Question:
so i was watching return of the jedi last night and noticed episode 2 comes out on dvd in arouns a week.
i need strength. i know i'll end up buying this and hating it.
i dont want to start off a star wars rules/sucks thread, just alittle friendly encouragement to stop me wasting money on a film i'll buy, and then sit through complaining about!
ps bet it has a great t/f and sfx tho!
AOTC rocks. Watched it last night - it just gets better and better with each viewing. DVD is a brilliant release too - stunning picture and sound and great extras. What are you waiting for?
:)

I know how you feel...Unfortunately I also know I will buy this in WHSmiths when it comes out. I'm weak. I'm bad. I need to be punished. :(
Why don't you just rent it when it comes out?
Buy it, watch it, and then trade/sell it on on the classifieds.
If you get it with the Sainsbury's "2 for £25" offer it will only cost £12.50 and I'm sure you'll be able to sell it for £11-£12
Just saw it for the first time last night. Was very disappointed. I had bene told to expect a film that was 10 times better than TPM, but was probably only half the movie =(
How old are you?
People who were at the cinema to see the originals the first time round hate the new stuff.
Young kids love the new stuff.
People in the middle are mixed - I'm here and I love it.
Basically, it has everything to expect from a Star Wars film:
1) Cheesy dialogue
2) Poor acting
3) Storyline for 5 year olds
4) Lightsabers
5) Amazing special effects and sound
6) Yoda
If you don't buy it, not only are you a fool sir, but you fall into the category of 'People who are romantic about the old Star Wars, forgeting all of their faults because they saw them in their youth and therefore they must be better'.

1) Cheesey dialogue: most action movies have it. In the first Star Wars series it worked. In the later ones it didn't. Story of films the world over
2) For the most part the Original Trilogy didn't even have bad acting. Frankly if you want bad acting compare 'Cube' to Star Wars and you will see the difference between people who can act in 2D roles and people who can't.
3) Story for 5 year olds...well yeah. Like any James Bond movie. Doesn't mean all Bonds are the same calibre.
4) Lightsabres - but the battles just weren't as good this time around. Yoda taking the **** out of The Matrix with his 'come on' gestures? Please.
5) Yet again, a pointless item as Deep Impact and Armageddon had good effects also...and were not great movies.
6) 'A New Hope' didn't have Yoda.
A lot of people claim this 'romanticism' stuff. Well IMO that's utter nonsense. To claim that AOTC is as good a movie as The Empire Strikes Back, is to claim it's as good a movie as Raiders of the Lost Ark or Last Crusade. If you honestly believe that then there's nothing I can say, but we're talking small things that make a big difference here.
Yeah you can take it down and make the list you have there but you could do that with a slew of movies not all of which work. E.g. Speed vs. Die Hard - according to your sort of list they are comparable films, but for me Die Hard works and Speed is just lame.
This is why so many people don't like the new SW movies as much - the little niggles that just hold it up. You can claim it's down to personal opinion but IN GENERAL if a movie like this is good it gets a majority of approval from people. AOTC just hasn't gained the full 'grass roots' support from Star Wars fans, certainly not to the degree of many other similar movies these days, e.g. The Matrix.
keep it coming guys, i dont want to end up buying this pile of poo because i'm weak!
right after ROTJ finished last night i was on the phone to my friend trying to sell him TPM convinced i wouldnt buy AOTC.
he told me to stop being dumb cos i'd end up buying AOTC!
maybe i can buy it for 12-50 at sainsburys like someone said and then burn it along with TPM. big bomfire like in series 2 ep1 of spaced.
well it is the season for bomfires and fireworks. anyone know where lucasfilms UK HQ is?

