Neil Young Rust Never Sleeps
Question:

Just wondering if anyone has got this. I am a big Neil Young fan and want to buy this but can't seem to find any reviews for it. Has it been properly remastered, Is the sound quality good. Is there a LPCM track as I usually find this is the best option for music titles as I don't have a DTS setup.
Thanks.

Above is a 'review' I found for this. It also has links to sites where you can buy it, which may contain some more technical info.
My Dad loves Neil Young, and has had this on VHS for years, so I might get him this for Crimbo!...It's only £14.99 at Play!!!

I got this last week.
The sound is pretty good DD5.1 & DTS , the DTS has the edge but i biased towards DTS anyway.Whether the sound has been completely remastered i don't know
The picture however is dissapointing. It's full frame 4.3 and looks , frankly , poor.
Much of this however could be due to how the film was originally shot.
I don't know if you have ever seen the film before but it is slightly bizarre anyway what with the road crew all dressed up in monks habits with large hoods on, taking forever to set up oversized pieces of stage equipment . It's just not a very good concert movie unlike say 'The Last Waltz' with its top notch picture and well thought out camera angles.
Overall though it is worth getting because the music is dynamite.
When Neil is joined by Crazy Horse and they just start rocking out it's fantastic.

They're supposed to be Jawas, you know those small hooded creatures from Star Wars.

When I was about 8 or 9, my sister took me to the cinema to see "Annie"
:o
When we got to the cinema, Annie was SOLD OUT, but there were still tickets available for the other screen which was showing a film called "Rust Never Sleeps". The woman in the ticket booth didn't know what it was about, but said she'd heard it was good so my sister bought us tickets and in we went.
20 minutes later we emerged from the cinema, two very bored and very confused children!
I like Neil Young now but at the age of 8 I think my young mind wasn't quite refined enough to appreciate the joys of "Rocking in the Free World".

Ok thanks for the correction.
As one of the very few people on the planet who has neither seen or has any desire to see 'Star Wars'
I did not know this.

I'm not surprised considering it wasn't in the film :p
I watched it on the big screen at the barbican probably about 10 - 15 years ago, during a rock concert special season or something ...

Wasn't it filmed in full frame originally? BTW I think that Young was supposed to have "directed" it himself (he uses a pseudonym)...
Anyway last time I saw it on TV (French cable) the quality was so poor that they apologised about it before showing it:eek: but I think that the original materials were hardly pristine - any inprovement on my VHS would be welcome although I must confess that I rapidly get sick of the 15 minute guitar solos  - I must be getting old... :D

That would be Mr Bernard Shakey! :smokin: :D
BTW perfecta, if you're tired of the guitar solo's in RNS :nono: then what about the solo's in Weld?!!!!! You could go and cook a meal during the feedback at the end of some of those songs! :rocker:

indeed - severe overindulgence anyone?
Still at least Young can do a half decent one unlike some of the dreadful metal bands who think fast and long means good - gimme a break...
Live those things do work quite well but when put on record they just don't work anymore - Gary Moore's and his painful 1 minute feedback on Parisian Walkways is so irritating it's untrue... then again Moore can be quite irratating when he pretends to be straight from the (belfast) delta...:D

I really hope his MTV Unplugged session gets released on DVD, some great stuff on that (Mr. Soul, Stringman & Look Out For My Love, to name but three) - and no 15 minute solo's/feedback! ;)
But Electric Guitar solo's/feedback or not, you've just gotta love old shakey - when he's on form he's got more energy and raw power and honesty than 9/10ths of the acts in the charts these days! (IMHO):smokin:

There's plenty of good music out there but the charts would be the last place I'd look. Only 9/10ths? I can't think of anyone in the charts who's CD I'd consider listening to let alone buy...
Steve Earle, Tom Waits, Nick Cave or Bruce Cockburn can probably compete with Yound but have they been in the charts recently? :(

Well yes, of course you're right. I only mentioned the charts to point out the feebleness of much of the 'mainstream' music that (young) people seem get off on these days (Jeez that makes me sound old :( :D )
And 9/10ths...well I was feeling generous. ;)

Point taken and as I say, I really don't judge music by what's in the charts. Got examples of all of those guys in my collection and I'm a big Steve Earl fan - he's performed some of the best live gigs I've been to! Must get round to buying his last two CD's!
I'm also a huge Ian McNabb fan and he hasn't hit the charts since the early 80's when he fronted The Icicle Works. This guy has more talent in his little finger than all of the pretenders on Pap Idol put together - and he has to release his latest CD himself via the net, cos he couldn't get a decent record deal!
My guitar gently weeps.

Glad to see you've got such excellent taste Crazy! :)
I'd recommend Jerusalem - some top tunes on there - but Transcendental Blues is nowhere as good IMHO... He's managed to put himself on the map though with the song about John Lindh the US taliban - there's been calls for having him (Earle!) tried as a traitor - there must be something in that Nashville water :D
