...I see there's a lot of 'cheating' going on... ok, so I'll bite:
° Josef von Sternberg's 1930 made-in-Germany Der blaue Engel - a movie that starred Emil Jannings and made a huge star out of Marlene Dietrich ... was remade in 1959 - in colour and CinemaScope - as The Blue Angel, directed by Edward Dmytryk and starring Curt Jurgens and May Britt - who did not become a 'Star' after this movie sank like a stone...
° Fritz Lang's 1931 German M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder, the movie that made a 'Star' out of Peter Lorre ("The Man You Love To Hate"), was remade as Joseph Losey's 1951 M, the movie that made nobody a 'Star'...
° Gustav Molander's 1936 Swedish 'weepie' Intermezzo, featuring a very young Ingrid Bergman was remade in 1939, still titled Intermezzo, directed by Gregory Ratoff starring Leslie Howard and making a huge Star of Ms. Bergman... the screenplay was used again as the basis for Jerry Schatzberg's 1980 Honeysuckle Rose, starring Willie Nelson and Amy Irving...
...and so on... and on... and on... (...think "Solaris", think "The Bird Cage", think "A Woman's Face", "Gaslight", or "Algiers", think ".........your choice of a title..........", etc. etc....)
(...can't wait for a Hollywood remake of "Stalker" - imaginatively re-titled "The Stalker" and starring George Clooney...)

...it doesn't always have to be a Hollywood remake, either - I had dim memories of a couple of once-popular films, and went to the IMDb for confirmation:
° Austrian director Karl Hartl's 1948 film Der Engel mit der Posaune was remade in Britain in 1950, directed by Anthony Bushell and titled The Angel With The Trumpet ... not-yet-but-soon-to-be-famous actors Maria Schell and Oskar Werner appeared in both versions...

A couple of people have said Hidden Fortress = Episode 4
I thought I'd just be geeky and point out that it isn't even close to being a remake :dork:
Lucas copied the idea of telling a story from the perspective of the lowest characters (serfs in Kurosawa's movie, R2D2 and C3PO in SW), but that really is it, except there's a princess in both. Stories are not similar.
Sort of remake from Kurosawa (this is a stretch): Ran is his Japanese retelling of King Lear, which has been filmed hasn't it?

Interestingly, Manhunter was titled "Blutmond" (Blood Moon) in Germany and Austria when it first came out (as was the book, IIRC), now it has been retitled "Roter Drache". Can't imagine why... :)
So, to make this more interesting: Who can think of any other originals which were retitled to accomodate the release of the remake?

Answers:

Oooh, thought of another!
Point Blank = Payback
They changed the twist that made the original more memorable, but other than that Gibbo's version is far better than the arty John Boorman effort.
Know what you mean Bick, but a few suggestions have started featuring inspirations as well as straightforward remakes. God help us once we get into Shakespeare...
Batesman, trying to think of an example but failing miserably. I know it's not what you mean, but my feeble mind keeps wandering over to Rambo. First Blood, then Rambo? Or was it First Blood Part 1, First Blood Part 2: Rambo? So is Rambo 3 really Rambo 2 or First Blood Part 3? hmmmm.

Ooh - just thought of a good one!
The Big Clock, starring Ray Milland was remade as No Way Out with Kevin Costner.
I thought the Costner movie was quite good, but if you get a chance to see the Big Clock you should check it out too.
Instead of there being a hunt for a military man that has to be organised by the "villian" himself, as in No Way Out, its set in a newspaper office, with the suspect of a crime being pursued by a group that has to be led by the suspect himself... so same idea.

The Godfather II is a sequel (it's called '2') but also chronicles the events prior to The Godfather.
Does this count?