Well I bought this pile of poo last week and it's a good DVD (whether you like the film or not). Over 3 hours worth of interesting making ofs (as opposed to the usual MTV soundbites and glorified trailers we're used to on blockbuster DVDs). OK, so the film isn't to everyones liking (although I admit that I love it, even as someone who remembers Star Wars first time around), but you can't fault the extras on the DVD. I'm a sucker for CGI though so it was never really in any doubt I'd enjoy the film (unlike the pile of rotting pants that is TPM).
I'd suggest renting it first. It's a real love it or hate it film!
Great film, Great DVD and Great demo material for home theatre - will NEVER be traded by me
Regarding Episode I - Lucas made the huge mistake of not giving Darth Maul more time in the movie. The guy was mean, highly skilled and generally could kick anyone's ass. I'm not saying giving Maul a bigger role in Episode I would have saved the movie, but it might have improved it a whole lot. More Maul, more Sith information and development, less of the CGI characters in general (especially Jar Jar), and Episode I might have been half decent.
Regarding Episode II - The story was a whole lot better, especially with more time for C3PO and R2D2. It was also refreshing to see Yoda kick some ass, although the battle scene with Count Dooku was pretty cheesy and might have been handled better. The biggest problem I had with Episode II was the acting. Hayden Christensen was a terrible choice for Anakin (as I'd feared since I first saw him). His acting is very wooden (as has been said many times), and when he goes into a strop you just think "This kid needs to get back in his pram and suck on a bottle". The words "little pathetic bitch" came to mind when Christensen tried to get angry. Thats not to say Portman was much better, her heart never really looked in it.
There were good things in this movie though, I agree with a poster above - the more you watch it, the better it seems to get, although not a hell of alot better unfortunately.
I thought that they could have done a lot more with maul as well - and made it seem more believable that ObiWan was able to defeat him - which didn't come across in the current film.

Exactly. Maul was just pure badass. Imagine Maul and Vader on the rampage ? The double ended lightsaber was a great idea too, it made the final battle scene really enjoyable. How they finished it with Obi Wan staring death in the face and then miraculously beating Maul was somewhat stupid and unbelievable.
Maul didnt need to be in it more. Yeah he was the nutz, but he really wasnt a major bad guy.
plus the time he does have on screen is fantastic, his entrance in the final battle WOH !!!, typical jedi/sith style with the hooded cloak, i love it !!
i think TPM gets better with every viewing. Sure it doesnt live up to original trilogy but give it some time.
And Jar Jar, yeah hes slightly annoying but he wasnt THAT bad. remember SW is aimed at kids.

Have you seen how it did at the box office? and no doubt how it will do on DVD.
If it was not well liked it would not sell as a product. How you can say it has not gained "grass root support" is beyond me.
It just seems to be trendy these days if your over 25 to trash lucas.

And with it's current re-release in America on IMAX screens it's likely it'll make the top 10 US box office hits of all time (Over $1.4 million in it's first week on just 60 screens - not bad)

Okay, whatever. I know only one person out of the 10-12 who went to see it thought AOTC was good. But we all went because you can't be sure of the critics. Phantom Menace did EVEN better than AOTC yet you're telling me it has 'grass roots support' of the Star Wars community? I don't think so. ;)

Well I'm a trekkie and I like Star Wars although I'm not fanatical about it like most.
Well having just seen it, I think this DVD has the best surround sound of any dvd yet, the music and fly pasts are just great

There's little doubt that Episode II will probably be the best video quality in DVD history. As Mr Proctor says, the audio is up there as well.
I can't decide if I should buy the Funky looking double pack that includes TPM as well. :norty:

There's this need to compare films in its own series, but Episode 2 is a hell of a alot better then quite alot of sci fi films. I liked the original trilogy alot, but not blind to spoil my enjoyment of Episode 2, its different, I accept it, enjoy it for what it is.
Hell, I'm glad the original trilogy was done so well, 3 films etc, not all series have consistency, I consider episode 1 and 2 as good entertainment, once the hype and expectations of the original trilogy being the same in the new films has gone.
LOTR will only be three movies like original star wars, but Wars will be 6 episodes, so consider it a bonus 3 episodes that fit the modern times sort of entertainment. If Episode 3 is better, then thats say 4 out of 6 done well, but I like Episode 2, so it would be 5 out of 6, and episode one as a bonus etc, not bad for 6 episodes in a series.
