The two songs I was reminded of most, musically and stylistically, were 'The Frog Princess' and 'Through a Long and Sleepless Night'. Make of that what you will...
I saw a preview at the Odeon a couple of days ago, and I was stunned. It's superb! The songs, the costumes, the sets, it's all really well done and I'm very impressed. It got me laughing in the right places and twas a joy! Haven't seen a really good movie like this in ages.
It's better than a lot of the other Hollywood stuff at the moment, and it's well worth seeing on the big screen with BIG sound!
A simple love story, with a sumptious candy feast for the eyes!
Blimey, I saw the trailer and swore I'd never ever watch it.. ever!
Didn't do a damn thing for me :o
I saw it 4 times while in Australia and New Zealand. It was ace, although the soundtrack is missing some of the best songs!

Saw an advanced preview on Tuesday and thought that it was very good. The first 10 minutes took abit of getting used too. I thought at one stage "what am I doing watching this!" but it got much better. A very enjoyable film which is something we haven't been able to say much this summer :(

Youd be forgiven for thinking that based on the trailers... but it is actually a very good movie.. You should give it a go! I have yet to hear/read one bad review..
Just seen Moulin Rouge and can confirm it is stunning, very funny and cinematic.
A must-see film this month!
well probably in the minority but went to see it last night and hated it! Just didn't do anything for me and it was far too long.
Even the girlfriend didn't like it either, so there you go!
The singing voices of Ewan and Nicole were a suprise tho I must admit...
Just got back from a screening where a couple of people ended up walking out, and many were saying how crap it was on the way out. Personally, I thought it was great fun, perhaps a little too long, but certainly one of the few films I've seen at the flicks recently that I'd go out of my way to see again. Very good stuff, let's hope Baz makes his next film a little quicker!

saw a preview last night and thought it was generally excellent. It's funny and draws you right in after a surreal start. Also it's VERY funny listening out for the modern songs. At first i found it hard to work out if it was good or not as i haven't really seen anything like it, in the end i just decided to judge it on how much i enjoyed it, and i did, which was nice.
I'll definitely be seeing it, but I have a horrible feeling that going to see Jean Renoir's utterly wonderful French Can-Can shortly beforehand (it's getting a one-off screening on Sunday) won't do it any favours...
A coupla people walked out the screening I was at last night too - but I reckon the flick's fantastic.
Although I can see how Baz's style can rub people up the wrong way - it annoyed me though, how Scary Movie 2 is being shown on more screens (roughly a screen starts once an hour), whereas MR is only being shown 4 times a day at the cinema I went to.
Now this may just be me, or did Paris look a lot like Monkey Island?
Thought it was brilliant, best film of the summer (if not the year)so far.
Must be watched.
just got back from seeing moulin rouge tonight and thought it was absolutely fantastic! SO much better than i had hoped. visually, emotionally and technically accomplished - not to mention other qualities that i can't really seem to put into words! yes, it had its faults, but who cares? i've never seen anything like that before! woo-hoo! :)
Well, I decided to see it before the Renoir film tonight, and absolutely loved it - but then again, I'm the world's biggest Fellini and Ken Russell fan (and think that Lisztomania is a work of near-genius), so how could I not?
Any film that features Jim Broadbent singing 'Like a Virgin' surrounded by high-kicking flunkeys wielding ejaculating champagne bottles is clearly unmissable by definition - and I've thoroughly enjoyed some of the more po-faced reviews (it got a lot of lukewarm-to-negative write-ups, contrary to the impression given above).
My review courtesy of Odeon cinemas is now up. Check it out for an alternative opinion on the film. The link is in my sig.
It was absolutely Spectacular Spectacular. It's been quite a while since I saw a film this good and would pay to see again.
Though Shrek was really good aswell....
Well i enjoyed it....but not quite as much as every one else seemed too. I loved it for the first hour but then for me the flimsy script began to show through and some seriours editing should have been done to get the film to it's very obvious conclusion. But that's just me being picky, any film that can make Smells like Teen Spirit into a ( very good ) show tune can't be all bad.
Loved it! The audience of about 12 ( cinema is def' not 'the thing' where I live!! ) even sat transfixed throughout the credits.. none of us wanted it to end ;)
Went to see this last night, and i was amazed! The first 10 minutes were a little hard to get to grips with, but after than the film just gets better and better, so different to anything i've ever seen. Some people even clapped at the end of our screening which i thought was a bit corny, but IT WAS THAT GOOD!
My girlfriend was nearly in tears at the end...
Anyone who appreciates great films will love Moulin Rouge. ;)
Agreed, saw it with fellow forum mate Ben on Saturday night (but didn't have the energy to post when we got back!) and thought it was excellent. It was so good to go and see something that was so different in every way from the norm. Particularly as it seems so long since I've seen anything of real quality at the cinema.
I really want to go see this again. I think I might have another viewing at the weekend.

