Question:

What sound format is the new 2 disc release (R2)? Want to buy it but dont want to be stuck with inferior 2 channel effort!

Answers:

From what I can remember it's 5.1 & DTS on the Theatrical cut and 2.0 on the Director's cut. I've not got round to watching it yet though.

Answers:

DD5.1 and 6.1 DTS-ES and DD2.0 tracks on Disc one and only the DD2.0 track on Disc 2 (director's cut)...
I for one am glad to see the "inferior" original sound track is on the disc as this is missed off far too many releases...
Does noone else find it ironic that we bitch about any alteration made to the look of a film and boycott studio releases etc.... Yet when a 5.1 mix is there with no original soundtrack option we rarely raise a murmur... And god forbid if a disc doesn't have DD5.1 or DTS then we raise the roof complaining loudly...
So I'll be complaining loudly if the Star Wars Trilody ISN'T altered significantly when it is finally released... how dare GL release it without tinkering with and replacing dodgy sfx!

Answers:

you're so right fawtly, i will be up in arms if there is anything better than crackly mono on the star wars releases. if i hear empire in 6.1 i'm just going to have to shoot somebody.

oh, and slightly more related to the topic at hand, my copy of army of darkness has terrible lip sync problems, the dts track is unwatchable on my pioneer 454. i know pioneer have a long history with lip sync problems but then anchor bay have been having problems of their own of late so has anyone else experienced this?

Just because you have 6(7/8/9) speakers does not mean that they should all be used if they weren't used that way originally...
My TV is 1.78:1 therefore I want all 2.35:1 films cropped so they fit my screen because the studios are wasting some of my TV screen... in exactly the same way as they are wasting some of my speakers if they don't use all 6!
Before anyone says that 5.1 remixes improve the film sound... what if they don't have the original audio elements and have to recreate them... The abomination that is the Terminator soundtrack springs to mind... lovely new sound fx... we don't need those old ones after all!
And yes I would like the SW trilogy to have the original mono/stereo/surround track included... I am not saying we shouldn't have these optional extra 5.1/6.1 tracks but it is annoying if I can't watch the film the way it was originally intended.
If the release has a 5.1 remix then fair enough but if it hasn't got the original track then that is a black mark against it (preferably cleaned up etc)... Whereas if it only has the original track and no 5.1 or DTS track then I probably wouldn't even bat an eyelid. And if it has 5.1 and no DTS I wouldn't give a rats ass (unless it was DTS in theatres) event hough I have DTS setup

just tested it, although my DD and DTS are downmixes, not sure if that will affect it, but i had no lip sync probs whatsoever.

I only say this because as my amplifier can handle DD/DTS, I might as well utilize them! At least its got the commentary track(Which I'll probably never get round to using!)

... Anchor Bay UK release of Withnail & I - 5.1 mix 'leaks' across the soundstage - 2.0 mix is far superior:)
