2nd Prob with DTS - now 6.1 DTE-ES on E.T.(R!1) - where is it?
Question:

1st BoB and now this - what gives??
Set up to watch E.T. - the 2002 version - which claims to have DTS-ES on the disk. Well, chose the DTS track but there ain't no ES bit that's for sure. My amp (Sony 1070) detects DTS-ES in the likes of Cast Away, but on E.T. is only shows 3/2 (i.e. 5.1) and not 3/2+1.
Anyone else spotted this???? Have they screwed up on the R1 release (it's the SE Box with the book etc....)

I don't have this in front of me (it is back at home), but is it DTS-ES Discreet or Matrix? If Matrix then you wont have a +1 as there is no discreet surround center channel. My Poineer only shows the SB on for Discreet, otherwise it shows Matrix od normal DTS.
If it is discreet then I have no idea what the problem is!

I was under the impression that DTS-ES was discrete - wasn't aware that there was a matrixed version! I thought that it was all DD-EX tracks that were matrixed (not having a discrete option).
I presume this is the obvious answer - cheers Kryten - assuming there is a matrixed ES in which case I'll have to set the old 6.1 to "ON" rather that "AUTO".
I tried a search on E.T. but came up with little info - will have a look at some etailers product descriptions.
The new sound mix isn't actually that bad - my experience of re-mastered 5.1 from stereo is not that good. More often than not the rear channels are quite poor - but in E.T's case it's pretty good. Doubt I'm missed too much though from not having the RCentre on - assuming it was the matrixed track that was the prob.

DTS-ES comes in two flavours: DTS-ES Matrix 6.1 and DTS-ES Discrete 6.1. The matrixed version is more common than the discrete variant. ET is DTS-ES Matrix 6.1.
Incidentally, ET isn't a stereo re-mix. Like many films released by the major studios since the 1950s, it was released theatrically with a discrete magnetic soundtrack. In ET's case a 70mm six-track soundtrack: fully discrete left, right, centre, surround and two bass channels. Very close to the 5.1-channel configuration used by the current digital theatrical formats, in fact. 5.1-channel soundtracks on DVD are often simply re-purposed from the stems used for this original soundtrack (although this was not the case with ET).

Thanks Adam - and for the other info!
I have seen some sites with DVD soundtrack specs - anyone have any to hand so that I can browse away?

Luckily now 6.1 Discreet soundtracks are becoming more common and there are some superb examples around (Blade 2, LOTR Extended etc).
I tend to leave my amp on 6.1 fix as it gives a nice soundstage even on 5.1 material IMO.

The matrixed ES mix on ET aint bad at all, and it's just as good on the theatrical version. The bit where the lads on the bikes ride over the top of the police car, in the chase near the end, is a nice, subtle surround back moment.
