Question:
I'd like to know if anyone knows if the Special Edition of Frank Herbert's Dune on R1 DVD has the same exact content as the R2 UK/R4 Aus editions. The problem is that the runtime of the R1 DVDs is 289 minutes ( cover says 295 minutes ) and the UK PAL runtime is 292 minutes. if the PAL speedup factor is to be accounted for there's a 12 minute difference between the two DVD releases. The R1 should be 304 minutes long ( 4% speedup ).
Does anyone know what is correct? Are there still scenes that are only available in the R2 version?
And to top that most European versions are only 272-276 minutes long ( 2-DVD editions ).
Also, dvdtimes.co.uk said in their review that the sound of the UK ediion was only Dolby Surround. All sites online say it's supposed to be DD 5.1 ( as the R4 is ). Which is correct?
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

I have the R1 and the content of the series is the same as the R2 but spread on three rather than two (3 parts).
Also the sound is DTS 5.1 and DD 5.1 on the R1. I think the sound is DD 5.1 on the R2.
There are also a few more extras on the R1.
The R1 is also only £17.99 from Play compared to to £30.99 for the region 2 (RRP is £40).
I thought that the R1 were cut heavily for nudity and violence, wheras the R2 only had some headbuts removed.
and for this reason the R4 was actually the best.
shouldn't this be moved the the comparison forum....?

Mabye it should be moved. But then it wouldn't be seen.
And yes, the FIRST version was the one with the TV edits. The Special Edition had 30 minutes re-edited into the show. But the time is still not right. If the NTSC DVD is 289 minutes and the PAL DVD is 292 minutes there is a differnce of about 12 minutes between the tow. So is the R1 still cut? Does anyone know where I can find information on this?

I don't know about the running time but, both the new R1 and the R2 are the same in content except for 7 seconds taken out of the R2.

There's an interview with the writer/director on http://www.thedigitalbits.com/ where he says the following about the Special Edition R1:
The version for Europe, which was broadcast and released on DVD, is different than the U.S. version - you're right. It's a little longer and it does have some of the nudity. But it has some cuts that I made for the European broadcasters, particularly in the scenes with the Baron. There are some trims and some shortening - the scene with Jessica and Leto that I mentioned earlier. There's a scene with the Baron in his spa talking to his nephew after they've tried to assassinate Paul. Those scenes were cut or trimmed for Europe for one reason or another. They are in this version. So this particular version has never been seen anywhere before. It's my final cut, as I always intended it to be.
Thanks. That interview does help. I think i will get the US version after all. I'm waiting for a final info item from the man from the Digitalbits.
