Nice review Julian.
This is one of my most anticipated purchases in December, in fact it is my only MUST buy

Thanks, 8-]
If it wasn't for the fact that I've got a copy, it would have been my most anticipated release between now and the end of the year, too!

Julian
Enjoyed the review. Looking forward to this one.

Julian - Nice review & a DVD I've been looking forward to ...
Not so sure about the blue text you use though - gave me a right headache (or was that the plan!) :D

Minority Report is unarguably one of the best science fiction movies made in the last couple of decades
Just wondering what else you felt are the best sci-fi's of the last couple of decades ???
I ask since i love sci-fi movies and didn't think this was as good as you. Not looking for an argument or flame war just wondering what type of sci-fi movies make you tick :)

I would put it in my top sci-fi films as well. To put this comment into context, I do not enjoy watching Tom Cruise, and certainly don't own any of his films in my DVD collection. I didn't particularly want to see it at the flix but went and changed my opinion after seeing it.
A great film, good plot, funny (those eyeballs rolling down the hallway :)), looking forward to this coming through in the next couple of weeks.

Here's my completely fascinating list of great SF movies, for anyone who's interested.
1984 (1954 and 1984 versions)
Alien / Aliens / Alien³
AI - Artificial Intelligence
Back to the Future and Back to the Future - Part II
Beneath the Planet of the Apes
Blade Runner
Brazil
Bride of Frankenstein
Dark City
The Day the Earth Stood Still
The First Men in the Moon
Forbidden Planet
The Fly (1986)
Frankenstein (1931)
The Invisible Man (1933)
Jurassic Park and sequels
The Matrix
Men in Black
Minority Report
Planet of the Apes
The Quatermass Experiment
Quatermass II
Quatermass and the Pit
Robocop
The Star Wars Trilogy
Starship Troopers
The Thing (1982)
This Island Earth
Time After Time
The Time Machine (1960)
Twelve Monkeys
There's probably a few that I've forgotten, or that I've left out because they're more fantasy or horror than SF, but you get the picture. I'm actually much keener on SF TV than SF movies.

Farell is the 'token villain'?
Eh? He clearly isn't a villain at all, and the film has a real one alright as is revealed near the end.

Answers:

The audience is clearly meant to identify Farrell as a villain - he's opposed to Cruise's character (the hero), and wants to wreck his career. Ultimately it's revealed that he's right: the Precrime process is fundamentally flawed, and the true villain is revealed, as you say. You could argue that Cruise isn't a fit person to be running the operation, either. The film has some appealing ambiguities. Even Von Sydow's character believes that he's acting from the best motives. Anyway, that's why I referred to Farrell as the "token villain" and not simply "the villain"!

Answers:

it was just the way you had that sentence it made it seem like Farell was the *only* villain, and a token one at that.

Answers:

But if u said there were other villains, it would ruin that great twist about Sydow! that last half hour rocks beyond imagination!

Mmmm. Fair point.

Would that be the twist thats almost a shot for shot remaking of LA Confidential?

Very true. Or indeed...
The twist that's nicked from Cruise's previous 'Mission Impossible' (i.e. his friend and mentor turns out to be the real bad guy, not the person who was against him for most of the film)?

How do you do those fantastically clever spoiler tags?
Oh, as easy as that! Sorry - as you were! :smokin:

Answers:

and how do use spoiler tags properly ?
you've just revealed spoilers for Mission Impossible and LA Confidential without warning

am i right in saying that the R2 has DTS and the R1 hasnt?

Nice review Julian. I've been looking forward to this one for a while since I missed it at the cinema and I was pleasantly surprised to find it arrive in the post today (thanks Blackstar).
Thoroughly enjoyed it and I agree that the transfer is top notch, as is the 5.1 soundtrack (no DTS here). Nice to see Spielberg shooting in 2.35:1 again after a long period of using the 1.85:1 ratio - can't remember what his last film shot in 2.35 was, maybe 'Hook' or 'Last Crusade'?
I do take the earlier comments about certain plot points being similar to other films, but I didn't see them coming and they didn't spoil my enjoyment of the movie.
All in all I thought Spielberg and his cast & crew were on top form here.

R1 has DTS as well.

Answers:

R2 and R1 are meant to be the same - except for the PAL/NTSC and the 2 week difference in release date

Personally, I thought the twist was incredibly telegraphed. However, the film is worth a second or third watch for all the background stuff i.e. the 'futuristic' touches to round out the world of the film. Loved the cereal packets.

Answers:

Just watched this. I found it rather dull to be honest. I'd been anticipating a superb watch and was sorely disappointed.

Answers:

I watched this last night and was a little disappointed to be honest. It's a fairly unimaginative whodunnit and it's not hard to work out who the Bad Guy is. There are a few action sequences but they feel kind of tacked on. It also doesn't help that Cruise lacks empathy so really don't feel sorry for him. I'd give it a 6/10. :|