R1 and R2 will probably be both out for xmas, but at £14 delivered you can't grumble. :) Chances are it'll work on R2 players aswell.
Saw this last nite - SUPERB. A non-stop musical fest. Acting good all-round esp. from Jim Broadbent.
Has everyone who liked this, voted at IMDB yet? Because it sits in 113th place at the moment. Surely it's worthy of moving higher up....
MR MOBY
you pressuring people to vote for the film surely defeats the object of a poll. I've seen millions of films and only voted for some of them.
Moulin Rouge will slip out of the 250 in a few months. Hypermania about new films always ensures that this does happen. i can remember when American Beauty was number 2 of all time!! Although people have posted about their love affair of the film here, I can tell you that based on everything i've heard the jury is 50/50.
Saw this last night and was just blown away - a wonderful film, intelligent, witty, sad. The sumptuous visuals and sound track are phenomenal, ( a slight superlative overload I know, but it deserves it).
For fans of the contemporary, it really is like nothing you have seen before, (unless you are one of the few "Armenian Goat herders" that watch the same films as Mr. Brooke ;))
I have mixed feelings about this film. From scene to scene it is often brilliantly original and dynamic, but as a whole I thought it failed to cohere, delivering the ridiculously melodramatic plot with too many smug winks to the audience to capture the necessary conviction and sincerity that make the classic Hollywood musicals work.
Just seen Moulin Rouge! First 45 mins a bit bizarre and confusing. I didn't really bond with any of the characters, except for Ewan and Nicole, and that was a shame. Also, parts which were supposed to be funny - just weren't! Second half got much better and the two leads were doing a fine job. The singing was excellent and most of the songs were very good (although could have done with some original material other than all the cover versions). There were some truly beautiful and magical moments, you could really feel the passion from the two lovers. However, I felt that these moments were spoiled by the coarse scenes that were intertwined with the romance and this just didn't work, as it detracted from the emotion of the lead characters. Worth seeing as the songs were good and the romance was very good.
I didn't buy the love story in this film, the chemistry between McGregor and Kidman just wasn't there. It looked fantastic and the Like A Virgin number was fantastic, but it was very much style over substance.
It's exciting! The audience will clap and cheer.
It's delighting! It'll run for 50 years.
For the first half of Moulin Rouge, I sat aghast at the thought of so much time, money, talent and imagination utterly wasted on such a pile of mindless fluff. Embarassing attempts at cleverness (if you think it's the height of cleverness to dance the can-can to 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'), hammy over-acting and hyperactive attention seeking. ("Look at me, look at me! Aren't I clever!")
If I hadn't been with my girlfriend, who was absolutely loving every minute of it, I think I might have joined a few other couples who obviously didn't get what they expected and walked-out early. But when the film slowed the pace down a little and toned-down the showing-off - or maybe it was because my brain had atrophied when it realised it wasn't required for the film - I actually started to enjoy it, and it just about won me over in the end.
It's certainly one of a kind, but I still can't help feeling - God, if only all that talent, money and effort had been put into something worthwhile.

Hey Ralphphy boy, take it easy - I wasn't pressuring anyone at all, just merely was bringing the thought to the attention of those who wouldn't have.
And this worked two ways, as surely it reminded those that don't like the film to put in there vote as well.
But anyhoo.....
Mr. Moby mate, was being a little hard on you as you are from Westcliff. My girlfriend went to the girls school there. I live near Rayleigh.
My girlfriend had seen it before me and absolutely raved about it, and even my mother and her friend who usually hate everything they go to see thought it was pretty brilliant.
Personally the first 15-20 minutes had me thinking that the entire thing was going to be a shambles, but it did very much pick up, although some of it was a touch overlong (especially a couple of the musical numbers) - overall it was good, nice to see something so extravagant and so different, if nothing else, it was visually incredible.
The entire thing was marred by a load of 12 year olds talking through it, messing with their mobile phones and indeed by 10+ people walking out of the showing... I can imagine opinions being very divided on this one for a long time - some will love it and some will feel like running screaming. 7/10 from me. :)

