Question:
Just been looking thru this forum for the easter eggs on LOTR R1 (which I've found now), and it got me wondering. How do people find out about hidden extras? Do the studios release the info? If so, why bother hiding them? Or do people just trawl thru the discs, looking for them? Some are quite easy to find accidently, eg LOTR, but others are not, eg T2UE, where you have to key in a date. Anyone know?
With some PC DVD players, it's easy enough to obtain software that will "unlock" them, letting you access any chapter you want. Players like PowerDVD have a "browse" ability that lets you look through the lists of chapters with a small clip of them playing.
Whiggels, yes but....
How do people find out what you have to do to access them - like typing in the date on T2 etc?

That one is quite easy to spot as you can see the letters right there..... hence you try pressing them and .... hey presto they light up
Another question...
Are they a good thing? Or put another way, why hide them? I've got a few DVDs with post-it notes in the cover with details of how to get the hidden features. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather just select them from a menu!!

James I'm not sure. I've discovered a couple by accident by mousing over things that I suddenly discover can be clicked.

I see them as just another fun interactive thing that disc makers can use on their titles rather than present everything in bland menus. It just makes for a more interesting package and generates a cool feeling when you discover them for yourself.
I think they are a great idea and I'd bet you that if maker's didn't do them, they would be criticised for not using the format to its full potential.

But then they wouldn't be easter eggs! The whole point is that they are fun secret extras. They wouldn't be special or cool or interesting if they were a standard part of the features. They make you look at menu screens carefully, they make you work a little to find the feature, they are a fun little game to play with the disc.
As to how people find the easter eggs... how do people find cheats in videogames? It's the same kind of thing. Sometimes a person finds the easter egg all by themselves, and the information finds its way across the internet. Sometimes the DVD's distributor will leak the information of how to access the easter egg.
Like I said, it could just be me, but I've never put a disc in with the intention of discovering easter eggs, and I doubt I ever will!! If I want hidden extras, I'll just read the forums, it's easier :D. Anyway, it's hardly a secret when once one persons discovered it, then the whole world knows!!
