Question:
recently i watched: Ring & Ring 2, Audition and Bio Zombie on FilmFour ... i thought these were really good.
i was thinking about other japanese movies i've watched: Afterlife and Maborosi
i also watched: In the Mood for Love and Happy Together ... but i dont think they are japanese, just east-asian types
i heard about a movie called The Eye, which i want to see ( i might get it when it comes out)
what do you think of these, and what are some other good japanese/east-asian, pretty recent movies, which aren't based around fighting/kung-fu
(plus the japanese girls are really hot   )
Brother, Battle Royale,Hanabi and JapScat Vol2 :D.
JapScat lol, sounds ... interesting
Oh believe me it's very interesting
Sounds ****. :D
the eye is out in a good enough r3 release, tartan have it set for a uk release on 27th jan, which will hopefully be good but tartan are hit and miss to say the least. it will have a couple of docs on it though, which is more than the r3
Not to nitpick or anything, but Bio-Zombie is Chinese :D

The Eye is worth getting and my fav Japanese film is Battle Royale.
I usually use dddhouse for my orders.
I agree, Japanese women do look very attractrve (the ones which look over 16 anyway!)
what's battle royale about?
is there a site, i've heard of it - from it's name, but dont know anything about it

Kind of a cross between Lord of the Flies and The Running Man. Definitely worth the buy, Tartan has put out a pretty decent R2 disc for it (which is rare).
Oh, and don't forget about Kairo (aka Pulse, in the US).. see it before you see the (inevitably dire) Feardotcom.. which i think is suppose to be a remake of it.
i read a plot summery of Battle Royale:
Ninth grade students are taken to a small isolated island with a map, food and various arms. They have to fight each other three days long until the last one remains and are forced to wear a special collar which will explode when they break a rule.
sounds really good, i dont know why but i thought battle royale was like a historical japanese army type movie
i might pick this up - it'll be the frist non-engish language DVD i've bought
There is something very "otherworldly" about Japanese films which helps with the atmosphere, particularly in the horror genre.
I'd like to start pitching in with an older Japanese title if I may
The film Onibaba is creepy, unsettling and beautifully filmed - not sure if this has a DVD release anywhere yet - gets aired on Film Four occasionally. Also you could check out Criterion's Kwaidan - strangely theatrical and beautiful to look at - excellent use of sound effects in the first story.
One film I'd like to see , desperate with curiosity as I am, is Versus. Can anyone tell me - is it really worth the investment for the R2 Japanese version?
And those Japanese chicks... as you young people say... "rock"!
Andrew
I will try and check out the sci-fi action thriller The Returner which has just been released theatrically in Hong Kong ...
Other good Japanese films i really liked
St Johns wort - creepy haunted house type movie very influenced by Resident evil games.
Another heaven - similar to the 'Hidden'
Uzumaki - Very weird and stylish
Kakashi - Creepy one with scarecrows
Lots of others have had good reviews and i plan on getting -
Dark Water
Ichi the killer
Hypnosis
Gemini
Dark Water is absolutely superb - I preferred it to Ring
I can't comment on Versus but the director's follow up was Alive which I have seen... It's a completely overblown sci-fi cheesefest which started of promisingly (similar to Cube) but went downhill from then on - good for a laugh I suppose.
Those who saw Versus said it was pure none stop violence/action, an adrenaline rush if little else.
I quite enjoyed Princess Blade (Shurayukihime) It features some great sword fights choreographed by Donnie Yen and doesn't outstay its welcome
Forgot to mention The Happiness Of The Katakuris from Miike Takeshi (Audition) :D
It's hilarious, a real gem of a movie which I would show to friends and family to introduce them to Japanese cinema
"A musical !?" you say, "Go see it now", I say
