Question:
Having watched this film yesterday, I can honestly say that it is an animated masterpiece. There has never been an animated film that has moved me in such a way and that has created a feeling of closenness to the central characters.
If you haven't seen it, then please do yourself a favour and watch this cinematic masterpiece told in breathtaking animation and with a simply haunting theme.
What really amazes me about this film is the sense of feeling for the main characters. I have never felt this way before or never so intensely. I have to say that it made me cry (the first time for an animated film).
It's simply brilliant and created by Hayao Miyazki's colleague, I believe, which shows the class of animators behind it.
Anyway, I'm going to watch Laputa:Castle in the sky next. It can only get better.:)
I whole-heartedly agree with everything you just said. It made me blubber like a big girl's blouse, make no mistake. GOTF is a classic piece of film-making, animated or otherwise. Simply stunning.
If you haven't watched this because you're not a fan of anime, I strongly suggest you go against your urges and give it a go. You will not be disappointed. :notworthy
If you're on anti-depressants or of equally low ebb do not watch this film... unless you have Totoro to watch on hand!
is it better to watch it with original language and subtitles or dubbed?
And if you don't have it, you can always go and enter the DVD Times competition to win a copy (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?html=y&id=fireflies.html)
I always prefer to watch in the original language, but the dub isn't too bad at all!
I was also moved to near blubberdom by this film. Very moving and beautiful to look at.
Pfft, what a bunch of wusses :p :D

If the film doesn't move you, then nothing will. I just could not help myself but feel sympathy for the characters. It's a film that everyone should be able to relate to.
what are the answers to the competition questions?
it's worth a try ;)
Oh, I'm pretty sure the answers can all be found in my review of the DVD ;p

Whilst i did enjoy (if that's right word for it) Grave of the fireflys i certainly don't think it's any where near a masterpiece or even 'the best war film ever' But it does give an intresting spin on a side of the war i've not seen in a film before.
