Question:

Is the Die Hard Special Edition (As in the HMV BOGOF sale) cut ? I have had conflicting info regarding this release. Help !

Answers:

I think that it's only Die Hard 3 that has been severly cut in the UK. Parts 1 and 2 are OK.

I have R1 Die Hard 3 - what did they cut out of R2??

Answers:

Lots I think, and wasn't there an issue of them using the airline cut of the film for the iniitial DVD transfer ?

It's horror to have a Die Hard 1 and 2 by Fox, and Bruna Vista messing up part 3 in the UK, they should be shot. I wonder if they'll release another version S.E as there part 3 is luckily a collectors edition.

Answers:

Yeah Die Hard 3 R2 was originally released with the airline version which has virtually no violence!
The later version and the special edition both have noticeable cuts for violence as they are 15 rated.
I would strongly recommend the R1 special edition, which also has DTS!

Does the DVD version of Die Hard with a Vengeance match the one shown on ITV a few weeks back? I was shocked at how much was cut compared to my R1 SE version!

Answers:

A bit more swearing is present in the R2 over the ever-changing ITV version. But not that much more, as loads of naughty words were dubbed over on the UK version of the movie on all formats (that's Disney for you), but I dunno about the UK cinema version. The UK dvd has had a few BBFC trims for violence as we all know, I don't know if ITV cut the violence further. Honestly, the R1 is like a different movie sometimes!! Also, ITV show the movie without any cuts of their own on ITV2, which is odd, yet they still insist on shredding the ITV showings. Go figure.

There is a bit at the end of the film when Bruce gets some bloke on a boat with some chains or something (bear with me here as its a while since I saw my copy) - When I saw this in the cinema it was obviously cut as one minute the bad guy was alive the next he was on the floor dead with Bruce chucking the chain down.
When I got my region 1 DVD I thought - great at last we'll see what went on there - and I remember that the scene played in exactly the same way. What gives? What the bugger went on in that scene that is so dreadful you cant even show it on the US DVD. Does Bruce make the guy eat the chain and then pull it out of his ass dragging his innards out his ringer?

Answers:

The buctchered ITV1 version shown a few weeks back still had the lift scene trimmed (as per the UK SE DVD) as well as the inexplicable cutting of the chain fight in the cargo hold at the end which with the BBFC cut just does not make sense!
Some F Word where dubbed over (but noticeably less so in the latter half of the film) and the bit where Detective Ricky Walsh talks to the "City Engineers Dept" guys and mentions that he worked with them on the World Trade Centre bombing* was very understandably dropped.
(*That is of course the first one)

So what is cut from the R2 Dies Hard SE, is the verison in the Die Hard 1&2 pack the same, is Die Hard 2 cut ?

Answers:

Solidstate - A few seconds of chainwhipping was cut from that scene after the theatrical release. It was a pre-cut by Fox themselves, and it's still in place on the new R1 dvd. A pity.
Jester - AFAIK, the movie portion of Die Hard SE has not been cut in any way. I did hear something about one of the extras - the scene editing workshop - being trimmed, but the BBFC website confirms that it isn't.
Die Hard 2, you'll be glad to hear, is uncut, and has been for a while. All widescreen UK versions of Die Hard 2 are the same as the American cut of the movie, it's the pan&scan UK video (rated 15, not 18) that's been cut. But you're not gonna buy that, so you don't need to worry.
As for the boxset query, I see no reason for Fox to release two different Die Hards when one will do. Go on, just buy the damn thing!! Die Hard in dts... :D

I always thought DH3 R1 was Cut, the scene near the end on the boat, McClain is Whipping that German Bloke with a Chain, you then suddenly see it round is neck, or as it always been like that.

Refer to Niceguygeoff's response to my similar query - by the way thanks Niceguygeoff - I still think my idea of killing the bloke was better though - maybe in Die Hard vs Ichi?

Thanks everyone, will get DH1/2 pack from HMV and probably import DH3 on R1, is this the best way to go or should I just get the R1 Ultimate Pack ?

Also the original Video version was also cut for all the swearing too.
But I notice that Niceguygeoff has already covered that bit :)
