?
I think coolashop are a tad cheaper than dddhouse ... you can order two from each.
I would suggest ordering Totoro and kiki from dddhouse as they have already said all their stock are DVD-9 ones.
What about Laputa & Spirited Away?
looks like its R3 all the way !!!

Check the coolashop prices. I think its HK$135 plus HK$30 P+P.
The Hong Kong DVD Promotional Team are out in force :D
If you can pay via Paypal then www.852star.com are the cheapest (not by much, but you can order singularly to guarantee zero customs worries) for Whisper of the Heart and Laputa.
Went for Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery Service, as I never seen either of them, will get Totoro another time.

Er... Totoro is a children's film. I have the US videotape and despite not being widescreen, and being dubbed into English, it is an amazing and entertaining kids film which all ages can enjoy.
Personally I think the old Fox dub is excellent - a shame they haven't managed to produce a proper dual language disc like the Japanese release.
remember folks - if you buy the R3s you don't get an English soundtrack and then you can't convince your kids of the genius of Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli

Actually, my two and four year olds seem to cope well with Totoro without the English dub. Both seem to be committed fans (four-year old likes Mei, the two year old likes the nekobus).
But, it does help if Dad is there to read out the gist of the sub-titles:), and the dialogue is not massively important to the storytelling. Miyazaki's use of expression and gesture helps the audience cross the language barrier quite beautifully.
Having said that, the R1 will be available for under a tenner from some sites, so I am giving serious thought to getting the Fox to go with the R3.

Yup its a 2 disc set.
Although it should be noted that only the film has english subs. The second disk which has a storyboard/film version is not subbed to English....
There are a few trailers as well...but only the film is watchable really....
From my experience films take about a week to arrive from DDDHouse ....
im thinking of getting Totoro and Kiki from DDDhouse, but that would cost about £26 delivered right ?
what they like with customs ?

Why not just shell out a few more quid and get the R2, rather than buying both R1 and R3? Then you have the best of all the available versions, including an English dub?

Okay - I'll bite - is there a search engine where I can find the cheapest site for a R2 version of Totoro?

I didn't know there is a R2 version?
oh, the Jap R2 version? cost to much i reckon, reading subtitles don't bother me, I rather read subtitles then to hear awful dubs.

Not when you was 6 ...
Well there are only 3 places really where you order Jap r2 DVDs
Amotokyo
cdjapan
amazon.co.jp
About £27 shipped from amazon.co.jp - then there are possible customs charges, though I've escaped so far... ;)
Remember that the R2Jap Totoro, while it has an English dub also has dubtitles, not literal subtitles.
The R3 release of Totoro looses the dub, but has ok subtitles.
It does have Cantonese dubs though, so anyone who can understand that is in luck.
All dubs are crappy no matter what language their in and the fact I can understand cantonese is annoying because the DD5.1 soundtracks are actually OK because they expand the sound a bit more.
DD2.0 sounds fine but DD5.1 is better.
Non-cantonese speakers can use the DD5.1 soundtracks and be none the wiser.
The DTS soundtrack on Laputa is good although the rears are hardly used.
