Question:
not a huge fan of the movie, but dare i say that i liked it enough through suspension my disbelief enough to ignore all historical inaccuracies and american flag waving..
Is the 3 disc better than the R1? Are there quality extras? Or is it a load of HBO preview type rubbish.
cheers.
Just by looking at the box yesterday I'd say avoid it!
The r1 is 4 disc for starters and has great commentary tracks. Not to mention it's the vastly superior Director Cut of the movie. Which the r2 'Ultimate Edition' is apparently not! :brickwall
The r1 SE is one of the best DVDs I own.
director's cut? That sounds interesting. I take it the R1 isnt the theatrical release? What's so great about the director's cut? Have they made the movie historically accurate and less smultzy? Anything that gets it further away from "Titanic in the sky" must be a good thing.
The directors cut has more blood and guts during the attack on pearl harbour.

There's nothing in the Director's Cut that will make those that didn't like the Theatrical Cut change there opinion...
However if you enjoyed the Theatrical Cut then you will like the Director's Cut more. Basically the swearing and violence they cut to get a PG-13 is back. Plus other subtle changes (http://uk.imdb.com/AlternateVersions?0213149).
I got mine from Play for £17.99 (http://www.playserver3.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R1&title=102521)
I've got the R1 4 disc set and so I wasn't bothered when I heard about the Region 2, but I'm glad to hear it sucks! I saw a copy in my local DVD emporium (Virgin) and the packaging looks poor and I must admit I would've assumed it was the directors cut - it's appalling if it isn't tbh.
The R1 is an excellent set. Loads of good features and some excellent packaging! Like said above, one of the best I own. Its only £17.99 at Play.com, cheaper than the R2 version on the highstreet.
Out of interest (I've got the R1 set too!) have they put DTS on the new R2 3disc (film on 2 discs) or is it just the original theatrical release with DD5.1 on 1 disc and 2 discs of new extras?
DTS is not on the newly released R2 edition - yet the outer sleeve (Certificate 15*) is very similar to the Vista Series R1 issue.
Also this sleeve holds 2 Amaray covers..one with Disc 1 (Certificate 12) and one with Discs 2 & 3, the extras BUT CERTIFICATE 15*!).
So, does this mean that the film is the original version... and they haven't added in extra scenes - hence '12'...but they give us these extra scenes separately on the discs 2 & 3 - hence '15'?
Shouldn't someone have included these extra scenes in the main feature?
What a mess up - no wonder this film's made such a loss with decisions like this being made!
The R2 packaging sucks compared to the R1.
Also it appears that the excellent commentaries (all 4 of them) are missing as well.
Duff release.
Well... I just bought R2 3 discer for £12.50 from Sainsburys and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the packaging. Am I missing something here... It has a cardboard outer sleeve which houses a cardboard box containing the two amaray type cases. If you don't like the colour, you won't like the colour of LOTR 4 discer.
I have not seen this film but it was mainly bought for my wife. There has to be something wrong when people get all hot and bothered about packaging:D

I think there is just swearing in the doc's hence the higher certificate.

It's not that there's anything particully bad about the R2, it's just that the R1 is so much nicer (if a little fiddly).
The R1 is made to resemble the jounal the troops used. When you open it out there is a copy of actual letter from the war, a pouch which opens up to reveal the four discs and 3-4 postcard which are held in by a strap and buckle.

Thanks for that.... A bit like Band of Brothers and how everyone is buying it just for the tin.:|
I have the Japanese 2 disc version and it stops half way through the film
Asks you to insert the 2nd disc to carry on.
It's amazing quality and the 2 disc affair really does allow for the higher bit rate in terms of both video and audio.
