Question:
How many of you buy your DVDs with an eye on how they're packaged?
If a film's released across different regions, does how they're packaged affect your decision?
(Check out this thread: &threadid=129807)
:smokin:
I do like a dvd to come in nice packaging, but not if its at the expense of a loss of content. If a film was released with almost identical content and quality but one region had - what I consider to be - better packaging, then I would plump for that region. e.g. the R2 version of Disney's Beauty and the Beast:CE has better packaging plus PAL picture quality.
PAL speed up is not an issue for me, as I can't say Iv'e ever noticed the difference in pitch. The main reason I prefer PAL over NTSC is 3:2 pulldown. This is very noticable on my R1 discs.
Generally I buy my DVD's based on price and content, if DVD's are equal on price and content, then packaging would kick in. I would never buy a more expensive edition of a DVD based on packaging and that includes English only covers.
Yeah, I only care about the material included on the disc itself, pictures on top of a disc, booklets are nice but if I want something like that I can buy 8x10s of an actress and frame them, or hang a poster, or get a photobook or screenplay, but if they are included in addition to a great SE, like Pulp Fiction, then I'm even happier, of course.
Though I think I would pay more for a better packaging if it was available in another region, if I really like the movie, but with a thousand discs, and a thousand more on a "wish list", there's gotta be a lot that I just want to have because I've seen it and am a completist, so for such titles I don't care how they're packaged or if they're special editions or not.
Both, in that order.:D  :notworthy
If it's packaged by EIV, it's safe to say I won't buy it.
always content
A combination of content & price (I will take the lower content iem if it's cheaper and I'm not that fussed about the extra content like in the case with BTTF). Packing never comes into it.
The only disk that I bought for content and cover, is my R1 Book of the Dead.:smokin:
Well- I tell a lie- Ill be buying that Simpsons Halloween DVD today because of the packaging on the toy edition.:o
SithLordSi is curiously silent on this topic...
Strange, as it was he that suggested starting this thread!
:smokin:
Not bothered about packaging, content all the way
Packaging is of no importance as far as i'm concerned
I've got to say...
I love you all! :norty:
It's EXTREMELY gratifying to read that so many of you only care what's ON the disc, regardless of what it's packaged in...
Kinda restores your faith in humanity somewhat...
:smokin:
I usually buy the NTSC version, with exceptions only for discs that are (a) unavailable in NTSC, or (b) overwhelmingly better quality in PAL.
If the packaging is nicer on the version I decide buy, then that's a bonus. It's low on my list of buying priorities.
Usually price and content.
ALthough I'm getting pretty tired of the Canadian covers I have to say.

Troll,
Having read the thread in question, I fail to see how you seem to think that SithLordSi has a preference for packaging over content.
He clearly states the reasons why he purchased the R1 Almost Famous and says that packaging IS NOT as important as PAL speed-up (the reason he steered clear of the R2 version)
Do you honestly think that anyone would argue that the content is not more important than the packaging?!
I own the R1 version of this movie for the very same reasons as SithLordSI. Some people say that they can't tell the difference in pitch between a Region1 and a Region 2 release. That's fair enough. Likewise some people would argue whether DTS is as superior as you suggest!!
I can't see why you can't except that everyone is entitled to their own opinions :oh-hum:

Of course everyone's entitled to their opinion, it's what we're here for! :)
SithWatsit clearly stated, as one of his three reasons for not getting the R2 'Almost Famous', that "...the packaging on the R1 is far nicer (bar the missing slipcase, of course)".
My argument is, clearly, that this SHOULDN'T BE A DECIDING FACTOR IN ANY WAY (hence this thread).
You don't seem to read too well...
:smokin:
(It's 'accept', by the way... ;) )
I agree that it should not be a deciding factor. Perhaps, then, I was wrong to include it on my list of reasons. To be honest, I didn't put a whole lot of thought into it, because I didn't realise I was replying to the world's biggest pedant. If it would make you happier, Troll, I'll revise that list right now.
MY REASON FOR BUYING ALMOST FAMOUS R1
- it was not released anywhere else at the time
MY REASON FOR NOT UPGRADING TO ALMOST FAMOUS R2
- I don't like PAL, and the inclusion of DTS couldn't change my mind
OTHER THINGS THAT I LIKE ABOUT THE VERSION I HAVE
- gate-fold casing, bonus CD
Happy now? Oh, I almost forgot the obligatory smilie that means "only joking mate, don't get riled, it's only a discussion after all!"
:)
Except that it doesn't. Does it Troll?
:smokin:
Troll
I disagree with your statement that packaging "shouldn't be a deciding factor in any way"
Surely, if two DVD's were identical in every way (sound, picture, extras etc.) then the way they were packaged would become an important factor!
I know that there are enough people on these forums who:
1. Hate snappers (and buy R4 releases because of this)
2. Hate Bi-lingual covers (and pay more for American releases than Canadian ones)
3. Don't like Digi-packs (and put the disks in their own packaging)
4. Don't like particular artwork (and will often produce their own based on the original movie poster)
I could go on........
But I think you will agree that packaging is often a deciding factor for many people.
Many Thanks for your earlier correction of my spelling
Well, Troll no one is here to decide what is the deciding factor for us to buy dvds. I, for one, take into considration everything (including packaging)when deciding which version of a dvd to buy.
Take for instance the limited edition of Spiderman on Region 1, it has exactly the same discs as the normal version plus the Stan Lee dvd which is also available to buy but many people are buying this version due to it's film cells, original comic etc and the overall packaging of the set. Ofcourse the film in terms of picture and sound matters, but that doesn't mean to say that we don't take any consideration with relation to packaging and cover art.
The fact of the matter is that the latest dvds are mostly identical in picture and sound quality and the only thing that differentiates them is the packaging and the extras.
and price!

Nice to see you've finally seen the error of your ways! :)
You get as riled as you like, bloke... ;)
:smokin:
I go for whichever is released first (as long as it's not barebones).
In the case of simultaneous releases I would go for R1 - because they are generally cheaper and also because they are less likely to have been cut.
Packaging is not really an issue unless it is really crap like the Canadian releases of Jackie Brown and Pulp Fiction.
I go for content but also take packaging into consideration.
e.g. I am currently getting Babylon 5 - "The Gathering/In the Beginning"
I was going to get the R1 as it has both films (unlike the R2 which you have to buy seperately costing more) and the R1 has a better quality of image than the R2.
The R1 however is in a snapper case so I am paying about £1.50 more and getting the R4 which is identical to the R1 except it comes in a proper DVD case. :dork: :)
Actually come to think of it, don't many people on these forums have an affinity to Tins? :D

Given two releases with identical specs, one in an Amaray & one in a snapper...
I'll take the CHEAPEST!!!
:smokin:
Bit of both.
I didnt buy the R2 american werewolf in london as the 'special edition' sleve was badly worn and the corners of the box was damaged (all of them). However its the box condition rather than artwork/etc. I only see the edge 99% of the time, but if it is damaged i tend to notice it ALL the time which annoys me!

Fair enough, but I hate snappers with a vengeance
I personally don't quite see the fuss with snappers.
I'd chose an amaray everytime if they're more or less the same price, but I certainly wouldnt avoid a dvd or wait 7 months for the R4 just to get an amaray case.
Likewise my R1 T2:UE is the flipper version, I know people who have gone ape over receiving the flipper and demanded a replacement or their money back.
Seems like unnecessary worry if you ask me.
The only time I avoided packaging was the Total recall Tin (which I hated) ... so I waited and waited and soon forgot about it but I finally picked a very nice Korean DTS version in amaray and slipcase.

I think that just about about sums you up then doesn't it. :smokin:
I'd pay more for an amaray because there's less chance of dust and air getting into it. Which I think you'll find is the main reason people prefer amarays to snappers.:smokin:
Snappers are also less hard-wearing.
My R1 Matrix (which has been played a fair amount) has started showing signs of the carboard of the snapper deteriorating.
Content, packaging, price. :)
i 'upgraded' my english R0 amaray Twin Peaks: FWWM to the R1 snapper for the extra features.
it was a tricky one for me: i hate snappers, but i did prefer the artwork on the R1 :oh-hum: i am happy with the decision though :)
as soon as i get a decent printer i'll print out some amaray artwork and be sorted

Simple...
Content comes first (the film mainly, extras come second), except when it's Warner, in which case I just buy from R4 anyway which solves the whole snapper issue for me :D
Still, content forced me to buy the R1 snapper of The Shining :(
In some cases (Warner again), I'll sacrifice an extra to avoid a snapper. e.g North By Northwest. I'll watch the film lots of times and I'd rather have PAL and a sturdy case than go for a snapper just for the sake of a single extra trailer (in R1) that I'll watch only once (I can download it or borrow the R1 from someone anyway if I really wanted to, but it's the film I'm more interested in, and keeping the disc & cover safe).
