Film mag reviews 'Die Another Day' and 'Harry Potter 2' -- is this feasible?
Question:

The main reason for my suspicion, which may be totally unfounded, is that a magazine has beaten the Internet -- a first, surely.
They are both labelled as "exclusive", reviewed by an anonymous source and have been awarded 3 stars apiece. Again, suspiciously ambiguous not to look too off-the-mark no matter what way the critical winds blow.
If the reviewer or reviewers have indeed seen the two blockbusters in question, then fair enough and I apologise. But despite moderate detail about certain actors' contributions to the movies, the reviews generally seem a little vague IMO.
Adding to my doubts is an outrageous story elsewhere in the same mag that Sean Connery has filmed a brief cameo as Bond Snr., although it is likely to end up on the cutting room floor as at a very late stage in the proceedings the producers realised 007's parents were killed when he was a child! This is, AFAIK, true but I can't believe that anyone in the crew wouldn't have known this all along.
Anyone know if this is likely to be genuine? I know there's been a lot of annoyance about DVD mags printing bogus reviews lately. The up-to-the-wire release dates of so many big films have been a thorn in the side of film magazines for a few years now and I'm sure they'd all love a scoop.
Besides, Die Another Day will get five star reviews, not three...

Answers:

I read this in HOTDOG as well, & I dont really belive that a critic from the mag has seen either of them.
Both the reviews did not mention anything else that has not been written about already & were either made up or the veiws was taken from someone involved in the makeing of the film.
I really like HOTDOG as a movie mag, & Im very disapionted that it has stoped to this so caleed "exclusive" crap:oh-hum:

Yeah, it's ********.
DAD will get at least 4 out of 5 stars from most people that have seen it.

your dad is James Bond???
Wow! can you get me his autograph? :D

The media got to see Harry Potter a few weeks ago but arn't allowed to publish the reviews till the films release. But i can't see them leting Hotdog magazine have the exclusive.
If the new Bond is anything like the last two it'll get 2 out of 5.

I think some of the mags get fed up of not being able to publish reviews in time for their release. The next issues are all going to be the back end of November now. But how Empire & Total Film get round it is by publishing an educated guess. Unrated, they use the review to pull together the known facts & what they have actually seen & hopefully give a picture of what it will be like, without commiting to a rating.

The Empire review of the new Harry Potter and James Bond film will be up a week or so before its release I would imagine. It's usually what they do when they can't review it in the magazine. So keep an eye out for them at http://www.empireonline.co.uk

It's quite possible that there have been early trade screenings (also possible that the magazine got someone into a sneak preview), but the main UK press show is next week.

In the latest issue of Hotdog they have a world exclusive review of The Two Towers and do we believe they have actually seen the film? I know I have my doubts. :)

Answers:

Well they definitely hadn't seen Die Another Day, as the press/multimedia screening was after Hotdog was out. People I spoke to at Empire hadn't seen it before then, so if they hadn't, I very much doubt Hotdog would have.
So take this LOTR review with an extremely large pinch of salt.
Hmmm - Hotdog is playing havoc with its reputation here, surely? The free mags in cinemas can get away with this, but a newsstand mag? Very poor indeed.
