I'm very tempted to get this , I've only seen the film the once and that on DVD a while ago , but I really enjoyed it

i watched this on vhs a few years back as it was recommended, but i thought it was the biggest bag of shi* ever!!
maybe it was the fact i watched it on VHS :)

Answers:

the current R1 is pretty good, transfer looks excellent, i don't really see the need in this.

"...i don't really see the need in this."
...ahh... but you don't understand: it's got dts...! ! !...
. . . ;) . . .

Answers:

hannay, have your read the book? As a rule I think films where you have to have read the book first are pretty redundant. It really does help your appreciation of the film. Especially if your read it several times and gone on a 48 hour bender in Las Vegas:)
As for the disc this has now gone straight to the top of my most wanted list:)

Answers:

It is a "love it or hate it" movie. The extras on the Criterion disk sound super (as always) and it is right at the top of my must-have list.

Answers:

I've seen it a few times on the big screen (last viewing about 4 months ago) so I'm not really fussed about rewatching the actual film but the extras sound superb and I'll buy it for those alone.
Would've been interesting if Criterion had managed to include some information about Alex Cox's failed adaptation - legally, it's probably a no-no.

Even if you're not interested in the (fabulous-sounding) extras, think how much better the new transfer could be - the "current R1" is hardly actually CURRENT, is it?
Sounds like someone doesn't want to put their hand in their pocket! ;)

YES!
Cannot wait for this one, Gilliam Commentary + dts is the icing on the cake.

is there gonna be a r2 version?

Permission to shout BRAVO! at an annoyingly loud volume!
How much do retailers normally have new CC releases at. Can we expect a RT price of £17.99, or will it be more like £25?

Answers:

not particularly looking forward to the Johnny Depp commentary - he's a good actor but very dull when not in a film

Answers:

Might be tempted to get this as I've only watched in once, and thought it was very good. Problem is, I was drunk at the time, so this might have had something to do with it!!
Having now been to Vegas of on a 5 day session over the New Year since seeing it, it might make it even better 2nd time round!!

Answers:

I'm not really sure in the point of this - the current R1 is excellent, and its not really the sort of film to benefit from the theoretical advances of DTS.
I'd probably buy it if I didn't have the R1, but I don't think its a compelling upgrade.

Then what's the point in ANY 'Special Edition'?!?
This re-release has all the kinds of 'extras' enthusiasts are interested in, an upgraded soundtrack AND, as I've pointed out previously, the "...current R1..." is HARDLY current, is it?
Given Criterion's record of great anamorphic re-masterings, imagine how much the transfer COULD benefit!

never read the book (or any book  ) and have been to Las Vegas, but still found the film crap!!

Answers:

This is a definite must-buy for me, despite owning the existing R1...
Fear & Loathing suits a special edition because there's so much behind the book/legend etc. I would've murdered for a HST commentary though... ;)

Answers:

Sounds fantastic!
Yes, the current R1 isn't bad - but this is a truly magnificent film (one of Gilliam's best) and deserves the red carpet treatment. I'm especially intrigued by the Depp / Del Toro commentary. Just a pity the producer couldn't be in the one with Gilliam and allow Depp and Del Toro free reign. One of the best cinematic partnerships since DeNiro and Grodin.
Is there a release date so I can strategically plan my offload of the current disc? :)

Answers:

"As your attorney I advise you to buy this dvd!"

Answers:

Doesn't deserve this treatment.
There are many better films out there that are worthy..even of a DTS soundtrack being supplied . This one is NOT one of them.
What a waste of technical effort on such a crap movie.
Rubbish
A big :nono: .

What a waste of a post on such a feeble argument.
Care to explain why you feel that the movie is so "crap" that fans aren't entitled to a special edition, rather than just blowing hot air?

Yes and not a criterion.
SO have criterions got better? admittedly I have a few early ones, and despite their rep, they were actually the worst quality DVDs I own. almost.
Have Criterion gone anamorphic yet?

pmdf,
You make a fair point.
All films should have the best presentation possible.
However I didn't like this film at all but I am pleased for you if this is one of favourites.
Politely, I don't think it merits space in the Criterion collection.

The fact that fans should be able to enjoy it in "the best presentation possible" was my point and I appreciate your "polite" response... ;) :)
It is one of my favourites actually... :) Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away, I used to run a reasonably popular Bret Easton Ellis site called Disappear Here. One of the denizens of the discussion forum put a vote forward on the most "un-filmable" book (Naked Lunch having already been attempted!). American Psycho was predictably high on the list (as we all know now, this has since been done, to a debateable level of success) along with Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian and HST's Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas.
The idea that Fear & Loathing could even be attempted was laughable at the time, but just a year or so later Gilliam made a masterful (IMO) effort. I'm not sure how the film would come across if I hadn't read the book first, but it certainly captures the essence of what I loved about the novel...
Now just waiting on someone to attempt Blood Meridian, unless I've missed it already...

And in contrast to that, when are criterion going to do justice to Bachelor Party, the Tom Hanks version?

in all seriousness, I would welcome that
even Hanks himself reckons that he did some of his best work in that film

Impolitely, I think 90% of the Criterion collection sucks :p
The only good ones they released were Shortcuts, Blade Runner LDs and The Rock/Armageddon, Chasing Amy, Brazil, and a couple of others.
I'm glad to hear about Fear and Loathing CC though, it needed an SE and no one does them better.

I'd buy it in a flash. I love that film.

i first saw it without having read the book (although i did have a reasonable appreciation for HST and the background of the book) and thought it was excellent. in fact, i still haven't read it...

the current R1 is very good...even if the limits of dts and mpeg 2 encoding were reached with the best possible transfer, the improvements would be negligible. there are so many films that have received genuinely shoddy treatment that criterion should be focusing on...

Answers:

Love the book/hate the film, but then can't say I've enjoyed any of the (admittedly few) Terry Gilliam films I've seen.

It may be "...very good..." but it's hardly great...
Haven't you SEEN any reissues of discs that were issued 3-5 years ago? Did you stop buying discs in '99?!?
The difference can be HUGE...
Anyway, I thought you said "...i just can't be bothered really."
Which is it?

Answers:

I first watched Fear and Loathing purely because of Terry Gilliam's involvement. I found the film very funny and refreshing. But I can fully understand people disliking it because it's so strange. Before I saw the film I had no idea who HST was.

Great news. Now I just have to wait for the more sensibly priced R2, probably better (like Time Bandits, Armageddon, The Rock, etc), non-Criterion over-hyped version :D.

This has to be the most essential 'extra' on the disc - even if you can get it already on the current R1!
I recently took the notion to turn the subs on just to clear up a particular line. That convinced me that the whole thing might be worth watching on subs - and it was well worth it!
If anything, Depp is even harder to understand than Del Toro for most of it. But the whole thing is filmed in such a way that you never question anything you can't make out.
Just what is it that Depp says to the Circus turnstyle clerk that gets him in for nothing? All of these delights and more...
Anyway, the big question is... will Criterion correct all of those horrendous lip synch issues from the R1?
;)

The current region 1 might look good, but the sound is only 2.1, which is a real let down for a film with such a busy soundtrack. I can't wait for the dts mix.

I know alot of people aren't to fond of Terry Gilliam's style he brings to his films, but I for one think the man is somewhat of a genious. I can still remember seeing Baron Munchausen as a kid and it scaring the living crap out of me, I mean that movie is strange, especially to a 8 year old. I already own the first release of Fear & Loathing, but I'll definatley be getting this one too.
