Question:

an old chestnut but which is the best version?
thanks

I'm pretty sure the best version to go for is the R1 Millennium Edition from elite. You can pick it up from Play amingst other sites.

Not only is the Elite version the best version, it's the only version worth taking seriously - the transfer is sourced from the original negative and has one of the best black-and-white pictures I've ever seen, the extras are intelligent, witty and apposite (and feature George A Romero's enthusiastic participation - this is the only DVD edition he's deigned to grace with his presence) and all in all it's something of a triumph. True, it's vastly more expensive than its rivals, but you really do get what you pay for!
Most of the other releases are much of a muchness - mediocre prints, mediocre transfers, minimal to nonexistent extras - but the one to warn people about is the Anchor Bay 30th Anniversary Edition. It looks like a lavish deluxe package, but it's a total travesty of the film that's been disowned by almost everyone connected with it - even the so-called "original cut" features a different music score.
