Question:
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is out in a couple of weeks with Die Another Day the following week.
I won't be bothered with Harry Potter myself, but I'm a long time James Bond fan so I'll be seeing that for sure. Harry Potter will have a head start, but which will make the most in the Box Office?
Harry Potter.
Potter for sure. But I don't want it to. But it will.
Not interested in HP in the slightest. UNfortunately GF is, so I'll be seeing it anyway.
Saw Philosopher's Stone at the w/e. It really is pretty dire
The kids playing Harry and Hermione can't act to save their lives - they look like they're in a school play. If it wasn't for the boy playing Ron it wouldn't be worth watching.
It's just soooo uninspiring - just imagine if Terry Gilliam got hold of it instead of Mr no risks, safe pair of hands Columbus.
HP could well reach double the box-office of DAD. Both will be hugely profitable - my predictions DAD - $300m, HP - $600m
DAD will be the first Brosnan Bond to be realeased with that new-fangled 12A cert, so that should open up the movie to a wider 'kiddie' audience. (If I remember correctly, it was major complaints from parents that Licence To Kill was the first non-PG Bond movie that helped prompt the BBFC to introduce the 12 in the first place???).
But I still think Harry Potter will wipe Bond's ass (now there's an image!) at the box office. Let's face it, Potter is a phenomena the likes of which we haven't seen in years, regardless of the quality of the product (I hated Philosopher's Stone). But I think DAD will be huge for a Bond, though it's really surprised me that MGM haven't pushed the 40th Anniversary / 20th Movie angle in their promotion. I predict a possible $400m.
Considering the overall lacklustre performance in writing and production of the Brosnan-era Bonds, I really couldn't care less how well it does.
As for Harry Potter, the second book was thin and a bit weak, but I reckon this will make for a far better movie as it shouldn't feel as rushed.
I couldn't agree with the comment about the child actors: they are playing the parts they were given and are pretty much exactly what you'd expect from the books.
the new potter film should be very good.
the introduction (which is what phiosophers stone was) is over, things get a tad darker (only a tad). azkaban will be a good film too but just wait for goblet of fire to get made.
thats when the serious stuff begins
I think Harry Potter will do better, not that I'm interested in either of them.
Bond movies have always done good but not spectacular business when compared to the real box office hits - you just have to look at the IMDB charts:
Spider-Man: $404 million US
Harry Potter & TPS: $318 million US
The World Is Not Enough: $127 million US
Spider-Man: $807 million worldwide
Harry Potter & TPS: $966 million worldwide
The World Is Not Enough: $352 million worldwide
I don't think it will be any different this time round.
Harry Potter..not a fan of James Bond in the slightest.
HP- easily
Well Potter has a whole weekend to itself to get all the diehard fans in who can't wait.
Bond is the week after, 12a will be good for it, but I don't see Bond being hurt, it could easily play off Potter, as getting everybody in the spirit to go to the films.
Die Another Day, 40th anniversary, London museum exibition on Bond, popuality is bigger then ever, its certainly going to be strong. Bond people have gone all out for it.
i'm off to see harry potter this friday with my kids
bond can wait till dvd for me to see it :oh-hum:
Harry Potter of course, whats the point of going to the cinema to see s Bond movie when its going to be shown every bank holiday for the next 20 years!!!!!!!
When I saw the header I thought this was a new film coming out :D
But HP should top DAD's takings.

Wot he said
Potter will walk all over Bond, simply because it is the most popular kids phenomenon in quite a while. Neither will be a particularly great movie, in fact both may well turn out to be complete turkeys, just in time for Xmas as well.
Harry Potter will do the better business but I have no interest in seeing it. Especially after the abysmal first movie.
Bond all the way for me :)

Alas HP will kick DADs ass, the hype in States is huge for it.
Oh joy another 12A saw XxX at the w'end and the start was ruined by schemy kids beating out "we will rock you" on the back of the seats the row in front of us, not to mention the reaction whenever an inch of female flesh was shown. :oh-hum: :brickwall :oh-hum:
oh and the parents joined in the seat beating.

Agreed. The first film was bloody awful.
Harry Potter, the first is the second highest grossing film of all time and there's still a huge interest from the kids (which is where the money is gonna be made in repeat viewings).
Personally I think (or is that hope) that the Potter phenomena will tail off... film 3 is now due out summer 2004, number 7 wont be out for a very loooong time, will anyone care who Harry Potter is then?
But I'm afraid I will be going to see it, was determined not to but after Richard Harris sadly passed away I have decided that I will. And my mate's seen it and says it is a lot better than the first, darker and scarier, so it might be OK.
