How often have you bought a DVD having never seen the film/TV series?
Question:

I ask because I have just ordered Band of Brothers, and although I have seen (and really liked) Saving Private Ryan, I have never seen Band of Brothers.
Twice it has been on TV and I have only found out part way through the series and hence I have stopped myself from watching it so that I can watch it in full.
I don't mean the occasional single DVD title which you got off the Forums knowing that you could happily sell/trade on after watching.
The only other big DVD set I can think of (off-hand) which I bought without having seen was Cosmos - the Carl Sagan's 7 disk epic
Just curious.....

Quite a few actually, I can't get to the cinema and don't have Sky Movies so the only way to see new films is buy them. Luckily I've only ended up with a few that I didn't like (Matrix, Se7en, TWINE) and they were easy enough to sell on.
I expect half of the films I've got were bought blind, but I'm a pretty good judge of whether I'll like it or not. I've only taken the chance of one TV series though and that was The Kindred because it was cheap from Future Ent and that turned out pretty good,

Maybe 50 or so movies I got without seeing them because of a particular actor or actress involved, but mostly it's the TV series, all of them. I buy a first volume and if I like the first episode or two, I start collecting them. I just saw an episode of X-Files and Stargate SG-1, but Farscape, Dark Angel, Sopranos, Total Recall 2070, just based on the concept and reputation, since I don't watch/have TV channels.

I'm in the US (for the time being) so I get a lot of comedy series blind... Spaced, The Office and Black Books to name a few. I'm looking forward to coming back home after Xmas... i've been away too long
If you liked Ryan you'll love BoB

I'm really enjoying all these series that have been released on DVD these past few months.
As there's been sod all on lately it's good to know i can put Buffy, Friends or Simpsons on and be entertained.
In the case of Buffy i've been able to watch a series i'd never seen before, which is great cos you ain't got to wait a week to find out what happens next. :D
I'm sure TV will continue to expand on DVD. I hope to at some point get, OZ, West Wing, Ally McBeal, Buffy S3, Friends S3, Simpsons S3 and Cowboy Be-Bop.
I'm also seriously considering not watching the new series of 24 and getting the boxset at the end of the year. (Assuming there is one).
TV on DVD = :rocker:

Tons and Tons.
I don't have time to go to the cinema at all these days ( this year only seen SW: AOTC and will see LORT:TTT) so almost everything is bought unseen!

Answers:

About 85% of the stuff I buy is unseen. None of my mates ever want to see what I want at the cinema so i normally don't get to see films there, it's only with the dvd release that i do get to see them

The vast majority of my purchases are blind these days, and I've only been let down a handful of times
A lot of times now, if a new series was to start that I was interested in I would be more likely not to watch it on TV and wait for it to be released on DVD

About 50% of stuff I've bought I reckon.
Classic films that i'd never bothered to watch, films which weren't released at my local cinema, and some Hong Kong stuff thats rarely on TV.
With regards to TV shows, I bought Buffy Season 2 because it was a bargain and that really got me hooked on the show.......I still don't watch it on TV though, instead I ended up buying all the seasons as they were released and watching it at my own leisure.
Another one was The Office DVD, never saw that on TV but that is very funny. Band of Brothers and 24 are both winging their way to me aswell and i've not seen any of those on TV either.

The majority of the HKL have been bought unseen, mainly ordered from recommendations from this and other sites. I don't get out to the cinema much these days [last film: xXx :brickwall ], so make use of my home cinema.

Most of the films I've bought I've not previously seen. Not generally the case for tv series though although there are a few I would buy e.g. west wing (still not seen any of them!), band of brothers (at the right price 'cos war films are not my fav movie genre).

Out of about 200 discs, I would say about half are things that I'd already seen on cinema, TV for VHS, and the other half were blind purchases. I've got pretty good at working out what I'll like from reviews, forums etc, so the ratio of hits to misses makes it work out far cheaper than renting when I vcan sell the ones I don't like afterwards. Lots of people (including my girlfriend) look at me in disbelief when I say I buy things that I haven't already seen, even though you only lose about £6 if you don't like it, yet they are perfectly happy to go to the cinema and pay £12 to see something they haven't seen.
Buying blind is also the only way to see lots of films, without having to wait ages, or fly to another country. I'd never have seen films like The Eye, Battle Royale, Donnie Darko or Frailty otherwise.
Also, if I buy and watch something I don't like, I never treat it as a complete failure (which some people seem to), as even though I didn't like it, it can still help when judging reviews to work out what I'll like.

Er, why can't you go by yourself? There's no way I'd miss out seeing something that interested me just because nobody else wanted to see it.

Many of my purchases are blind - usually tempted by the darned bargain forum
Of particular note are the Studio Ghibli discs and they certainly don't disappoint!
Another great buy was Dark Days

My sister coined a term for me "Bukaroo Banzai" meaning a blind dvd buy, as that was the 1st one i got....

Q: How often have you bought a DVD having never seen the film/TV series?
A: Countless times - because: where I live renting DVDs (and before that Videos and LDs) of movies is not an option, certainly not original language versions, while many TV shows* were unknown to me (basically, everything shown on TV in Switzerland is dubbed into German, French, or Italian, depending on which station you watch)...
*e.g. FarScape (who wants/needs Star Trek when they can get FarScape!?!) - Cold Feet - So What Now? - Jeeves & Wooster - Randall & Hopkirk (both original and new versions) - Ultraviolet - 1960s The Saint - etc.

I bought Tipping the Velvet without first seeing it on TV, although to be fair I had intended to watch it when it was on, but I missed the first episode, so decided to wait.

I've bought quite a few blind, more often than not I'll get up trading them on. I'd rather watch a film at the cinema first and if I like it then I get it. Although if the film is out on DVD before it comes on at the cinema and it's something I really want to see then I will get it.
