B5 region 1: Misspressed disk
Question:

hey... I'm having real bad luck with this DVD stuff.
First I get R2 with a incomplete booklet (soon fixed thanks to DVD.co.uk), then I realised I'd pre-ordered the R1 so that turns up..
Now, when I go to check the R1 "ATSFOS" episode for the w/s bug... I see that I've actually got a miss pressed disk 2 - it's actually disc 4 :oh-hum:
And yes - disc 4 really is disc 4.
WB have really dropped the ball on this one.
You others with R1 might want to check your discs too.

If you've got R2 already why do you care - just return or sell the R1.

Answers:

just annoyed that this is a really buggered up release that's all.

How does R1 compare to R2 - you are in unique position to tell us... esp with the episode "The sky is full of stars" and wrt the slight audio synch probs in Soul Hunter

Answers:

don't have and the sky full of stars - that's on disc 2!
remnd me again where the lip sync probs are on soul hunter and I'll check right now

Answers:

Disc 1, episode 2 'Soul Hunter'
8:38 mins
The phrase "They've always taken particular interest in certain classes of Minbari" stands out. Just a touch out but very noticable.

Answers:

just checked, and it's definitely still dubbed on the R1. Looks exactly the same as the version on the R2.
If I was to guess it's a redub on the source, rather than a bad coding error.
I've compared the video quality on the first bit of the first episode, and I can't see any difference - both pretty poor with flecks and marks on the print.

Answers:

Thanks for the feedback mate. Much appreciated.
So it sounds like the only difference between R1 and R2 is the "Sky is full of Stars" episode and its bizarreness....

Answers:

sounds like it.. although I can't check that at the moment
btw: Season 2 in April, and season 3 in November '03 If I remember right.

Oooh please tell me that's true - I love B5 and was dreading a 1+ year gap between seasons.
Where did you hear that?

Answers:

I'm currently looking for the proof, but I'm certain that I read it in a post from jms. I'll post it here if I find it.

here it is:
from the Lurkers Guide (www.midwinter.com/lurk)
More from JMS on August 13, 2002:
The disk has an on-camera introduction by me (despite my warnings that this would undoubtedly drive down sales), a letter of introduction each by me and Doug Netter, and the half-hour piece features new interviews with Rick Biggs, Stephen Furst, me, Doug, efx maven Mitch Suskin, makeup whiz John Vulich, and others.
They're tentatively targeting next April for season 2, and the following November for season 3.
as WB are apparently "stunned" by the sales of S1 so far, hopefully this will be kept to.
:rocker:  etc

Fantastic news.

Sorry, but can someone just clarify.
On the R2 discs are the audio sync problems in 'Soul hunter' and the switching in 'ATSWFOS' a mastering problem or down to specific discs and equipment. IE has any got one that is OK. I was just about to send these two discs back but if they are all like that there seems little point.

Answers:

My guess is that it's the same on all discs.
The audio sync problem looks like a redub on the source, rather than mastering. (I'll check my tapes next time I get chance)
The ATSFOS problem is a mastering problem (or rather, they took the fullscreen fx shots rather than the widescreen fxshots when encoding.
The only way to fix that is a recall/replacement. Here's hoping.
PS: adding on to the April release date, message from JMS today (6:31am GMT)
when asked if the release for season 2 would be moved up
I don't know if they'll be able to move up the date, which last I heard was about April, but I did hear the other day that they want to get the next set up and running asap. It's suddenly become a priority item.
Who'd've imagined?
