Question:
So who has this and which is the best version to buy? I am torn between the Warner Kubrick Remastered collection version and the Columbia SE version. The columbia version seems good but what are the transfers like and the sound quality (yes I know its mono) etc?
the warner version is the old columbia version that was released a few years back, minus extas, but with a different cover.
go with the new columbia version with extras, the transfer i probably the same, but definitely won't be worse.
plus it's a pretty good movie!
My R1 Warners Remastered edition of Strangelove has
The Art of Stanley Kubrick from short films to Strangelove - documentary
Inside the Making of DR. Strangelove - documentary
Plit Screen interview with Peter Sellers & George C. Scott
and the usual fillers... phot gallery etc...
The R2 Warners remastered edition has the extras removed so that Columbia can sell their SE version :)
and R4 doesn't even include the film in the boxset as I recall...
So R2 go for the Columbia version... R1 I think the Warners disc is as good
R2 Columbia SE.
1. Has everything the R1 Columbia SE has
2. Comes in an Amaray case (unlike the Warner editions)
3. PAL
4. Isn't released by Warner :p
But up to you between the R1 and R2 SEs. Both the same in content, so it's just down to NTSC vs PAL preferences. Is the R1 Columbia SE not a Warner rebranded one? If it is, then the awful snapper is an issue in R1 too, but otherwise it should be an Amaray.

The R1 Columbia is an Amaray. Also NTSC is my preference being in the US as it saves me running the movie through a standards converter DVD player to turn it back into NTSC!
I think I will check out the R1 Columbia. Thanks for the info.
Maybe I misunderstand you Fawlty, but if by 'R2 Warners remastered edition' you mean the Strangelove disc that came in the remastered R2 Kubrick box set then it has all the above extras. AFAIK the only Warner release of Strangelove in the UK, remastered or not, was in this boxset. It's just the R2 Columbia SE in a different case.

I'd say that makes the R2 Columbia SE better than the Warner SE. Same as the R1 Columbia SE though.
For those who didn't read it correctly the first time, the Strangelove disc inside my R2 Kubrick box set is the Columbia SE! It's also clearly marked as a Columbia disc, and has all the Columbia SE extras listed above, right down to the subs and extra languages. I'm not just regurgitating what I've heard elsewhere, I'm going through the disc's contents right now!
The snapper for the 'Warner' Strangelove lists the extras exactly as Rewind have them for the 'Warner' disc, but I can assure everyone that the disc inside my box is the Columbia SE. So either Rewind have it wrong, or I've got the wrong (but better) disc in my Kubrick box.
...can't trust anybody anymore, can one!?!...
. . . ;) . . .
It wouldn't be the first time Rewind would have something wrong (after all it's done through contributions so they're just going on what others are saying anyway). Was the Kubrick set re-issued at any point? Could be that it first had the original Columbia Disc rebranded, and then they re-issued it with the new Columbia Disc?
I assume the Columbia SE disc in the Warner set is still a snapper and has the same style cover as the other Warner discs?

Yes indeedy. The Strangelove snapper's cover is in the same style as the others, with the blue 'Stanley Kubrick Collection' banner on the front. The snapper also has no WB branding anywhere on it, just Columbia logos. Maybe Warner were all set to press their own disc, but then managed to get limited rights to distribute the Columbia SE instead? Good job too.
And as for incorrectly marked Kubrick snappers, the Clockwork Orange case is also wrong. It lists English, French and Italian 5.1 audio, and loads of subtitle languages, when all the disc has is English Mono and English 5.1, alongside English subs. Not that it bothers me, of course, but I thought I'd mention it all the same.