This happened the first time I saw it..it went way over their heads. If Nicole Kidman sang a song they'd shriek 'she already sang that song!'. Er, recurring motif, girls. They kicked the seats, they messed with their mobiles, the chattered, they snickered. 3 seats from the screen. I turned around and said 'I came here to listen to the film, not to you, so please shut the ******* up!'. It shut some of them up, but I went to see it again with my girlfriend anyway.
I (obviously) thought it was a very good movie, an essential DVD purchase. But definitely a case of 'view first'.
Just got back from seeing it. I wont go into a massive rant and rave. I shall simply say.....EXCELLENT! :)
Argument at Box Office with the Wife. She wants to See Moulin Rouge I want to see Fast and Furious. She wins 1-1 on votes and I have to suffer Moulin Rouge - a bloody musical for god's sake!
Who would have guessed that it was absolutely brilliant. Marvellous film, could surely only be bettered if it had fast cars in it... ;)
Saw it on the weekend and really enjoyed it (though in the first 15 minutes I thought I'd made a mistake!) but...did I see Ozzy Osbourne's name in the cast list?
I wanted to see Moulin Rouge until i watched the video on MTV and i think that Ewan and Nicole are the worst singers i have ever heard.
Do they sing in the film aswell

They sing all the way through the film - it's a musical. The 'dance mix' version of the song on MTV is pretty bad - it is done differently in the film and works very well.
The worst singers you have ever heard? Have you not heard that bloke from Ash?
I thought the film was fantastic, and enjoyed my secong viewing even more than the first as it was easier to pick out details and nuances that were missed on first viewing due to there being so much going on the screen at any one time.
I do think it's a love it or hate it film and I loved it.
I do think it's a love it or hate it film and I loved it.
eerr i just thought it was O.K.
:)
( There's always one. )
I paid my money to be entertained and dammit i was!
An excellent movie IMO and one I shall be preordering post haste.
BTW Anyone else been wandering around singing ..
'Moulin Rouuuuuuge' AHA, take it now or leave it ' etc to the tune of ABBA's Voulez Vous?
No? Just me then ... :D
I saw this the other night, won't have gone if it wasn't for some mates going, but it is without a doubt excellent. After a poor summer it makes up for the awfulness that was the majority of the summer blockbusters, a definite dvd purchase!
I saw this yesterday and it was OK. It was visually stunning but the story was a little too familiar - Titanic anyone? Poor guy falls in love with girl, girl torn between rich get and handsome charming poor guy. Poor guy wins after much toing and froing then one of the lover dies (spoiler put in just in case anyone reading the thread hasn't seen the film.) I loved the song and dance routines and some of it was rather surreal. Ther best way I can think of describing it is Dennis Potter meets Titanic.
I enjoyed it, I think its probably better seen at the cinema, but I won't be rushing to buy the DVD.
Just got back from a showing at Didsbury UCG cinema in Manchester (this and Amile the first fruits of my £9.99 a month card) and I must say I loved it. The visuals are stunning if hyperkinetic and Kidman is a star! Of course the film is all style over substance (unless you read it as a commentary on the artifice of musicals) but enjoyable nevertheless.
I have to see it again if only because of the constant interruptions from young kids who were at a party and who wandered in and out of the cinema for the duration. A load of us complained afterwards and, to be fair, we all had the chance to have our money refunded.

I was originally going to wait until the dvd was out to see this but I had some time on my hands today so off I went...
I thought the movie was excellent,it's in my top three for the year alongside Ghost world and Amelie.
I bought the cd after seeing the movie and look forward to the dvd release.

They sing all the way through the film - it's a musical. The 'dance mix' version of the song on MTV is pretty bad - it is done differently in the film and works very well.
The worst singers you have ever heard? Have you not heard that bloke from Ash?
I thought the film was fantastic, and enjoyed my secong viewing even more than the first as it was easier to pick out details and nuances that were missed on first viewing due to there being so much going on the screen at any one time.
I do think it's a love it or hate it film and I loved it.
